Looking forward to the swim.  IM Japan had a tiny start and end section, lot of bumping and grinding (not the good kind) going on.  I'm looking forward to the whole day.  I'm excited and I can't even train properly...yet.  I get to start biking again on Monday.

Thanks for the info on the natural foods... my next question comes up as... where do you put it?... especially the p&j and how do you pack/wrap it? ... im trying to figure out my nutrition plan ans my last experiences didnt go too well and dont want to make the same mistakes on my first IM... want to see the finish line, not the medical tent!!!
Plastic bag in your back pocket for the PB&J sandwich. This requires some sort of tri/bike shirt however. I love PB&J on my long rides. Protein, carbs, and some sugar baby!

WittyCityGirl - 2010-03-25 7:13 PM Also,  what nutrition do you carry with you on long training rides?  What counts as a 'long' ride for you?

I'm doing four hours this weekend and I'm on the fence about what to bring.  Bike Shop Guy said pack a baked potato for sure and a bagel with pb&j.  I honestly don't know what I'll want on race day, but I know caffeinated gels are in my future.

Long training ride 100+ miles I take;

1 bottle of Hammer Perpetuem in a 2 scoop mix in 24ozs
3 bottles of water
2 scoops of Hammer Perpetuem in a plastic zip bag
1 banana
6 Fig Newtons
2 Clif Shot blocks
2 Clif Shot Gu w/100mg caffeine

Really hot days two of those water bottles are Zefal Magnums 33oz.

Why only 6 fig newtons? I would bring the whole box if I could fit it in a cycling jersey.

Also what is an appropriate amount of calories that should be consumed per hour? I have heard it's around 300 that your body can effectively handle. I know if several people who use carbo pro and often wonder if they are taking in too many calories per hour for long distance races such as IM or even long training days. I saw someone mentioned 6 scoops of carbo pro, how many calories is that? Sounds like a lot.

I take in around 270-300 calories/hour depending on conditions

Scary thing is I had lots of Jersery Shore-like friends growing up on Long Island.

Okay, let's put a kibosh of the Jersey Shore talk and talk about more respectable subjects .

Does anyone have a 'planned' Finish Line Pose?  Blazeman roll, double fist-pump, cartwheel, etc...

I was thinking of grabbing a small banner from my wife that says "Happy 60th Birthday Mom!".  My mom turns 60 August 5th and will be up in LP with us.  Too cheesey?

bryancd - 2010-03-25 8:56 PM   If you don't use it daily or cut way back prior to a race, introducing it right before a race may give you a bit of a boost, but even that is iffy.

I'm okay with a placebo effect, I do *feel* a mental boost about 15-20 minutes after a 50 mg gel.  And I luuuuuv it!!! =)

Caffeine affects me pretty hard if I used to much so I don’t believe in the “placebo effect”.

So WITH me there are benefits and problems if even slightly over used.  My caffeine consumption is closely watched.  I drink 1 large cup of coffee before 9am.  I say 9am because its my rule none after.  I may drink a green tea in the afternoon.

People doing 5 or 6 scoops of CP in a bottle are making a super concentrated bottle to last them several hours.  So I take a swig of my nutrition bottle along with a few swigs of water from my water bottle to dilute it.  I pick up a new water bottle whenever I need it at the aid stations.  Pick up my bottle of CP for loop 2 at special needs.  I think Fred makes one that lasts him the entire ride.  If I biked a little faster I might be able to do that!  For the concentration I make it, I know I need about 1/3 of the CP bottle gone per hour, so I just sip on it taking a swig every 10-15 mins, and usually I'm pretty close.  On long unsupported rides I bring a zip lock bag of my CP so I can mix a second concentrated bottle while I'm out there (stopping at gas stations to buy water).   If I needed food for variety i took a couple bites of banana from an aid station.

I don't know how many calories exactly, I just try in the 60g CHO/hr range.  Between my CP mix & gels, I hit that easily.  Ideal scenario is to nail it, but IMO it's easier to fix it if you've underfueled than if you overfueled and are now puking.  I feel better on slightly less than I do slightly more.

Oh yeah, and I back off a ton in the last hour on the bike.  I have almost nothing the last 30 mins except for very small swigs of water if I feel like i need it.  I HATE a sloshy stomach for a run, I hate feeling full, etc.

All just what I do.

OK. Hair bumps. Fist pumps. I'm all caught up.

So, random question: why fig newton's? Are they like some sort of tri super food I don't know about (the way double stuffed Oreo's are a century ride super food?).

I'm all for trying them, just wondering if there was some deeper nutritional reason than just "Yummy."

ETA: 102! Wow, this is SO like TAN. Except cooler.

Before gu's and all the fancy sports drinks there were Fig Newtons.  Long kept secret and a lot cheaper.  They digest well and are easy to carry.  I have been using them since the early 80’s.  It was Bananas, Fig Newtons and Gator Aid.

TAN overrated, all talk.  LP thread is TRI WORLD!!!!!
