I was re-watching the latest James Bond movie, Skyfall, while I ran at lunch.  In one scene, M reads a Tennyson poem.  It was remarkable enough that I had to look it up and thought others here might enjoy as well:

Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

There are a lot of training parallels in there for those of us who are no longer in our 20's....

I did the Sufferfest, "The Wretched" for lunch 48:18. Eventhough we are using the speadsheet and have no challenge, the nosey part of me still wants to read what everyone is doing day to day, without hard work of looking up posts.

I agree, Jim.  Got done with my run and logged it on the spreadsheet...but no one to share with.  Still a break for a month or two will be good.  There are a lot who signed up for this group that did not participate in the Feb. challenge.  It would be nice to get them active in the group and engaged in dialog.

That is what I am saying, I feel that posting our workouts without keeping track keeps us engaged. Although I should have said the hard work out looking up everyone's workout logs.

I just want to know what you did today, and if something, cool, interesting or distressing happened when you did it.

As I do interesting workouts I think I will continue to share because I think there is value in seeing what others are doing.  I think not having the running total will keep the focus on training and any thoughts or questions that go along with it.  Bit cleaner and easier for those who aren't so concerned with where they rank in a monthly list of workouts.  It's all good in the end!

Let us know when you decide on the Martian HM.  My brother-in-law is coming into town that weekend and will likely run.  He's one of THOSE guys that won't have trained for crap for the last few months and will run a 7:40 pace.  I'm always jealous of how easy running is to him.

So my first workout since the marathon was Sunday.  My boyfriend and I rode our mountain bikes to the library to return a book.  He did hint that he might take me out on a few trails.  Note:  it's probably been 18-24 months since I've been on anything technical.

After 1 hour and 20 minutes, we were done.  It was a blast.  I was wimpier than I remember, I don't like to get hurt.  I walked more sections than I normally would.  But I really had fun.  I even managed to jump a small log.  I still remember how!

That's my fun and interesting workout for March Cool

So here is a new one - I have developed an allergy to something in one of the pools I swim in.  Don't know what, but after swimming this morning, I have been sneezing uncontrollably, running nose like crazy and crazy nasal congestion.  Had to leave work as I was no longer fit for duty.

This is the second time it has happened to me in the last two weeks in this pool. I have swam at this pool in between and didn't have such a reaction.  I've read about people having reactions to chlorinated pools, but the other two pools I have swam in haven't created these problems.  I'm pretty sure it is not the gym or showers itself, because I use them regularly and haven't had the issues.

Joe, I had a similar issue in the pool and you might be already doing this, but I was only able to resolve it by using a nose clip.  Hope you can figure it out.

First day getting up in the morning to workout since last Friday.  Felt good.  Started watching season 4 of the Wire.

I was having major issues with my Garmin HR strap.  Yesterday's run my heart was "beating" at 243 at one point, yeah right!  Alternatively I be running around MAF pace and it would say my HR was 65.  Anyway, I had been working with Garmin, replaced the battery, did the flipped battery reset procedure but was still having problems.  Called them yesterday and they said still under warranty and they're sending me new strap.  I was giddy like a school girl with the news!  Oh it the little things that make us happy!

First rest day today after running 44 miles over the last 6 days. Most miles have been very, even extremely, slow.

I feel like someone in a rehab program who finally committed himself after waking up in a gutter. I want to yell at all passersby "Don't let what happened to me happen to you!"

As of last Friday, I am 12.6 pounds heavier than my weight at last October's marathon and at least a minute slower pace for MAF. Shows what not exercising and following the famous Eat Like a Pig™ diet can do.

Long and slow run yesterday. 2kms into the run looked at the Garmin for HR and nothing there. Check - HR strap on, Yes - Check - HRM clipped on, NO. No HR for the whole run and it was not pretty. Last few weeks been struggling with my run form and fitness. Lost a little motivation as well. May need to have a few days off to get the MoJo back.

Over the last month I have been having to use my asthma inhaler post swim workouts as I feel a touch tight in my chest. Sometimes at night I am having to use it too. I'm not sure about using a nose clip though. I don't like things pinching my nose along with not having the ability to breath out my nose either underwater. But maybe I will have to give that a try.

The thing is during my workouts I feel fine. It is usually about an hour to two hours post swim and it doesn't happen every time. I guess I might need to ask them when they add more chlorine to the pool and see if the days they do that is the days I have problems. Once in a while I can tell that the chlorine content is higher.

Yesterday's workout started with having to change my rear tire as I rode outside the day before. After changing the rear tire, I somehow punctured the tube so I had to take it off again and put a new tube in. 30 minutes or so later I got on the trainer but then my speed sensor was not working correctly showing me doing 3-6MPH. I mess with that for another ten minutes trying to get it fixed. By that time I had to switch today's bike and yesterdays due to time constraints. Talk about being prepared for a 1:50 ride in the morning NOT.

So speaking of morning workouts, not sure if this has been discussed here in general or not but what does everyone do when preparing for their morning workouts? Eat something before doing the session? Drink a glass of water right before? Do you prepare your clothes the night before so you don't have to mess with it in the morning?

I tend to get my clothes ready the night before and depending on the workout for the morning I might eat something and drink something. At the beginning of each week I program my bike workouts into an Android app call A HIT interval. It is actually a decent little free program that helps guide me through my workouts.

Since I have a 7 month old and a sleepy wife, , I usually get all my clothes ready the night before in the spare room. I don't usually eat before I work out in the morning unless Im heading to the gym for strength training then I'll have a quick bowl of cereal. If I'm hitting the trainer or running, ill just do a BCAA drink and eat after if the workout is under an hour, if it's over I'll have a honey stinger waffle about half way through. I just can't wait until it warms up a bit more and the sun is up before 6. I really need to get outside!

Same issue - it creeps up on me about 2 hrs post workout and it is not consistent.  Been using saline rinse pre and post swim to cleanse and it is apparently not working.  Very strange after 4 years in the same pool.

melatonin? I also drink this tea called sweet dreams which helps me to get to sleep earlier.

Also to wake up quickly, jump in a super cold shower .

Really though I do have a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep at night and I find what I mentioned above to be the best thing for myself. I used to stay up until midnight or later but over the last couple of years I just started going to bed earlier and earlier each night. Now most nights I'm in bed around 8:30-900 and up about 4:30-5.

I would also reduce the caffeine intake during the day. The older you get, the more it seems to linger in the system. Oh, a glass or two of red wine at night also helps...

I am not a morning person so the only workout i get up early for is a swim, starting at 6. I never ate before any workouts but my following from my appiontment with a nutricianist she told me to always eat with in half an hour before any workouts, even the early swims.

You're in college! You're not supposted to get up before noon. An early morning swim should be 10:00 A.M. Wait until you graduate and have a job before you worry about 6:30 swimming.
