who's racing this weekend?!?!

Duathlon Saturday.... 5k/20m/5k ...

5k/20/5k -- Looks more like a warm-up for us Ironman folk.     Have a great Race.

I'm going to Bike Long on Saturday afternoon after my daughter's soccer game,  and get a Run in EARLY on Sunday, cause Sunday is Wifey's Day.   It's looking like 70 degrees and Sunny this weekend!!!

I'm not racing until June 3rd.  So I'm just hoping for a big, consistent block of SBR for all of May.

Jeff,

I'm fully planning on heading up the 19th with the group. Don't worry I know you all will need comic relief watching me go up the Bears and Cherries.

Hey Guys - FYI, RT73 along Cascade Pass is going to be closed this weekend and next for repairs. (I know, right?).  You'll want to hold off if you want to do the loop - last weekend was the last chance, unfortunately. Still lots of great riding up here though - Saranac Lake to Tupper Lake on RT3 is gorgeous, wide shoulders with smooth pavement, and brutally hilly.

Yea, I've got the construction maps for it.  We are still going up and doing a few different things for riding.  Really the only thing it cuts off is the monstrous downhill and we can work around that.

Thanks for the heads up though!

elrasc06 - 2012-05-10 4:50 PM I have a short du on Sunday that I'm doing just for fun.  Want to get a race in since I missed my last one because my foot.  Heading to Harriman on Saturday (and anyone's welcome to join me if they want!) to see these hills that everyone is talking about.  Now I'm petrified of this HIM next weekend!

I'll be heading out through the park Sat early AM, too!  Best of luck.  As DC mentioned, it is all about pacing!

who's racing this weekend?!?!

Duathlon Saturday.... 5k/20m/5k ...

No races for me till June, though I'll be racing vicariously through you guys.  I'm going to try for a century ride on Saturday though so we will see how that goes.

Good luck this weekend.

godspeed with that century... I have yet to hit that number but I am sure it is close in the training plans. Maybe one Saturday we can meet up with a few others and do 2 loops of  the Musselman course... halfway between us.

Thanks,  This will be my first attempt at this distance so it should be fun.  It's only supposed to be a 4 hour ride Saturday but it just worked out that I need to be in Syracuse on Saturday for a family function so I figured I would ride there and meet the family.  They can also be my SAG wagon incase something happens where I can get picked up.  Looks like it will be a good day so we will see.

Hello Cornick, my DH and I will be out on the LP course this Saturday as well.  We did one loop last weekend.  I tested the loop with my Cervelo and now want to do one loop with my road bike and then decide which bike I want to use.  I am leaning towards my road bike for comfort and for the extra 27T in the back.  My cervelo has a 53/39 crankset and 12/26T cassette.  I am not what I consider a strong rider so since I can't get down in aero very often on this course I am thinking of using the road bike.  There will be 2 or three of us meeting at the horseshow grounds around 10:00 to 10:15 - taking a left on River Road, hitting the course on Rt 86 in reverse and then heading back - climbing the bears into town and back to horse show grounds.  I will be in a super - hurts your eyes to look at - yellow vest and a red helmet - say hello if you see us   We live about 50 minutes away so any questions about the area - just ask and will help if we can.

oh and page 100?! Seriously...this LP group has a posting problem! lol

It was great weather for GI Half. I ran 3mi before, then the race and and 4+ after for a good 20+ mile day. My legs and body were dead on Sunday. I only did a 52mi bike, cut it short by 2hr but felt the rest was more important.

Holy smokes I just realized our LP training camp is in three weeks! Any tips on what's going on down there would be appreciated so I can let my coach know.

Our tri group has a mini duathlon tomorrow 4k, 15k, 4k.  FINALLY it may be sort of warm out and not raining.

Great to hear about everyone's training. I can't believe we have 9 weeks of training left although 2 to 3 will be taper so really only about 7. August is really going to feel strange. I imagine I will suffer from post IM depression but my lawn won't be up to my knees, I'll be a better husband, father, neighbor, etc. Ran 21 miles today, will swim 2.4 miles tomorrow and will ride a 100 on Sunday. It's a IM prep weekend - but over 3 days. No races for me until Quassy HIM on June 3rd. Still putting the hay in the barn.

