I was thinking about asking this in COJ, but I'm gonna ask TAN first... cuz... well... COJ can be a PITA sometimes.
Does anyone have a business on the side? If so... do you use it to write things off, and save yourself some money?
I have a valid business in PA that my buddy and I started in high school. We haven't done anything in years, and I just put zero's on all of the tax info every year. However, lately I've been trying to come up with a way that I could use it to my advantage... and show a loss, and write off some stuff.
Thoughts?
Well as many know I fly back and forth between Omaha and Chicago every week and I write off my flights. I also write off the principle on the mortgage on our condo in Chicago because the traveling and living is all for work. So if you legitimately have a business, you can write off things like trucks
(as my dad did when I was younger
) and computers and things like that, but you really do have to use them for work from time to time or it doesn't count. Since it's not your primary source of income it's also possible that you could only write off a percentage of your expenses. Like your new truck cost,
(I'm totally guessing
) $30,000, and you use it for work 10 percent of the time, you could write off $3,000 of that. Your best bet is to hire an accountant. He or she will save you lots of heartache and likely lots of moo-lah. And maybe a trip to the hooskow.
Good points.
I was trying to figure out a way to write off my flying lessons, and gas, and possibly a percentage of my Jeep. I could use a new computer too
I need to figure out how to show that my business is doing something... and losing money. I know there is a way to do it, big business create other businesses all the time to spread the money out, and save on taxes. Unfortunately they don't teach that "tricky" stuff in business school.
I thought about getting an accountant. The problem is that I like to............... "color outside the lines" so to speak sometimes... and accountants can be straight shooters. I don't want to be dishonest about it, but there's always a loop hole I just gotta find the right accountant. My buddy is an audit accountant in Pittsburgh, I should talk to him.
Do you have a business set up 2 goggles... or do you just write that off some way because it's for work?
I used to have a business ... `Dreibus Publishing' when I was a freelancer. I wrote off vacations because I'd end up writing a story for the LA Times or Minneapolis Star Trib or even a local rag about what I did on my vacation. But now I just show that my permanent residence is in Nebraska and my work residence is in Chicago.
My suggestion would to also NOT do anything illegal or potentially illegal because if you get audited, they will bend you over prison style. And not the good kind of prison style.
