I'm up for a challenge! I participated in several challenges within the challenge forum in Nov & Dec. They really do up the motivation! How about something to do with core work? Its an area that i overlook. Or are you wanting to so something that utilizes all 3 disciplines? Either way count me in!

I agree that HR training is good, but I disagree if you are saying RPE has no place in training. Both if used properly can be advantageous to training.

RPE: Rating of perceived exertion is an easier way to assess intensity than heart rate because it does not require a timer or heart rate monitor. RPE is relative to individual perceptions of difficulty and individual physiological makeup. Its drawback lies in being subject to variance in individual tolerance for discomfort, but the more it is used, the more useful it becomes for giving a comparative perception of difficulty. One must be honest with their RPE scores and should stay between the 5-8 levels during training. (and those scores are different for everyone, thus making it difficult to measure)

HR: Most people will use the old ancient scale of 220 - your age to get the max HR zone and base everything off that. If you are not using a Lactate threshold heart rate (LTHR) test to determine your zones, than a HR monitor will only be a recording device for your run. You will need to do a LTHR test for running, biking and swimming for this to be accurate and it should be done every few weeks, because hopefully you are making gains from all your training.

So to say that RPE training is not good is something I disagree with in a flat statement. One may be better than the other, but I know gains can be made using either.

To be fair, I didn't say RPE is not good, I said HR is better. It does have it's place (eg comparing HR and RPE), but for more advanced and specific training, I believe HR is best.

I don't disagree with what you are saying regarding RPE.

AS you said, 220-age is useless. Don't use this.

Well hopefully this group will continue past February, so why not do something like James suggested - or like some in the challenge forums - set yourself a goal for each activity in either minutes or miles/km's/yds/metres, and then keep track as the month goes by.

In March, set a challenge to do at least a 60s bridge/plank/ab exercise every day???

Thoughts?

I'm in for a challenge for sure!!!  After bailing on my workout this morning, it is obvious I need an additional "push" of motivation.

I'm up for a challenge!!!  Anything to make me work harder would be great!

On a side note.......anyone know a good reason that I can give my wife for buying a bike trainer?  I've already purchased a bike and a bunch of other items for the season.  I also need to get a helmet, shoes, and a bike rack/carrier for the car.  With the new baby, getting her approval on items is VERY difficult.  She's still not too happy about the bike (still in the box in the basement...it's too cold to ride and I don't have a trainer).  I had to pull the trigger on the bike then because the price was WAAAAYYYYY too good to pass up at the time.  She sort of buys the "I saved us money" argument.  Or do you guys think a trainer can wait considering the other three items I need (Those three are required for racing)?

Anyway....just needed to rant a little about my worries.  Any help from people have to "negotiate" with their significant other about purchases would be GREATLY appreciated.  Laughing

I got nuthin'.....sorry.

The only thing that I'd suggest is asking for giftcards from Performance Bike or other national bike retailer (nashbar, etc) and saving up the money for it. That's how I got my trainer, components, etc. The wheels....well...I just bought those. She didn't need to know the $$$ on that one.

Regarding what should be purchased first.....shoes and helmet. That's a must! Then a trainer....then a bike carrier (if you really need it). I used to have an Accord for a company car and by taking the front wheel off, could get it in there.

Look on Craigslist for a used trainer or try to get the word out that you're looking for a trainer. You never know what someone may have that they don't need (Right JFord???? )

Definitely check out Craigslist.  If nothing else, you can get a cheapy for the time being until the Spring and then you won't need it again until next winter (at which point, you might be able to come up with the money).  That's what I did last year, but still don't have the money for a good one, so I'm using the cheapy again.  It's worked well for what it is, but I'm asking for a nice one as my graduation gift from pharmacy school this summer!

And yes, I'm definitely up for a challenge!  I've been thrown off my training schedule this week with a funky internship schedule.  I've missed 2 days of training and had one session cut short.  Ugh!  Can't wait to get back into my normal schedule and get back on track. In the meantime, I've got a 5k coming up in 2 weeks (won a free entry) and a small indoor tri 2 weeks after that.  Should be a nice gauge of where I'm at so far in my training (definitely feel like I'm further behind than I was at this point last year).

OK February challenge ideas?

A. Everyone complete the IM distance in their training by a certain date. 2.4 miles swim, 112 bike, 26.2 run

or

B. I like the core/Ab workout idea. Everyone can either set a number of crunches they will commit to doing or the number of minutes of planking they will do

or

C. We pick a total mileage for each segment and go for it, i.e. 200 miles biking, or 100 miles running or something like that

I am kinda leaning towards option B myself cause I know I need core work, but majority vote wins.

B for my vote.

Need to do more core (other than my normal sit-ups).

Core work for me! I plan to do at least 50 crunches & at least 3 minutes of planking EVERY DAY in February. I'm also going to up my mileage in run & bike in Feb too. Let me get through January and will give specific #'s for Feb. BTW, I may have jinxed myself with the "runner" title... DANGIT!! I think I have shin splints! WTH!!. I've never has them. But having discomfort in shins this month especially the past 2 weeks. They hurt even when the dog rubs up against them. GRRR.

Ok! OK!  Core work challenge.  I don't even know where to begin.  I have a small "core work" routine I have been doing but it sounds like I'm way behind the rest of you.  Maybe we could make February our Core Challenge and March can be our Mileage Maker challenge.

I agree with others that you should get the helmet, shoes etc before the trainer.  When I went looking for a trainer my husband wanted to buy the best of the best!  I love his support of my addiction but not the spending of a lot more money.  I evaluated the number of days on my training schedule that I bike and how many of those I would be using the trainer.  Since I use my spinning class at the gym twice a week for my biking workouts, there are only a couple days a week that I would be on the trainer.  The cold winter months aren't here year round.  So.....having said all that, we ended up getting a cheap trainer from Performance for $100.  I had looked on Craigslist and Ebay.  I couldn't find anything cheaper.  My only reason for allowing myself to spend the money was that I had spent a LOT of money on a tri bike and needed to adjust to the new position before my HIM May 5.  I knew there would not be much opportunity to ride outside before then.  Because this is my year for my first full Ironman, my husband and I went into it knowing it was going to cost us and we prepared for it.  I am hoping that EVENTUALLY the "need" for stuff diminishes.

Tell your wife that having a trainer will help keep you around the house more and be able to help out, it will also allow you to stay up later and ride which won't effect family time!   BOOM!!  Yeah, I am just that good!

So let's do the core/AB challenge for Feb and a mileage challenge for March!

Decide what your goals are: mine will be a specific number of crunches to do, and I am upping the ante. I am taking a picture on Feb 1 and on Mar 1 to see if I see a difference. (and No, Brad, you can not get a copy). Please post your goal before Feb 1!

You know.....there is an ab workout that I used to do a couple of years ago that I found here on the Beginner Triathlete site.  The writer calls it "Around the World".

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=486

It's a pretty stout workout that hits every single muscle group in your core.  I'm thinking about doing this with a specific goal of reps by the end of the month.  This plus the core work in all the Insanity workouts will be really tough!!!!  Not sure yet about my goal/challenge for February.  Still thinking about it.....