Did our club duathlon this am.  Felt good!!  4k-15k-4k = 1:09:09.  1st run 19:12, bike + transitions 31:41, 2nd run 18:15.

I am a better runner than cyclist.  Some passed me on the bike but then I outran them   It is the strategy that has worked for me over the years.  I had a great run at Timberman last year.  Should serve me well at IMLP as there is never going to be a time when I will overdo it on the bike...LOL!!

Crap, forgot to add this exert from my training log...

Not far into the ride a chipmunk ran out and Matt ran over
him...he didn't move at all after...must have been a clean hit! Then probably 40-45 miles in
a pheasant flew out in front of Matt and Ray nearly hitting them. But did NOT get passed the car and got DECKED,
spun out of control, like a plane that was shot down, back in the direction of Matt and Ray as they had to swerve to miss him.
Feathers everywhere! It provided quite the laugh for a little while as Anthony and I had quite the view of the whole thing.

Had a scary moment today... Went out for my long ride this morning and decided to explore a new area that I had not ridden before. had a pretty good wind on the way back in and decided to try and push it pretty hard since I can't workout tomorrow(moving into my new place) and was cruising at about 27mph on the way back(it was really windy). wasn't paying full attention and then all of the sudden a pot hole the size and depth of a basketball was right in front of me. hit it dead on and flipped up in the air. surprisingly I am not too beat up. just a bunch of raspberries on my back and legs and a completely bent front rim. have a week to recover before my first half IM so hopefully I can find a new rim before then. hope everyone else is having a better training weekend!

You beat me by 6 miles   75 degrees and not a cloud in the sky here on the beautiful east end of Long Island.  I actually think all that sun had me feeling a little nauseous at one point toward the end of the ride.

Glad you're OK!  My buddy two years ago had a similar crash exactly a month out from LP.  And funny you mentioned that you'd never ridden there; today I was on a downhill descent that I'd done many times, and I noticed a hole in the road with some kind of utility metal cap in the middle.  The cap was a few inches down and if I'd hit it, I would have crashed likely as well.  My point being, whether riding somewhere totally new or your regular route - we most always remain vigilent of what's on the road in front of us.  Trucks are also always dropping debris onto the shoulders of the road, too.  Some dump truck dropped softball size rocks on the shoulder of one of my routes!

Again, glad you are OK.  From just a few years experience with friends and reading Ironman blogs and message boards, the Top Two Ironman Race derailments in training are Running Injuries and Bike Crashes.  So let's all be mindful of this!  And, ironically, being mindful of it gets more important the longer distances we train; yet, the longer distances we train and the higher the weekly volume we acrrue, the harder it is to remember these simple things because we get so damn fatigued.

If it's not one thing, it's another.

I seem to be in the middle of short-term injury hell recently.  Last year I built up to marathon distance for an October race, doing 3 x 20 mile runs in the meantime, and had no issues.  This winter we were blessed with barely any snowfall, so I was able to continue running (although I did give myself November through beginning of February as a bit of a rest period with reduced mileage).  Then from February through March I built up mileage again, doing a 30k in the beginning of March with no issues.  A few weeks later I rolled my ankle at the dog park, giving me a sprain on the inside of my right ankle.  That took a couple weeks to heal.  Then as soon as that gets better, I do a 17 miler and aggravate something on the lateral side of the same foot right behind the fifth metatarsal. Give that a couple weeks to heal to like 99%, and after testing out with a 4 miler and 6 miler and being no worse for wear, last weekend I go for a 12 miler and set myself back again.

/sigh

At least I've had the bike trainer - which is where I really need the work anyway.  But just to add insult to injury, today as I was getting in the car after leaving the pool, I mildly twist my left knee - foot stayed planted and lower leg stayed pointing one direction while the upper leg and torso twist to the side.

