What shoes are you using? Mine are getting up near 250 miles so I'm getting ready to start breaking in a new pair, same as what I'm currently using.

ran 5. complained to dh/coach that i feel like i work twice as hard to be at the back of the pack. mostly just whining. i'm done now. found out i have a new neighbor (a sex offender-yahoo) check my blog-itty-blog-blog.

artichokes sound good. might have to go the store now.

let's have an artichoke party ...

mmmmmm love artichokes....there is a place on the coast that makes warm artichoke bread! ITS TO DIE FOR!!!! mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

I'm in on this party! I grow my own.

Susie, get the smallest one - they get tougher and bitter with size (which is the same as age with artichokes). You can boil them, too, but wash the pot right away because it will get a green stain that will take some time to come out if you let the water cool in the pot! Even on stainless, but especially on teflon. You want to use only about 1/2 inch of water, don't cover too much or the heart will get mushy. Keep an eye on the water level so it doesn't dry out.

Enjoy,
Trish

Hi everyone.  I am going to try to attach a picture of my new bike - just one for now and just the bike.   If the weather is decent on Saturday, I will ask my wife to take a few more pics.

Well, that didn't work too well.  I tried to attach the pic, but it only allows up to 100kb for an attachment and the quality was pretty crappy.   For now, the photo is in my album:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/show-album.asp?albumid=8924&photoid=96222

Julie: what's the best way to attach pics?  i.e., what file format?

She's a beauty, Dan! I love the color.

Congratulations!
Trish

Just one more post ...

First off, I have to say, "I'm okay!"

But, I did my first endo last night on my way home from work. I was catching up with you all right before I left work, so I was sort of thinking about how everyone's doing and what I wanted to say to everyone. I wasn't really paying much attention to what was going on around me, but there was a guy going kind of slow so I started around him to the left. He sort of dodged around a manhole cover left, then right, so I assumed he was just dodging the manhole cover. I continued my pass on the left and surged by him just as I watch his front wheel turn into me! I hear a terrible crash right after I feel him hit my back wheel and, thinking he went flying, I grab my front break, but stand up a little too fast to put my foot down and go head over handlebars! I roll over, look back and see him calmly putting his kickstand down and walking over to pick up the pieces of my wheel reflector. I guess it was the reflector breaking that I heard, because he never went over. We reassured each other that everyone was all right, but my little flight test must have looked bad because he wasn't convinced. There was some other guy walking by us just laughing at us trying to convince each other someone must be hurt. I rode the rest of the way home laughing at myself and feeling totally relieved that THAT's out of the way at least. I need to get a bell. I only have a little sore spot on my ribs today, probably hit the handlebar on the way over them, so I really am okay.

I'm actually kind of relieved to have got this particular hurdle out of the way. I'm afraid I'm due for a nasty bike accident (because I spend so many hours in the saddle as you can see from my logs - NOT!). Anyway, I rode home laughing at myself and I fully intend to go bell shopping one day soon, since I can't seem to get my mouth open to say "Left" when I'm commuting.

I resize mine through HP Photosmart...and dump them in my album....Probably a better way!? when you load your pictures, you can tell them what size you want them downloaded at in your settings...or also can take pictures that are web size in you camera ...so you dont have to resize...did any of that make sense???

Yep.  Thanks for the options.

Goodness - how scary!

But don't be afraid to say "on your left" and then a friendly "hello" or something... I have also yelled (although at drivers) when I am not sure if they are aware of me.

hey - re: counting swimming laps with the Sport Count. I got one for Christmas, but I've noticed a lot of times it wasn't registering when I pushed on the button. Is there like some "technique" or something I'm not grasping? I started hitting it ever 100 because it wasn't registering, and even then sometimes I end up with a 5-minute time because it doesn't register that I hit it.

It took me awhile to get to where I pushed it hard enough for it to register a lap.  Also, it says at the end that you hold it for two seconds and then it will count one fake lap........... remove the fake lap and then show you your times/laps.  I have to hold mine longer than 2 seconds, but I finally did see it do the fake lap, remove the fake lap etc.............

Unfortunately, the thing doesn't have the best tactile feedback (the previous incarnation was better in this regard). I tend to count in my head, too, and then check every 10 lengths that both are in agreement. If I'm counting in my head anyway, why do I need the SportCount? Because I often lose concentration and count when I get to thinking about other things, especially if I start doing math in my head while I'm swimming. That's a guarantee that I lose count.

Speaking of swimming, I had a good, hard swim this morning. I had to wait for a lane for like 10-15 minutes, but then I rocked the pool. There were a few times that I started thinking too much about what I was doing and my stroke got poorer. I was wondering what it would be like to have my stroke analyzed.

Speaking of artichokes, many years ago my mom and I decided to try eating artichokes. Let's just say that I had a bad experience with something that was hiding inside. I've eaten artichoke hearts but I've never again tried eating a whole artichoke. In one of the BT challenges last year I was on Team Artichoke (bad school mascots was the theme). How ironic.

Those darn front brakes sure know how to reak havoc on a ride! glad you were ok Trish!

hence my user name....it is a very good idea (and I sometimes am not the best at!??) but tri to always give the person you are approaching whether, biker, hiker....ON YOUR LEFT...or ON YOUR RIGHT if they seem to be hugging the left side of the trail. My husband is constantly saying....on your left, on your left, on your left if they have thier back to us or or stopped on the trail and not paying attention...

and finally be very careful of those grates in the gutter areas of the roads. I happened to stick my front tire into one last year and it stopped me dead in my tracks (tire was just the right size to fit!!!...TOTALLY flipping me over the handlebars...was not a pretty site and I was really lucky my leg did not break...it was stuck in my pedal and I was all twisted in the bike by the time it was all over! got lots of cars stopping...making u turns to come back and a few cyclists...and of course it was at an intersection where there were lots of cars to see me and my NOT SO graceful flip! I was a black and blue mess for weeks! and needless to say, I do not get near them now!!!

I have not had problems with mine...not sure...maybe practice doing it out of the pool and make sure it is timing right!? I love mine and can actually see it well in the water..and my eye site is not the best. Have you tried switching hands you have it on?!? maybe you will click it better from the other hand!?

I wear Asic Gels....and on occasion my Newtons love both! totally different feels in both shoes...what do you wear?

Running and my feet haven't really gotten along very well:

I started out with Asics Gel Evolution-II, high motion control, and then still needed to add custom orthotics because of ankle pain. Went through two pairs of those. When I then went for new shoes I found that compared to other shoes the newer Gel Evolutions plus my orthotics felt like too much motion control. So, I tried a whole bunch of different shoes and ended up with New Balance 768's. They are still motion control but not extreme motion control. To continue my foot saga, I started getting pain in the ball of my right foot and numb toes right after I switched over fully to the new shoes. When it didn't go away I went back to my foot and ankle doctor who said that the new shoes had irritated the nerve in the sole of my right foot. He predicted that if I stayed with them that the irritation would decrease and the problems would go away. He was right. He made the general recommendation that if you find a shoe brand that's working well for you that you should stay within that brand since they tend to make the whole line with the same shape foot last. When you change brands you risk adding in new problems. So, it looks ike I'll be staying in New Balance for a while.

Wow, that was a very long winded answer to a straight forward question! My bad!
