Thanks everyone!  I'd be doing the happy dance if I wasn't afraid of injuring it again!  LOL

yep, i've had to lay off biking and running since mid november - there is a whole lot of purple going on in my training log!

YAAAAY Beth!!! That is awesome news! Definately hold off on the happy dance & keep taking care of it!

Are you still fighting PF or some other injury?

Well I can say that kids are not an issue for me as my youngest will be 18 in May and doesn't need special attention. My wife for reasons of my own wants to make me happy so I have no problem ensuring that my workouts are priority number one. Actually because of the physical changes that I have made she has decided to hit the gym, according to her she doesn't want to get left behind in the fitness area, bonus for me.  Mon, Wed, and Friday's are early bike session and late swim sessions. Tue, Thur, and Sunday are run days. Every Saturday is a rest day, hence Friday nights I can occasionally go out and not worry about the next day. Essentially I am very committed to my 20 week OLY program as it will culminate in my first OLY in April. Oh yeah, being mentally committed is always a challenge on some days, as it would be so easy to skip a workout. Hence a plan and the possible failure of any part due to plain laziness is not an option for me. That's why I love the actual vs planned chart, it keeps me motivated to not fail. I may re-adjust workouts but they will get done. So if you don't have a plan to follow, get one.

Did I just ramble on, yup I think so.

Ah to only have 2 kids.

Weekends 4 kids swimming lessons one is 9:30-10:00 3 other 9:30 -10:30. Little one is in daycare there. GF goes early puts little one in daycare and one other for a short while. I show up with rest and they go swimming and I get to work out for the hour. My gf gets 9-10 I get 9:30-:10:30. I usually will do some light weights or stationary bike. But tomorrow I am going to do swimming drills as I wasn't able to go to my lesson this week as I was watching the kids. Sundays are given that I run I always have so that is cool. With getting the new bike also and just starting all this tri stuff gf asks if I am going riding on Saturdays will see how it all goes but we manage. My gf is on maternity so she can go to the gym during the day. I try and get in there at 5:30 am -6:30 am before work but doesn't always work that way.

Whew - Good thing for early mornings!! Have a great swim tomorrow!

I'm with Hector on the weekend training question.  Since my youngest is 12, I can really go about anytime I want to.

I love following the actual plan and making use of the planned vs actual - it is motivating!

I think I'm actually finally past the PF, I fell off of my bike the last week of October

was going waaaaaay to fast coming into the parking lot after a ride, swerved to miss someone that wasn't paying attention and fell, my foot was still clipped in and I really twisted the top of my foot and strained the tendons pretty bad

I basically ignored the fact that I was injured for a couple of weeks and started running again and continued cycling - really did me in!

This has been the year of the dumb right foot - next year is going to be the year of two good feet!

ps

don't let my story scare anyone that is trying to decide whether or not to go clipless - my fall was waaaaay stupid on my part - it was after one of the famous taco rides.  I totally swear by clipless!

I'm glad you put the disclaimer in there . . . clipless is something I've gotta decide on too - right after I buy a bike that is LOL! So these famous taco rides, do they include some alcoholic beverages?

Swim Talk:

It seems like there are a few folks that are starting out on the swim and interested in learning more about technique.

I dug out my training material from my tri clinic and thought I would post a few tips based on people's level of interest.

I thought a good place to start might be by listing out some of the common freestyle errors -

  1. Dropping the hand and shoulders when the hand enters the water
  2. Sweeping the hand out too far away from the body during the recovery phase of the stroke
  3. Pushing water down in the first third of a stroke instead of pulling back and pushing water up int eh last third of the stroke
  4. Kicking hard with too lare of a motion
  5. The arm crossing over to the opposite side of the mdline of the body on the pull phase
  6. Lifting the head out of ht ewater to breath
  7. Not exhaling fully during the pull phase, or holidng your breath while your mouth is under the water.

These can give you a few things to think about when you are swimming.  If you haven't had the benefit of formal lessons or coaching, some of these things can be hard to self diagnose, but hopefully is some good food for thought.

Hopefully between Yanti and me, you have gotten some good ideas about some ways to pursue some coaching opportunities.

Let me know if you like the idea of having me post swimming tips as we progress through the months.

Yes, please!

I think your tips have already helped me, to be honest. I've been really focusing a lot on the various stages of my stroke, and just in the past few weeks I've gotten a little bit faster and I'm starting to feel a lot more confident. A couple days ago I swear I could even feel the "glide" that I always hear about, and it was awesome.