So much for the volume of training I was planning on having going into this thing.  At this point I'm just glad it's my first, with my goal only being to finish.  And I'm telling myself it's better to get these things out of the way now with 10 weeks left than to be dealing with these 3 weeks beforehand.  Truthfully the way things have gone, I'm a little scared to do any sort of long run over like 15 miles prior to the event - I'd rather deal with bonking due to insufficient volume than more setbacks due to injury.

I have had similar issues with my right foot for over a year now. I ran 3 marathons with incredible pain in my right foot and finally got an xray after my season was over. Told I had a break of the 5th metatarsal and put in a walking boot. A week later I went back as something in my foot was clicking. Another xray and they said my cuboid was also broken. They then put me on cruthces. 4 weeks later and no improvement so I got an MRI. MRI came back and they could find nothing wrong.

I resumed running this winter and same problem all over again. After running my marathons this last couple of weeks, I can barely walk on my right foot. I take tons of ibuprofin and aleve. I ice the hell out of it and by day 3 or 4 I can go out for a short run.

Once I'm done in Sept with my events I will be looking for a new doctore.

I am also looking to finish but am so afraid that they are going to pull me from the bike course.  I've got the swim and run down, but damn , gravity is not my friend when it comes to the biking.

My weekend training consisted of a Olympic tri on Saturday; first race of the season. Went alright...I am really tough on myself and always feel I could do better based on my training pace/effort, so I'm a little ticked about my times, but oh well.

On the swim (my strength) I could not get comfortable in my wetsuit. It felt very restrictive in my neck and shoulders. I have only worn it once before (last season). My shoulders began to feeling fatigued during the second half of the swim. I still was 5th overall/2nd female in the swim, but I felt the wetsuit slowed me down. Not sure if I should sell the thing and get fit for another suit. I have a Blue Seventy Helix which is supposedly one of the best rated. I was fit for it in a flume as well. The guy told me I would have to get used to it and it would stretch out a little...but I'm not sure. When I extend my neck, I feel like I am choking.  I have a "swimmers build," so for a female, broad shoulders. I probably should have gotten a men's size! Any suggestions from folks about wetsuits for those of us who are blessed with broad shoulders and long torsos? I read some reviews that the Xterra Vortex is good for this body type?

I recently found out that ibuprofin shouldn't be taken for stress fractures - it apparently inhibits the ability for the body to heal bone.

Someone on my dailymile friends list had an experience where she had incredible shooting pain in her leg - doctor kept telling her it was soft tissue, so she stayed on Motrin.  After a while she went to another doctor and found out it was a stress fracture from one marathon that she had reinjured during training for another marathon.  So, yeah - if you're dealing with something that isn't getting better, find a new doctor.

I'm still on the fence about visiting a doctor for my issue.  First off, the treatment is the same (stop running).  Second, it seems to be a coin flip as to whether a doctor leads one down the right path or not.  So as long as it does continue to get better on it's own - if I do visit a doctor I'd take their advice with a grain of salt, short of an MRI that can pin-point the problem.

Fortunately, the thing I need the most work on is the bike as well - and the bike doesn't seem to negatively affect my foot.  So I'm not totally up the creek - I just have a smaller paddle than I'd like

Best of luck in your quest!

Obviously I have no idea as to your training, but I'd say it's probably perfectly normal for any first timer (assuming you are one also) to be worried about finishing!

Check out the DeSoto wetsuits. They are a two piece suit that gives you a lot more flexibility in the neck and shoulders. A little bit of a different feel to swim in but you will quickly become used to the feeling. Watch the video on their website about taking the suit off and you won't worry about the time for removing a two piece suit. I've always had good luck with their customer service if you have any issues.

I raced in a 2 piece long sleeve for the first 3 years and I always had shoulder fatigue and pulling. It was probably for the most part in my head, but I would feel it especially in the first 200m of a race and it would freak me out. I got a sleeveless Xterra during one of their sales for like $130 and will never go back to sleeves, even on cold days. The freedom of arm movement is so much better...again, it is probably mostly mental, but it's what gets me through. Big sleeveless fan here.
