ChrisM - 2011-02-25 12:37 PM Still planning on the Desert Tri since I paid for the race and hotel but as of now, will just be swimming and biking, not running, unless something changes drastically between now and then.

I'll try to finish up while you're getting off the bike so I can grab your bib and chip then head out to get you a run time.  Cool

Is bike racking predetermined by bib number or is it just divided by age group?

I think they had the beach run in last year's guide, but we ran on the road.  We had the sand run 2 years ago.  I think we'll be able to tell on the 19th whether or not there will be enough of a beach for us to run along and we can report back to the group.  Last year, it was pretty obvious a couple of weeks before the race that we wouldn't be able to run on the sand.  I guess we'll see.

I think last year's guide also said no age groupers leaving shoes clipped on bike, but there was a note on the wall at the pre-race video screening that said we COULD clip shoes to bike.  I didn't.  I usually do, but figured with the congestion of multiple people coming out of the water at the same time it could be carnage at the bike mount.  There's a hill in the first 1/2 mile taking you up and out of the harbor area and you'll want to be fully clipped in with shoes strapped before then.

Racking is by bib number - which is also by age group.  Last year I signed up to rack on the TCSD rack, but it was really crowded.  We got low bib numbers and a rack close to the bike and run out, but I may just opt to rack with my AG this year and take the higher number.

Re: Gearing: I used 11-23 / 53-39 last year and was fine, but then I changed out to 11-28 for IMCDA and haven't switched back.  I really haven't noticed any holes in gearing ratio and it's nice to have the bailout gear(s).  Not sure if it's worth switching anything out solely for this race, but like Chris said, it's better to have the bailout option and you'll still have a big gear for when you wanna go fast.

When you say run on sand do you mean just enough for a soft run or do you mean actually running on the beach Bay Watch style where you sink into the sand making it a much tougher run?

The sand area gets pretty loosened up by all the runners going through numerous times.  It isn't nicely compacted and easy to run on from what I recall.

This, and it's unfortunate because I look much better in a bikini than the red one piece.

sorry, year I did it was no sand, can't offer anything more than sarcasm.

Got my 60+ mile hilly ride in today, 2 loops of PV and cutting over Via Coronel, four 1000 foot climbs 2 of which were to 1300.  I haven't wanted to get off the bike so much in a looooong time

Sand running is on soft sand for about 1/4 mile 4X.  For the most part it is not packed down but there is a noticable single track you can follow.  I always feel like gumby running through it.

In other words hope for erosion and high tide.  The pavement is so much better.

Oh boy.  I guess I'll have to run a couple laps in my daughters sand box to simulate race day conditions.

Thanks for the info.

Can we bring a shovel to packet pick up and scrap away the sand the day before the race?

Good news that bike racking is by bib number though.  That takes some of the stress off of trying to get there extra early to get a good spot.

This weekend worked out better than I thought.  The weather was a lot nicer to us than what we were told during the week and I'm really glad I didn't have to put in a 3:30 ride on the rollers.  I was able to get it done outside with only the last part of it being wet when I got back into the valley.  It was strange to ride along the beach and see surfers in the morning and then be dodging snowballs in Burbank during an afternoon run.  I never thought I'd see snow along my running route.  On Saturday's ride I learned not wear myself out while riding with a tailwind.  It's easy to give too much and not realize you're burning yourself out.  Also, as a reminder to myself, don't forget to practice grabbing waterbottles from the cages and drinking while moving instead of just drinking at redlights.

Sunday was a great day to get outside for workouts.  I threw down an incredible run that was partially for Oceanside training, but mainly for Boston Marathon training.  I also did another 2k swim and cut down my pace even further.  I feel that I'm on track to be out of the water in 30 or less.

Glad I'm entering a recovery week!

Destroyer - to clarify, racking is by bib number only in that you will be assigned a rack.  There isn't a specific spot for your number on the rack, so the earlier you get there, the better (closer to the main aisle) your spot will be.

I checked out the run course map and they're showing the right hand turn on breakwater, so I don't think they're planning to have us run along the sand.

Also saw that Kona spots are now $650.00.  Not that I expect to get in at Oceanside, but I'm sure the same will hold true for any qualifier.  They could probably charge $1,000.00 and not affect roll-down all that much.

My money is on they forgot to change last year's athlete guide re the run course.

As for Kona, forget it now.

Okay everyone, it's March 1 and we're coming down the final stretch on training.  Time to sound off.  How has training been going?  What obstacles have you faced?  Is training going amazingly well, or are you battling some injuries, or maybe just busy with work or family?

