Working out in the morning isn't so much a motivation issue but a habit issue. Every societal norm tells you to be in bed at that time of the morning. It feels really unnatural to be out the door and training. It gets easier after a few weeks, it still sucks, but its easier. |

We watch reruns of In the Middle, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead. Not much else. I don't know if I could do a show while running or cycling, I might have to give it a try, but it would have to be something like Ironman. Where can I watch an hour or longer episode of an Ironman race? |

We're almost finished with Breaking Bad - sooo good. Sadly, I just did 90 minutes on the trainer flipping between 16 & Pregnant and CSI Miami. Yeah, I need to get a life. The other things we've been watching are HBO mini-series (e.g., John Adams, Band of Brothers, etc.) - good stuff. We're actually watching John Adams again with my daughter now as she is studying that historical period. |

Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed A couple of thoughts on power on the bike (both with actual power meters and with virtual power systems like trainer road). 1. Power is unique to the bike and the meter. I have a Quarq and you may have a Quarq but the calibration may be slightly different so my 150 watts is not equal to your 150 watts. 2. That being said the absolute number isn't particularly meaningful. In training what you use power for is to either gauge progress or to serve as a governor for workouts. In either of these cases the abolsute number doesn't matter, what matters is that you either improve your specific number or that you stay within your specific range. There are no prizes for maintaining X number of watts or having number of wats during an initial test. 3. Same think applies to racing. You use watts to govern your race and a good bike is not measured in absolute number of watts but in maintaining or increading watts over the course of a ride. Biggest take away is comparing numbers between two different people with two different setups doesn't tell you a whole lot. |

Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed Michele - I liked the first few seasons of Weeds but it kind of went off the rails from there. One can watch full Ironman races on you tube. So I leave for Florida in two days to do the Disney 1/2 marathon. I started with this group last December, began working with a coach right around this time, and have been training since. So, it will be interesting to see what my time is going to be. Last year I posted a 1:52. I ran a 1:51 for my HIM in September - so I am shooting for 1:40ish. The weather has been brutal here in Maine for a while and I have been forced to do most of my runs on a treadmill. For some strange reason my pace is much slower and my HR is much higher at the same paces/zones on the treadmill than on the run. I had the longest run ever last weekend outside and was much faster. All that to say I am actually looking forward to running outside and in shorts. Will post later. |

My adventure racing get ups can easily look dorkier than most tri kits. I'll see if I can find a photo and post it. I watched a movie while doing my bike workout today. I really enjoyed it. Wasn't a hard workout today so it was easy to pay attention. |

I love my trainer now that I have the speed/cadence sensor. I like watching the pretty graphs and numbers on TrainerRoad. Dreadmill for shorter runs, bundle up for longer runs...although I'm only in the mid-Atlantic, so I don't have the snow and bitter cold. That being said, my blood is much thinner than when I lived in the midwest. |

Champion 6107 Out running or enjoying a fine glass of red... | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed So...trainer question(s). (And thanks for the power info, Kelly - I'm hoping to use it to govern/push my workouts this winter...I'm not terribly disciplined on the trainer otherwise.) I have a road bike and a tri bike. I put speed/cadence sensor on the roadie because I prefer to ride that one on the trainer. That being said, I know I should devote some of this winter to getting more comfortable on the tri bike (bought it last season) and working on my aero core. My training plan has me riding 3-4x a week - my plan is to do the 2 harder sessions on the roadie, so I can watch the power graphs, and then 1 longer slow/endurance ride on the tri bike. Does that make sense? Is there a smarter way? And then question 2 - last year I rode the stock saddle that came with the tri bike. I'm thinking it is time to invest in a better saddle, because I don't really like the one on it...but how long do I need to ride it to decide whether it's the saddle or the change in position? The bike was professionally fit when I bought it. I know I've been riding it for a season, so I should know whether I like the saddle, but I'm considering this year as kind of starting over as far as cycling goes, since I'm putting more effort into it than I have previously. Anyway, so I'm wondering - a month? Two months? If I'm only riding it for 1 long ride/week...when should I start saddle shopping, if necessary? |

I love my trainer. It's a way for me to get my base training in and not have to cash in any hall passes with the Misses. Normally I do my long rides on the weekends starting at 6:30 or 7 and running 2-4 hours. Right now I'm starting at 4 AM ish and I'm done by the time people wake up. |

1. Make sure the measurements are identical with the two bikes. Crank length, relationship of the saddle to to bottom bracket, etc. Basically if your leg angles are different throughout the pedal stroke you will be working the muscles from different angles. You won't reap all the benefits you can. If you have them set up correctly I see no issue with keeping your roadie on the trainer and riding outside on your tri bike.
2. If your bike fit was done correctly (meaning they did a flexibility assessment too. Very crucial) it should take you maybe a month to adjust, maybe a bit more if you're set up a tad too aggressively. I'm thinking about changing out saddles too. Going to take a run at the Cobb JOF. |

Well the trainer obviously for the bike, with more workouts early before work. When I still lived in the Colorado mountains (until 2 months ago) my winter running was more dreadmill with some bundled up long runs, some running on snow packed dirt roads. Now, in Seattle, it's all outdoor running with minimal bundling which is awesome. Granted it is a bit damp, but at least it beats running in 10 degree weather. |

New user 43 Robbinsville | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed Being new to the sport, I have done all of my heavy bike days in the gym on a spin bike or a computrainer. I am in NJ and the weather has not been cooperative so far this winter. I did, however, steal some of the ideas I have seen everybody posting. Yesterday I had to cram two big workouts into one. I spent an hour and a half in the pool. ( All of the swimming tips must have helped, I can now finish a 3260 swim workout as planned in front crawl.) Thanks to everyone who helped me out with that! Immediately after the swim I jumped on the bike. Not knowing if I had the two hour session in me, I loaded the 2013 Ironman WC on my phone and went to town. Two hours later I emerged. Not only was the Ironman motivational, but I watched swim technique videos, transition videos and got into that total immersion program. Being a newbie, this will get me through this winter's training! AWESOME. Which leads me to my next question. I am seeing two distinctly different philosophies on tri swimming. One says a long stroke, where you utilize the glide, and with a bigger hip rotation to "cut" through the water. ( Total Immersion, kinda ) The other seems to be the super high elbows on the recovery, early vertical forearms, with a high elbow pull. A more choppy stroke with a higher turnover rate. ( Swallow, who came out of the water 3rd in 2013 WC ) Which technique is most common? It seems to me the short choppy stroke is faster and protects your head better, but it may take more energy. And I am no speed demon in the pool, but I can walk away from a 3260 swim and not have to worry about energy. Does that matter? |

The best answer is a mixture of the two. TI (Total Immersion) is GREAT for balance. You can incorporate a good amount of the balance drills as a newbie so that you get the proper rotation and your hips don't sink on a regular basis. It is great for pool swimming. That said swimming in a pack is a whole other animal. You will lose the room to glide. If you swim with proper balance and pull technique it won't really be that much more of an aerobic tax by swimming with a higher turnover. It's comparable to cycling with a high cadence.
