Been putting fires out at work, and now about to climb on the trainer for 2 hours that will include a good bit of LT work. Got in late last night (this morning actually) and was determined to get 8 hours of sleep in but did not quite make it. I have been a little upside down in the sleep quality area this week.

Hopefully I will be able to pick up my new bike this afternoon - depends on what is going on with work when I am done with the trainer.

At the gym this morning -- lifting, short run (its cold and pouring rain outside) and a 2400 yard swim.

I'm trying to figure out my work schedule for the next few weeks.  I had several cases get busy all at once and it looks like I might have to travel.  Not good for consistency.

Kelly - I struggle with that quite a bit as well. I am on the road a lot. I have my regular travel back and forth to work in another state that I have pretty well figured out, but the other travel (conferences, lectures, development, recruitment, etc) always throws me for a loop. Seems like by and large I mostly only manage to get in runs and body-weight strength stuff while traveling, plus really get clobbered by the crush before a trip and the pile of work that went undone when I return. Any creative advice from the group for remaining consistent while work traveling is much appreciated!

Fred D - 2012-01-12 5:18 AM Ok whos training today? 75 min easy trainer ride and then some more stuff later.

Easy 30 min run for me followed by sitting on my butt for 5 hours in the car while driving to my yoga teacher training.

Lack of sleep is really catching up to me. Only 1 more 12 hour shift after today! Thinking about taking the night off - or, if the storm we are supposed to get hits, I'll be out shoveling snow. If I have energy after work, may hit the trainer for 30 minutes.

Legs feeling heavy today after my run last night. Very happy that my knees and hip don't hurt as they did during my previous run training. Thanks for all of the inspires. You all are a big part of why I pushed myself to get the run in despite my alter ego telling me to take it easy with a cold brew last night!

Have a great day one and all!

I had PT today. My PT did IMAZ in November so obviously get the appeal of IM and tris.

Today she said May or June would be where I would be ready from a strength and recovery perspective to start training for IMFL. Before then work on building back strength and movement patterns with swimming and biking but not building time.

I had been thinking April. I like training and around 10-12 hours a week is what my body likes to do.

I'm not sure if starting in June after then 7 months of recovery time will be enough time to train for IMFL. When I signed up I knew I may not be able to participate but I wanted the goal and possibility out there.

The idea of doing almost no training for next few months is hard to accept and makes me a bit sad.

A few months is not a long time if you heal properly.  Be a good girl and you'll be back before you know it!

Kathy,

I've had several surgeries and the hardest part was following the instructions of the medical folks.  Don't think short term but what you still want to be able to do in ten plus years.  Based on following the instructions and sometimes taking things that I believed was way too slow...I'm still able to run, bike, and swim relatively pain free...it is the age thing that I have the issue with.

x2.  May or June gives you more than enough time to prepare for IMFL.

KATHY,

I agree with everyone! You are in it for the long haul and May/June will be here in no time! It is more important right now to get your strength back so that your body can handle it once you start with serious IM training!

I know it is tough but you need to be patient right now and listen to your PT!We are here to support you

OK. I have officially decided to take the night off. A snow storm has rolled in so I'll have to be up uber early to clear the drive. Hopefully the snowblower starts otherwise I have a hell of a lot of shoveling to do! Why did I buy a property with such a long driveway??

Anyway, movie night and off to bed early. I hope everyone has had a productive day and a great Friday.

PT is going to get script for shoulder so she can help me with that. I got a cool muscle stim machine to help with my quad muscles.

This was in today's Hartford Courant and I really liked it and wanted to share:

As for motorists, "share the road" is not just a pleasantry, it is the law. Bicycles are not restricted to road shoulders and bike lanes. They are allowed on the roads, and can enter a center travel lane to turn left. Connecticut's "three-foot law" gives cyclists the right to that distance around themselves, even if they must use the travel lane to maintain three feet from an obstruction on the right.

Motorists, when turning left, have to wait for oncoming bicyclists just as they would for other oncoming vehicles. When drivers turn right, they can't cut off cyclists — just as they wouldn't cut off other slow-moving vehicles on the right.

And finally, it is not OK to honk at cyclists except to give a specific warning. An unexpected horn can distract and destabilize the rider.

OK, so here is my story, just turned 47, work in a start up company.

I started training for tris in May after watching the finish line of St Anthony's in St Pete.  I was told that I could do this.  I used to be a competitive volleyball player, swam and ran as a kid, and being from Belgium I did not get a car till into my twenties as we biked everywhere.  I have to say what I remembered from my swimming days and my first swim after a serious gap of 20+ (maybe it was 30+ for swimming laps) years was eye-opening and swimming is not like biking...  That was a slightly ruder awakening than what I had hoped.  Luckily adding in biking training was a little easier.

