Our local event organizer has "Tri for Kids" events at each race: 50m swim, 3 mi bike, 1 mi run.  I've already told Nate he can enter one next year if he can swim across the pool (they do the swim parallel to shore so the kids could stand up anywhere, so it's still safe).  I think I have a new training partner...he (and I) can't wait!

Kids tris rock - my girls are "training" for one later in August. Theirs is in the pool - and the organizers even allow kickboards in the pool and training wheels on the bike. (They also have a volunteer in transition whose whole purpose is to help with shoe tying!).

My older daughter (10) did one at 7 and 8, but then was too busy last year. Now that she's 10, she goes up to the "longer distance"...100m swim, 4.5 mi bike, 1.5 mi run. My younger daughter (7) is going to do her first one this year (50m swim, 1.5 mi bike, 0.5 run). SO excited for both of them.

Not racing yet. I have still not mastered my base mileage.  There's a sprint next weekend I'm tempted to tri (pun?) but with my wife about to give birth to son #3, I'm not sure she'd appreciate it too much.

If all goes according to plan tomorrow though I will set a new PR for distance on the bike, just shy of 13 miles.

I was thinking about the 'dreaded' workout that's so easy to skip: too tired, not enough time, I'll do it later, I'll make it up....  The justifications are endless.  I know them all (too well!).

But then it occured to me:  Some of the BEST workouts are the ones that start off as "I REALLY want to skip today".  Overcoming that train of thought and Just DOING it is the best feeling ever.  Even if you run/bike/swim/yoga slowly or poorly.  You did it when you didn't want to.

I'm going to try and focus on that the next time I want to skip a planned wrokout!!

*disclaimer* I may be sleep deprived and spewing random useless nonsense today *end disclaimer*

Absolutely.  Last night I knew I couldn't R/B/S because my wife was out and I had to stay home with the kid and I just really wanted to run and nothing else (nice and cool out) so I had a fight with myself during the second inning of the Red Sox game and finally I just went downstairs to do a P90X workout and about halfway through the thing (and after) just felt amazing.  Now I can store that workout in my mind for about 2-3 weeks for the next time I don't feel like working out and remember how good it was.  After 3 weeks the thought expires and I need re-motivation.

Kudos to all of you who already logged today's miles/meters/minutes.  Anybody racing this weeeknd???

I'm doing the local Warrior Dash this weekend.  Ironically I completely forgot about it.  Until they emailed everyone with last minute tips.  I had to call my husband and timidly say "guess what I forgot..."

Now we're driving 1.5 hours to run a 1 hour race.  Hopefully it's fun and not too frustrating!

ebshot - 2012-07-20 6:41 AM I think today might be a rest day.  I'm not sure.  I was supposed to ride w/a friend (trirific10) but it's raining.  So, no go.  I could run but I have run 2 days in a row. I think I'll play it by ear.

Also, I took my 9 y/o on the bike path last night for his first ride of a significant distance.  He did awesome and we cranked out 8 miles.  I'm so proud of him.  He's had a lot of challenges in his short 9 years but he did amazing.

That's Awesome!  My oldest is working on her swimming so she can do her first triathlon in October. Her summer goal was to run a 5k by the end of summer, and she is almost up to 2 miles, but has been focusing on her bike since she got her training wheels off!

Congrats to your munchkin!  Our middle daughter has been doing great on her bike, and I am more than thrilled to credit her occupational therapy for that.  She is even talking of doing soccer.  She amazes me everyday with what she goes through, and she is probably my biggest inspiration!

My guy is too!  However, he can only play if he is not in a clinical program after school.  So that means we need our school district to pay for an outplacement to a clinical day school.  Finger's crossed that we will get the recommendation next week and the district is on board with the plan.

hills or heat, hills or heat... Hoping to do IM in 2013, was debating between LP and Louisville, I'm away all next week at a cottage without internet access so I figured my decision was made for me because I wouldn't have internet access to attempt to register. While work gave me an internet stick, so now I can attempt to register...

so hills or heat... neither are great for a big guy...

Anyone have any thoughts on which race I should go for, I have a couple of days to think about it

Hills are way better than heat, they're only tough on the way up, then you get to go down. There's no break from the heat!

Cindy came home last night deep in the throes of an allergy attack and woke up no better, so no bonus walk this morning.

Bike - 0615 - 9.0 miles - 43:16  The alarm went off at 0600 and I got up.  Cindy said she was too wiped out to go so I got back into bed.  I can't ever go back to sleep after I've heard the alarm so I was just going to lie there until she got up.  Then I decided I could probably finish my workout for the day before she got up and still have time to make her coffee and breakfast before she left for work.

  • 1st lap = 21:19
  • 2nd lap = 21:56
  • Total time = 43:16
  • Avg speed 12.5 mph

I was bumming about the time because it felt better than that.  When I saw 21:19 on the first lap I was hoping for 42 something for a final time.  But I feel better about it now that I've seen it written out.  First of all, I did shave time.   Second, my 2nd lap was only a little slower than my first lap.  All things considered I'd have to count this as a good ride.

