You guys are inspiring! Did 3.5mile walk/run at the soccer field last night while son at practice. Felt slightly silly passing the other soccer moms lined up in their camping chairs, but was so glad to use the time for training. Bike trainer ride later.

I think Elena mentioned getting a HRM - been thinking about this as well. I have very few gadgets and I try to avoid them, but getting to the point where I think it may be a necessary evil. I use my iPhone for everything. (mapmyride, etc). Not sure What the simplest approach is - I hear "garmin" thrown around a lot but there must be a simpler first step? Or, maybe, trying to start simple is not worth it in the long run?

Got some nice workouts going on today!  And there is no such thing as I "just" did 2 miles.  Every step forward is a victory to celebrate!  Mike, way to HTFU and get to the pool!

It must be a good day for swimming.  I decided to just swim to relax today rather than doing sets or pre-programmed drills.  It felt SOOO good.  Hope to start getting back out ot the lake soon for some OWS.

FWIW, I'm not a technology fan either, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my garmin.  I received a Garmin 305 as a gift several years ago, and am totally hooked.  Setup was really easy.  You might check Amazon to see if there are any 305's still out there.  That model has been discontinued and might be less expensive.  Seems like I got my last one for around $125.  Being able to upload my workouts and see HR and pace data really keeps me accountable.  And I love being able to alter my route mid-run and still capture everything.  Freedom!

Thanks for the well wishes on my first marathon.  I'm feeling so much better, and it hit me after packet pickup yesterday that I'm almost to the starting line.  Made me giddy and teary all at the same time.

Hope everyone is set for a great weekend of workouts and life.

Steve, guessing you are in final prep mode for your race.  Have fun!

1400 yards of swimming today, mixing in drills and intervals.  It did not feel good.  I did get a great email from my daughter's swim coach from the local high school.  She has volunteered to be my swim coach and meet me at the pool as much as I need.  I am learning one big lesson from my half ironman adventure, and that is that it is ok to ask for help.

Great news. Nothing like having someone who knows what they are doing watching you and giving you instruction. I'm hoping its a huge help for you.

This whole site exists for the purpose of letting you ask for help!

Hrm I have a 3 mile run and short 750 yard swim for today.  It is snowing again today.  Looks like everyone is getting it done and taking names.

Tip for the day, when putting on your wetsuit, first put a cheap plastic bag from the grocery store on your foot then step into your wetsuit, rince and repeat for other foot then pull the bag out the bottom.  I didn't believe this would work at first but it rocks, gets your feet down and through easily.

Second tip, make sure your timing chip strap and watch are not over your wetsuit when you try to take it off, it is not pretty don't ask how I know.... will add like 5 minutes to your t1.

Trivia question for our newer members: Do you know if your next race has wetsuit strippers and why would they be at your triathlon (experienced folks hold off on answering for a bit)?

For those who may eventualy buy a non-kmart mountain bike for races, feel free to ask questions.  There is a tri or TT bike and then there are standard road bikes.  The geometry is different.  On a tri bike you are out on your elbows and on a regular bike you have those rams horns.  Both have similar weight, shifting is different.  Then you have clipless pedals, which means you have shoes that clip into the pedals.  Welcome to a new level of ooopps at stop signs.  Wear your elbow pads for the first couple of rides.

You and me both!  That is probably the #1 thing that I have learned through all this tri stuff.  That, and to get over how silly I might feel or look in the process.

Nice swim Mitch!  And thank you!  I feel as ready as I'm gonna get

Oh the hrm gps watches own.  I have had a Garmin 405 for 4 years with no problems.  It gives you pace, heart rate, elevation etc.  What is really cool is you can set it to mark your pace for every mile and give you a continuous display of how fast you are running etc.  It is great for doing intervals when not on a track.  For me it was definately worth the $$, I use it nearly every day.

Timex has come out with a similar watch that is often on sale.  The timex battery ( up to 15 hours) may last longer than the garmin battery (7-8 hours).  My garmin does not keep a charge long enough for my long bike rides...

Shop around you can often get last years model for a good price.  My A list for purchases are:

1. Decent running shoes.

2. A tri suit

3. A tri or road bike.

4.  A wetsuit

5. Garmin/or Timex GPS/HRM watch.

I have the Timex GPS/HRM and I like it. It does take a really long time to find a satellite at times though, I have heard that Garmins are much quicker wit this!

Ugh, I'm with you on the race day weather Steve.  Current forecast is for severe thunderstorms (hail, high winds, tornado potential) between 9:00 am and noon on Sunday.  Marathon start is 7:30 am.  But this is TX, so the forecast could change 20 times between now and then.

Be happy you are not running Boston -- forcast is low/mid 80's and sunny.

sick again. Maybe the pool wasn't the best idea. Off to bed with hopes of a recovery so I can do my bike ride tomorrow.

Yesterday ended up being really windy so I wimped out of the bike and ran again.. 3 miles... no hip/leg discomfort at all this morning so that is good.  Today looks like yard work day, not sure if I'll get any training in.

Yard work IS training!

Spent the morning at a local 5K cheering my husband on. VERY proud of him!  Also saw a friend from church out there...doing her first 5K.  Even got my "taper legal" 20 minute jog in before the race.  A good time was had by all.

Felt OK when I woke up so I jumped on the trainer and was supposed to do a 3 hour ride. After 2, I had to unexpectedly do a few thing around the house. So later today I'm going to FINALLY go ride outside. Hope to do an hour on the bike, then get in a brick run of 15 or maybe 30 mintues.

I spent a little time checking out some of your logs.

James:  I WANT that hat!!!  That is awesome!  Is there a way I can get one?!?

Joe& Steve et al., Is the use of a Garmin the way that you get  all that info onto your log?  Just by uploading?  re: calories in/out/ from lifestyle/ from activities.  How handy is that!!

Last thing:  what is the purpose of having "friends" on your logs?  For support only?

4200 yard swim yesterday (forgot to post), just finished a 13.1 mile run this am! My feet are sore, but nothing like they used to be! So darn happy to see myself start to make gains again! Tomorrow long bike, supposed to do 60 but we'll see how goes! I hope everyone has a great weekend of training and/or racing!

The calories in/out is a BT thing.. You can set it on in your settings. The purpose of friends for me.is an easy way to follow people's logs that I'm interested in and/or following fellow mentor group members.