I had been jogging for a few years as a way of keeping sane during a long drawn out divorce.  My GP recommended Prozac (or equivalent) but anti-depressive drugs are not an option for me.  (How are you supposed to know you are happy when you do not go thru the sad phases)  So I jogged a few times a week, until a friend told me we should do the Rock&Roll Nashville half marathon in 2009.  So I upped my mileage without any plan or moderation and promptly ran myself to double meniscus surgery in April of 09.  First week back to sports (labor day weekend 2009), I thought I should diversify and played tennis for the first time in 19 years, and ruptured my achilles tendon.

2 years later I am happy to say I am back to normal.   After training for a few months, I did a sprint followed by an international distance.  And then (logically?) I signed up for the Rhode Island 70.3, I am doing the race together with my triathlete boyfriend which will be a ton of fun, I think   He is doing IMFL (his first IM), so I might volunteer there and if I survive the year without any injuries, the plan is to sign up for IMFL 2013.

Rhode Island was the only HIM that fit into my parenting plan (2 youngish kids)  and professional travel schedule.  I work from home (FL) which is great and travel to Europe every last week of the month.  That week I slow down because it is a trade off between sleeping or working out and being jet lagged sleep often wins.  While I try to get in 2-3 work outs running or or on the hotel's stationary bike, I have not tried finding pools to swim while traveling.

Because I have never actually ran a half marathon, I signed up for the ST Pete Half Mary on 12 Feb and am using a plan to monitor mileage, so far so good!  I also signed up for a winter tri camp locally.  My 26 week HIM plan (minus swimming) started this Monday.  Plan is to add the swim back in after the 1/2mary.

I had lost a lot of weight during the divorce that I keep off most of the time.  I tend to gain over the winter and then do a concerted effort to get it back off.  That is where I am at now, needing to get the 5-10 pounds off.

I am leaving Sunday for a 12 day trip and hope I can get in some running and biking.

 Pam

There have been several cycling deaths in the last year and the paper wrote an editorial about it.  Its been the law for a while but it doesn't prevent drivers from doing obnoxious things.  Shaun got mad at me last summer because I picked up the habit of grabbing onto cars mirrors when they try to see how close they can get to me.

Annabanana-I re-read your intro and can sooooooo relate!  I an 49 and will be 50 in November.  I haven't hit menopause yet, patiently waiting for the magical time in life.  Let's get on with it already!  But, I have noticed that it takes longer to recover from workouts.  Plus, the midlife female tummy drives me nuts.  Granted I've had five pups but for some reason my midsection is just pudgy.  What have you read about about that?  I have also read that the extra layer may be beneficial as well.  What's one to think?  Any way, you are for sure not alone.

QOTD (question of the day):  How many rest days do you take?

I usually rest on Wednesdays but otherwise make an effort to do something everyday.  I am tired a lot so maybe I need another rest day.  But then I feel like a total slacker.  Adequate sleep eludes me and certainly that is a contributing factor to my lethargy.

Yesterday I had a great MIW swim workout in the morning.  Getting a bit faster but still pretty slow relatively speaking.  Nonetheless, I am confident I could hold my own in a race.  I ran three on the mill at work and went to yoga.  Need to run more but that was all I could squeeze in during the work day.

Today it will be cold, around 9 degrees F but I may suck it up and run outside during lunch.  The mill is not my favorite but it gets the job done.  One must be tough!

So tragic to read about athlete deaths on the road.

I hope everyone has a great Friday and an even better long weekend, for those who live in the States and have Monday off for MLK.

Another question for the gals:  What saddle or bike shorts have you found to be most comfortable?  I have a Terry tri saddle and ancient shorts with a chamois liner.  Neither is comfortable and it is quite uncomfortable to lean forward.  Are there shorts that are soft and provide good cushion for one's private parts?  Maybe a gel short?  I have no idea what's out there for gals.

I LOVE my pearl izumo and louis garneau biking shorts (I've gotten them on sale coz they are not cheap), they are not especially padded but whatever it is they have, is magic.  Plus I got biking underwear in Belgium which lets me transform any yoga pant or running tight into biking gear....  they are not as comfortable but the convenience is great

I also have one of those adamo saddles that is split and is super comfy.  It came with my bike; not sure I would have purchased it separately but now that it's there, I am sure enjoying it and would highly recommend it.