I understand most of the errors you mention (I especially need to watch out for doing a full pull all the way to the exit, and not crossing my body) but I still don't quite get the first one, about dropping the hand and shoulders on entry. Especially with the hand, what do you mean by dropping? (If you know of any videos in particular that show the hand position well, that would be so great. I've watched loads of videos but it's often hard to tell what the hands are doing on entry.)

Thanks, Beth!

I started a new thread but thought I would also throw it up in here for your advice also.

I bought a Specialized Elite Allez triple now would it be worth it to swap it out for a compact double? I don't know what the benefits would be or what. Just seems on the triple there is a lot of excess. Is a compact Double a better way to go? If so would the shifters have to be switched out or just the derailleur crankset and chain rings? I am very new to this and looking for some advice.

MENTAL TRAINING and WORKOUT JITTERS

Fielding - 2007-12-14 6:34 PM Hello, Lurkers! Yanti, I meant to mention this yesterday, but I'm intrigued by your tease about mental training. It's kind of embarrassing to admit, but for some reason I often get really nervous before workouts. I'm not sure why, although I suspect it's a confidence issue -- like I'm always afraid that this is the workout where I'll fall apart and somehow lose all the gains I've made. I don't know *why* that would make me nervous, because I'm fully aware that one (or two or three) bad workout is not the end of the world. And maybe that's not even why I'm nervous, maybe it's something else entirely. I've found that doing some deep breathing and focusing on the workout (or, alternatively, distracting myself with something else) helps. It's just so weird, because ordinarily I have lots of self-confidence and I rarely get nervous about stuff. In fact, my friends often tease me because I'm so level-headed and calm. I'd really like to find a way to shake these nerves!

Normal. Especially if you're training with more focus than before (which you are as evidenced by your willingness, enthusiasm, participation on this site). Even though you've done races before, you're now training in a new way and this is uncharted territory.

You said you get nervous before workouts; at what point during the workout does the nervousness go away? You said deep breathing helps, distraction helps ... but does it return as soon as you're not focusing on breathing or actively distracting yourself?

You might try some form of meditation before your workouts, and/or make sure you have a good, long, easy (hmm, meditative) warmup (which is always a good idea no matter what) where you focus on the rhythmic repetition of your limbs. Just some tips if you want them (pick 'n' choose, there are a gazillion ways to meditate/focus/whatever):

- Breathe slowly in and out through the nose. Let whatever you want drift through your mind -- just let it float by -- but try to keep always aware of the sensation right at the opening of your nostrils of air flowing in and then back out.

- Alternately, breathe slowly in however you like, but count, and then make your exhales one count longer. Remain aware of the counting.

- Alternately (or in combo w/above), breathe in however you like, breathe out through your mouth with an audible exhale, as if you were fogging a mirror. Breathe air into your nervousness and anyplace in your body you have tension; loosen it up and lift up and away and out through the breathing out. (Breathe peace or strength or whatever you need in; breathe anything you don't want out).

- You can also meditate on an affirmation, like, just one word (calm, peace, joy, power, etc.) or a phrase "I am calm/joyful/etc."

- Your meditation can also actively focus on the workout ... it's great, it's like getting to bike the course before you have to race it, so to speak. Think of where you will go or what you will do; mentally rehearse the workout with confidence; put yourself easily, calmly, and quickly through the workout so that you have 'mastered' it before you even begin.

- Set the meditation to music, or actively listen to music as meditation. Be creative--classical or soothing world music may work. Me, I would get calm and focused listening to Mortal Kombat. But I'm weird.

- Focus on your heartbeat and consciously lower your heart rate. It's fun to do this with a heart rate monitor (proof!) but it's maybe even better just to meditate on the feeling of your heart beating (don't take your pulse; sense your beat with your body and mind) and willing it to slow down. With practice, you'll be astonished to find you can do this voluntarily whether at rest or even training.

Most of this stuff is best practiced when not training, and once you are familiar and comfortable with it and feel it helps you. THEN try some of it DURING training  = dynamite. Or low-namite. I find it helpful simply to practice these things at any time of day. Morning works best for me since it sets up my day really well and tends to have a lasting effect. FANTASTIC if you can do this type of training so that on race day, you're calm, cool, collected and can regulate your adrenaline so you evenly and appropriately blow all your energy into the race, not into being nervous before.