Smartphone users:  While I was in The Bike Shop in State College, PA  yesterday the salesman showed me a free app to record your runs/rides.  I just used it and it recorded my ride on a map, gave me a GPS distance, elapsed time, and average speed.  On the ride he showed me it also gave him stopped time and moving time on his record.  Search for an app called Strava.  It's free.  They have Strava Cycle and Strava Run.

Morning!

I'd take hills over heat also - you can always walk up the hills and roll down them if necessary.

The weather appears to be quashing my best-laid workout plans. It looks like stormy, stormy, and a little more stormy for the weekend. I need to run 4 (which I can do on a treadmill - no worries on that), but I was hoping to get my bike off the trainer and see if I still know how to steer, stop, etc. before my race next month. Looks like another trainer ride for me. And of course they'll close the pool if they even imagine they hear thunder.

Oh, well - I'll make the best of it, whatever it is.

Fingers crossed for you!  I am hoping for the PPCD program for mine this coming year, but so far we just get speech therapy.  We have outside OT, etc.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Got my 14.5 on my bike today in 44:18.  Absolutely beautiful day and I felt good so I got out of the saddle a lot and tired to go after it quite a bit.  Still tough only being able to ride in high gears, lots of crossing on the chain and some difficulty getting to any low gears.  I did go hard after a few hills which felt great.  Went to a BBQ after but of course my son just wanted to play in the pool all day so I ended up in there for a couple hours and now I'm totally spent.  Same thing tomorrow but maybe a little less pool time for dad.

Had the alarm set for 5:30 this morning and I couldn't even sleep in that late. Rode the bike 10 miles to the gym, swam for an hour, and rode 10 mi back home. Today was the best workout I've had in a long time. I just felt like I had a ton of energy. Usually I am just dragging butt on the way home, but I think I could have gone another 10. If it wasn't for the fact that I promised the Mrs to be home before 9am, I probably would have tried.

Going to try to get another 20+ on the bike tomorrow.

Have a good weekend all!

It is a great place... the mapped ride above turned around right before my place at Arcola bridge.  Minnetonka is a great place to live and play!

Hey, all -

Hope you're having a good weekend. I ran "long" yesterday, did a little bike & a little swim today, and have a 5K race tomorrow night. Keeping right with my training schedule and feeling fairly good about it.

Went to the pool with my kids today - I needed to time them so I could sign them up for their triathlons (needed an estimated 50 m time). Turns out the little one can do flip turns. I can't do flip turns!!! So proud of both of them and excited to see them tri in August.

This weekend was a bust as far as training goes.  Yesterday was a rest day but today I was planning on riding the trainer but I had to get the shed painted first.  I didn't realize how long it would take.  5 hours later I am done and exhausted.  Another rest day.

I am weighing in tomorrow and hope to see a lower number this week than I saw last week.  I'm aiming to be down 2 more pounds.  We'll see!

Rode 60 miles on Saturday and felt great. Had my average speed at 19.8 mph which is good for me but the route was pretty flat though.

Was sore Sunday so I just lifted weights and had alot of family time.

Now its 4:20 am and I'm heading out for a long run.

Have a great Monday.

Friday after work I took the family to the LBS to use a groupon certificate I scored last week. Ended up getting a tire change kit with CO2 cartriges and a new tube alogn with some other small things, including my first ever GU. Or should I say EW. Maybe I'm just not a lemon/lime fan.

Saturday was my long bike, the route I planned was 12.5 miles which is my longest ride to date. The path is nice because half way point is a gas station where I got a water. Got rolling after my water break and about 1/4 mile later I got a flat on the rear wheel.  Boy was I glad I had the tube and tire kit i bought the night before!! First ever tire tube change.  First time ever using the CO2 kits.  I broke one of the tire levers, sigh. Then I blasted through the first CO2 cartrige without getting ANY in the tire, sigh. On the second and last CO2 cartrige I got it right. Or so I thought until I mounted the bike and realized I had about 1/2 inflation, sigh. Anyway...I did get a chance to see that the used bike I bought was in DESPERATE need of a good cleaning, which has to be effecting my efficiency. Struggled the rest of the way home fighting my half inflated tire on a fairly hilly and slow course.  It was a great workout though . Ended up with a 13.25 average pace over the 12.5 miles.

Sunday was a rest day and today I did a 5k trying to push it a little. I broke 30 mins (barely) with a time of 29:44.

I hope you all have a great day and solid workouts!

No more reports on Cindy's walk.  Just consider it a given, and a warm-up, like I do.

Walk - 0805 - 2.77 miles - 50:23 - avg 18 min/mi - avg 3.3 mph - Tried using Strava to record my walk this morning.  Didn't work, so I downloaded the MapMyRun app.  So far, I am much more impressed with it.  It does everything the Strava did AND it will give you an elevations profile and 1 mile splits of your workout as well.  Pretty cool, just in case any of the newer folk aren't familiar with it.

Before you dis GU entirely, try the chocolate or the vanilla...I personally think they taste like frosting (or the chocolate mint at x-mas - somehow santa always knows to put some in my stocking)...

The chocolate is really good!  I also like the espresso.  I am not a fan of the berry flavors myself, but the chocolate mint, etc is good.  Laughing
