kickitinok - 2010-12-27 11:21 PM Hello TriAya and Imscozz,

I was out of the country so I didn't get a chance to sign-up with a mentor group! Will you guys take me?

This will be my second year of triathlon, and of course there is still so much to learn....

As a result of secret international deliberations involving pop tarts and such, Trina is now a Manatee.

Feel free to introduce yourself with verbosity.

I'll add you to the team table and re-post it; there's also another Manatee who's trying to figure out the settings and setup of his log so we can actually see it so we'll wait for him too.

Thanks TriAya - really appreciate your flexibility and willingness to take another person into your group!

Having spent over 11 hours in airports yesterday, I'm a little short on verbosity this morning, so I'll give the basic facts. My quick wit and extensive vocabulary will eventually show itself one I'm properly rested

Name: Trina
Age: 45 (Although I feel like I'm 25 - seriously - I'm pretty immature for my age and I like it that way)
Married for 24 years and have one son, Brad who is in his mid 20s. Born and lived my entire life here in Oklahoma. Have a Master's degree and own two businesses.

I started training for  triathlon after I received a hybrid bike for Christmas two years ago. Really enjoyed riding and became addicted. Then winter came and I decided to move my workouts indoors in the form of swimming. Fell in love with it, too. Realized I was doing 2 out of the 3 sports in triathlon, so naturally I thought it'd be fun to try triathlon. Can't say that I've fallen in love with running (mostly due to injuries) but it's tolerable. Plus, it burns a LOT of calories. I started my triathlon training significantly overweight - actually in the obese category - but now I'm happy....no, ecstatic - to report that I'm now overweight! I've lost over 35lbs since July. I plan on losing another 40 lbs this year and will be at my goal weight for triathlon.

2010 races: A mini sprint, two sprints, a 5K, and a couple of charity bike rides.

2011: Capital of Texas Olympic Distance, Route 66 Sprint, and possibly Redman HIM?

Long and short term goals are listed on my profile.

Thanks again! This is going to be a great year!

Welcome Trina! A bit late but I knew Yanti would take care of our newest little manatee. And, I do mean little -- congrats on your weight loss. Love your goals and wish I were with you snorkeling in the Caribbean. Sigh.

I've had friends do the Redman HIM and enjoyed it...other than the year it rained like crazy.

Sorry, I've been totally absent with having tons of family in the house.  Who knew that a 4 year old and a 5 month old (my grandsons from New Mexico) could take up so much time?  I don't know how moms with young children do it.  I remember my mom saying the same thing, dang I feel old.  Back to work today for some peace and quiet.

I've had the opposite - grandparents in town watching my 6 y/o and almost 2 y/o ~ making for a super relaxing week, even with a house packed full of people.  Thanks to all you grandparents!

Biking-get a trainer NOT rollers.  Even on my bike team, only the most intense, advanced riders use rollers.  The risk of injury outweighs the benefits.  Get comfortable on the bike in the trainer and then find closed area to practice outdoor riding on.  Parking lots are usually good to start and then maybe fitness trials that allow bikes that are closed to vehicle traffic, then eventually park roads, where there are lots of other bikers and people are expecting bikes.  Stay off of the main roads at first.  I still try to avoid the main roads if I can.  I don't care how comfortable I get on the bike, I am not comfortable by myself on the roads.  I live in a very busy area, with lots of people in cars who are in a hurry to get no where.  I have super wide feet (almost squares) and wear a 41. My bike shoes are tri shoes (vents to let water drain and dry feet) to be worn without socks by Louis Garneau.  1 velcro strap for easy transition.  For the record:  I HAVE NO LOVE OF BIKING.  PLEASE TAKE ANYTHING I SAY WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.  I AM NOT AN EXPERT BUT I AM A SCARED RIDER THAT HAS WORKED TO OVERCOME THOSE FEARS.  I am fairly comfortable on a bike now and handle it well (I think).  It just still scares the crap out of me.

I think the trainer is for me, the idea of rollers scares me and I don't really need another part of biking to be scared of right now.  But, it is wonderful to hear from someone that has has worked through their biking fears.  I was also able to take the advice of riding with someone faster yesterday and that was really helpful.  I went riding with my husband - he can only ride on the weekends and usually we have a kiddo or two that he has to pull in the trailer, making him to slow - but thanks to those before mentioned grandparents we were able to ride trailer free.

Running-If you are afraid of injury and running is your weak discipline, then check out www.jeffgalloway.com.  Running with walk breaks to start can help especially as  you get into bricks (bike-runs).  Your legs are definitely fatigued coming off the bike and feel like jello.

Thanks for the link!  I'm always looking for new things to read/learn from in any discipline.

So you will find that I am easily influenced and subcumb easily to adult peer pressure.  My friend, MSUDan on BT, posted that he wants to do the Patriot HIM as his A race in the Boston area, near where his daughter is moving.  I am considering doing this with him.  He would wait for me at the end and is a great cheerleader.  Part of me wants to get back into tri's and do the longer distances (I am built more for endurance than speed).  This would be the perfect race for me to attempt (geographic and timing, and support).

