Well, without going into a full blown race report, I'll give you the short-ish version.

I was happy with my swim, considering that's what I sacrificed most during the whole house selling/packing/moving/unpacking process through June and July. I've probably done a third of the swims in the Fink plan. Goal was 40min. I did it in 38:35.
The bike was incredible......for me!! Goal was 3hrs flat. I came in at 2:43:00. Really, really excited about that time!!!!
Then the run.......nutrition was on point I even had to stop at the port-o-potty for a pee break as I entered T2. Got to about mile 2.5 and felt that "twinge" in both my quads. got to the aid station at mile 3, and as soon as I slowed down to walk.....boom...both quads cramped up. So I mostly walked the next 1.5miles. Then the quads loosened up and I as back on track. I think the combo of Coke and ice down the front of my tri shorts did the trick!!!!! So I found my stride/pace and felt strong at the end of the first loop. THEN, I get to mile 8.5 and the arches in both feet start to ache. I hit the aid station at mile 9 and my feet feel like I'm walking on shards of glass. So I was forced to walk the last 4 miles. When I say walk, I mean limp!.
I finished in 5:59:54. I bat my 2011 time by 34 minutes. I had a pretty damn good chance at going sub 5:40.

The running situation was my own fault!!! I ran in my Brooke Cadence shoes aka my race shoes. Clearly they do not offer enough arch support/cushion for my feet in a longer distance run. I've worn them in a 5mile, and two 10k races, and I've been just fine. I also used the Cadence for my Wednesday brick runs. Every other training run I do in my Brooks Adrenaline GTS. So, needless to say, I now know what NOT to do in Arizona!!! I will be wearing the Adrenaline GTS, FOR SURE!!

I pretty much hobbled around the house Sunday night. Went to bed around 8:00 and took 1 Percocet, since my feet hurt quite a bit. Then around 10:30 I woke up from a dead sleep because it felt like my right foot was being stabbed. It was excruciating. The pain never went away the rest of the night. So at 2:30am I took 2 more Percocet....and....NOTHING!! Those 2 Percocet did absolutely nothing for the pain. At this point I'm freaking out, thinking I really messed up my foot!! As soon as 8:00am hit I was on the phone with Kaiser demanding an appt asap..........if you know about Kaiser, then you understand why I had to demand an immediate appt. I was able to get in at 2:00. As the day went on the pain slowly started to go subside. By the time I got to the doc, I wasn't hobbling as bad as i had been earlier in the morning (when I finally got out of bed at 7:30, I literally crawled to the bathroom because my right foot hurt so bad!!!) So the doc checked out my foot and took an xray. She was able to rule out a stress fracture, for now. She was petty confident that it is just a soft tissue contusion. But it could also be tendonitis. Posterior Tibial Tendonitis she called it. So no running for at least a week. Biking and swimming are okay though. If the pain is not completely gone in 10 days I get to go back in to check again for a stress fracture and re-evaluate the tendonitis. If it's either of those issues then I get a spiffy walking boot for a couple of weeks!!
BUT, I woke up today & I'm just sore. No pain like I had Sunday and yesterday. Plus the swollen area on my right foot is pretty much gone & I can touch it with almost no pain when I push on it. I can also stand on one foot today, on my tip toes even. Couldn't even come close to attempting that yesterday. The Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, and ibuprofin are all working well. I'll probably stop the ibuprofin tomorrow......I'm not a fan of taking medicine unless it absolutely necessary.

So that's about it. Yes, that was the short-ish version. I left out the nutrition commentary and additional comments about the swim, T1, bike, and T2 comments. I might do a full blown race report later this week. If I do, I'll add the link to it on this thread

You had a very good race going up until your foot troubles. I had something very similar happen to me after the 2010 NYC Marathon. Like you, my foot was in serious pain so I saw a doctor who told me to take it easy. I was back to normal about 2 weeks later...

It is funny that you sign up a year in advance and you think you have all this time to train and then wham it is 98 days till race day and you feel like you haven't been training even though you have from the time you signed up. I guess now that it is getting closer to race day and that reality has hit that I will be racing in an Ironman event!

Totally agree. I get the same feelings about once a week even though I've been training hard. I guess it's natural to always think about what we shoud be doing as opposed to trusting our training plans.

Did the Mountain Man Olympic Tri yesterday up in Flagstaff. Definitely a tough but great race! Personally, I was excited to see the monotonous and boring HR training finally pay dividends. I was able to keep my HR's lower while my speeds increased. Confidence booster for sure

I started on my 13 week to 13hrs program today. I have been mainly base building since the Wildflower in May. I did a few bricks close to HIM distance ranges and felt just fine kinda going slower than usual and shooting for a flat 6:15 time. Hopefully, the 13 week build will be sufficient to bridge the gao between a half and full

I started to get back on track with my running today. The doc said to take 7-10 days off from running. It has been 8 and my foot has felt fine since Sunday. Fink plan called for a 1 hour run today. But I only went 34 minutes (8.5min. miles). No foot pain!!! I might skip the brick tomorrow and just do an hour bike, instead of 45 bike/15 run. Friday I'll do 45 min run. If Friday still feels good, then I'll do an hour run on Sunday.
Next week, in the Fink plan, calls for an Olympic distance tri. I'll probably just repeat the run durations from this week. And that should put me back on track.......barring any set backs. Which will not happen <--------positive thinking.

The thing I am least looking forward to are 3.5 hour rides the next two Saturdays..........on the trainer!!!!!!!! I'm at the firehouse the next 2 Saturdays. So, I'll be relegated to the trainer for my long rides. Plus, who knows how consistent the time on the bike will be. When calls come in, gotta go. Then come back and pick up where I left off. Oh well, working out at work is a privilege for me

On those long rides on the trainer, I know my pace will be slower however I look at it more as mental training. Yeah, I am getting the time in the saddle but I am also working the mundane of riding in the same spot for 3 hours, kinda like doing the same loop 3 times.

Hope your foot holds out for you.

I'm in the process of renting race wheels for IMAZ. Any IMAZ vets here have a specific wheel setup that they like on this bike course? I'm leaning towards the HED Jet 6 front wheel and Jet 9 rear wheel.

Not sure if folks have used certain setups in the past to take into account the flat, but possibly windy course?

I reserved mine today through HED. They will be onsite race week, they have great wheel options, and the rental cost includes implementation and any repairs. They charge $100 for the race which is $60-$100 cheaper than TriBikeTransport who is the only other wheel rental company that will be at the race.

I went with the Jet 6 in the front and Jet 9 in the rear. I spoke with a customer service rep who told me you have up until 3 weeks before raceday to make any changes to your reservation

Well, sounds like the IMAZ run course has officially been changed. Going to a 2-loop format where we'll run east out of T2 to McClintock, do a u-turn and run west to Priest. The Curry hill is still part of the course. Here's how it was explained to me -

The new route, as I understand it- exit T2 and head EAST toward mcclintock, then double back to priest, head north, then east along the north bank toward rural, do the curry hill loop, then back to do it again. No map released yet

There should be an asterisk next to all of you 2013 finishers since you only have to run the hill twice as opposed the the rest of us that had the endure it three times at past races. Wink

I'd happily run the hill 3 times if it meant I got the original course where I would see my family 6 times. I am not happy with this change. It will be fine just not what I was anticipating. Seeing my people is big for me.