For me, swimming is behind the curve, only 1 hour in Feb and 2 hours in Jan.  It's now or never, need to get in ~1.5 hours a week now or it will not be pretty.  Biking is okay, hoping to make a final push and get it there by April after slacking a bit over the last week.  Running, my historic weakness, is going pretty well.  I've had several weeks over 30 miles this year and am getting back to some good (for me) training times after a setback with the achilles about six weeks ago.  Weekly long runs are still only 8-9 miles, but my goal now is just to get to the starting line healthy with a modest run base.

So take a minute and let the group know how it's been going for you.

I feel I've been pretty vocal about where my training stands.  I'm feeling good about it.

Leave it to the guy in colorado to put in more Ski hours than Bike hours.  Smile

I think we need to throw down a challenge to get through our peak weeks.  I'm calling everyone out on this now, NO SKIPPED WORKOUTS FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH. Unless we're injured or seriously preventing damage to our health we need to make sure we're getting the gym, on the stationary bike, or out in the cold and putting in the work during these last weeks.  We're going to be bobbing in the harbor before we know it!

Nice job everyone.

Feb started off great, but I think the intensity was too high in a few key bike and run workouts.  Did a half marathon in mid Feb and have felt a bit toasted since.

Feb totals:

Swim 10hrs 10min, 27,900 yds.
Bike 29hrs 39min, 480 miles
Run 18hrs, 119 miles

This week, just trying to do higher volume, lower intensity stuff.

Nutrition has been a bit of a challenge lately also.  Just plain eating too much.

Same here on the run base.  Averaging 8-9 mile long runs right now - planning on moving that up to 11-12 a couple of weeks before race day.  This is only a B Race for me this year so I will not be fully tapered but will back off a little heading into it.

Feb numbers (with 11 days off for spider bite)

Swim - 12 hours
BIke - 12 Hours
Run - 12 Hours
Other - 6 Hours

I am just now getting back to the fitness level I had going into February.  Ride times and power are feeling good (2.5 Hour ride tonight will put that to the test) and run economy (pace vs. heart rate) is starting to come in line.

There's no lying on race day!

I'm in for the no missed workouts challenge!

Looking back on Feb, it seems like a pretty lame month for me - only 47 run miles?!?!  I've been pretty consistent with spin and the track (and piddling around in the pool), but for some reason I haven't been able to motivate for the long stuff.  Have been focusing on helping my gf get ready for her first tri in the desert this weekend and my workouts have taken a back seat a bit.

Starting to feel like I'm getting back after it now tho.  Masters this morning, track tonight.

Thanks for the push, Destroyer!

My daily whines rants updates aren't enough???

Swim - Going swimmingly.  I upped the swim yards last week due to the calf injury and I can immediately tell the difference.  Last night's masters was strong.  Too bad it's only a mile

Bike - The first time I did Calif. 70.3, I was a couple years into the tri thing, and was going 80+ miles every weekend or so which, looking back, is completely unnecessary for HIM.  This time, I am doing 2X week on the CT focused interval efforts, and a long ride of 40-60 on the weekends.  Bike will be fine.  I've never broken 3 hours in a HIM bike (they'va ll been hilly, WF, pumpkinman, and Calif.), something I'd like to do someday

Run - Well... I ran 3 yesterday.  That counts for something.  Although the calf was sore afterward.  I assume my long run going in will be in the 6-7 mile range.  Which means it's going to hurt.  Most likely.  Oh well.

Tomorrow is 2 weeks since the injury, and I've read recovery time is 4 weeks at least.  Right now its a day to day thing, I am going to try to keep some kind of minimal run fitness (running 3 more tomorrow), and then once it's healed try to get a couple weeks of a bit longer.  Doing the Desert Tri this weekend, but on chiro/ART's orders, just doing swim/bike.

Feb's numbers

Bike:23h 19m 46s  - 381.19 Mi
Run:9h 37m 01s  - 59.09 Mi
Swim:11h 07m  - 35400 Yd

Well considering this is my C race - or "just finish a little bit faster" race. I'm doing OK. Run is fine - i'm painfully slow, but i'm getting the miles in - 12er this week and a very hilly 15k race next weekend. Bike i'm behind - the weather has not been cooperative - now i'm just hoping for one or two >56 milers outside before April - could be a challenge. Swim - well, 6100 yards so far. I'm just getting started here - if i can get in 30k over the next few weeks I'll be just fine - no personal PRs, but no suffering either - swimming is non-issue for me. The biggest "if" this month is a week long ski trip to CO scheduled in the middle of the month. I'm thinking of it as altitude cross training! Not the best timing, but you gotta take awesome opps when they present themselves! If I can fit in all my w/o's in for the rest of the days I'll be ready to race - not my fastest, but as smartly as I can! The real pay back will come later in the year.

Have fun out there!