What do you think?  Can I go from couch to HIM in 6 months?

Being a newbie I have no advice to offer, but I'd be happy to cheer you on!

Hi fellow Mad Manatees.  I am having a really really really bad day, but now that I'm all caught up on my Manatee reading, I feel a little better.  (story of said bad day is in training log)

I'm headed to Walgreens to pick up another tube of toothpaste for my son.  I dropped his in the toilet.  Do these random things only happen to me???

Sorry this post has nothing to do with training, but I've had nothing to do with training for a week or so.  I am excited for the new year!

I have the Capital of Texas Oly on my race plan too!! Exciting!  I was also thinking of doing the Route 66 1/2 Marathon as a end of year goal.

Great goals, way to go!

I think we passed by the "insanity" mile marker a while back. Welcome aboard the crazy bus.

I agree with Lynn. HIM in 6 mos is totally doable if you train consistently.

Truth be told, HIM in 6 mos is doable even if you don't, but it will really really really suck, and your azz will probably be numb for weeks afterward.

Oh ... what I'm rehabbing from ... other than my manifold addictions ... can't get rid of the triathlon one ...

I had a disease called chikungunya. I highly recommend trying to infect your enemies with it (actually, so did the U.S. government, for a while, but they couldn't train the mosquitoes properly). Among many other incredibly disgusting and inconvenient effects, it destroys the cartilage in your joints and does a nice number on your endocrine system => fatigue.

Recovery is generally in months, not weeks. And cartilage, apparently, don't come back fast.

Nobody really knows how to come back from it into a very active athletic lifestyle, so I was winging it until this really awesome piglet (trans. "any yummy juicy cute thing", so not a gender or age specific term) who's a prof of sports science and specializes in getting and keeping older athletes active dropped into my lap. In other words, he knows what to do with older people with chronic illnesses and osteoarthritis, which is basically what my body is like right now.

I push rest and recovery a lot as essential components of training, but the truth is, I suck at them. My life is always extremely full and even when I was *really* sick I took the 'time off' to be active on BT and write a novel.

I gotta remember the 2 out of 3 rule. Out of the 3 most important things in your life, you can really blast away at 2 of them during any given period (you can do 3 satisfactorily, but not excessively). This goes for triathlon, too. You can usually achieve 2 significant objectives in any given triathlon season.

Not 3.

What is everyone training for?

At the time, I am 4 weeks into a half marathon plan for a 10 mile run the end of March.  I could not find a plan I liked for that distance so I am going with the half.  No big deal since I will start to train for another full in a few months anyway.

Which plan are you using? I am morbidly curious about such things. (I hope you didn't already post that ...)

I'm toying with the idea of setting up a spreadsheet (EASY TO USE I PROMISE) on GoogleDocs that lists our group members, a couple relevant info pts, and then has columns for both goals as well as target races. With such a large and active group, it would certainly help at least Lynn and I keep track of everything, as well as for the rest of us to encourage each other ...

I am following one of Matt Fitzgerald's plans.  A friend recommended one of his books to me last summer The Runner's Edge and I liked his theories and his plans.  I followed one of his marathon plans this year and I survived the marathon!

Oh and I think a spreadsheet or something is a great idea!  I was toying with the idea of dropping from the group because it is so large but I decided not to.  I am just gearing up for my busy season at work so I was afraid I could not keep up here with a group this big.

I'm glad you stuck with us as your running experience is something I very much hope to learn from, but completely understand the feeling of the group size being overwhelming to keep up with.  I'm guessing we have actually already lost a few people (haven't seen some post since their intros)...so maybe the size is already a tiny bit smaller?

It's always like this at first, although admittedly we took far more people this year *because* 1) the groups always shrink a bit, 2) some people will post a lot and some not much at all, and 3) there's two of we mentors as well as a strong contingent of returnees/veteran athletes.

Here are my 'realistic' and 'hopeful' objectives ...

realistic
- get my health and structure back to where i can consistently do 'light' training, like enough to complete an oly
- get down to optimal racing weight, as opposed to just a decent weight
- work on long-distance swimming fitness, another 5k

hopeful
- actually compete in a short-course tri or finish a long-course tri
- 10k swim

I really like the idea of the Google Doc thing.  We have embraced Google Docs here at work, and they've grown on me.    So far I just added everyone as Friends - so I can cruise their training logs easier and post the Inspires there.

So, for someone that is in mediocre shape, but isn't super overweight, would it be possible to just go with the Original 13 week Sprint plan?  It says you should have a baseline for swim, run and bike - and I'm not sure if I have those, but I started on the Michael Pates 22 wk one back in November, and I think now that I missed a month of training due to sick kiddos - it is going to start me off too slow and not prepare me for my 03/20/11 Sprint date.  Thoughts?

13-week should be fine--just really listen to your body and be at a conversational/whole-sentence workout exertion, especially during the runs.
