Redknight - 2011-05-23 7:45 AM Way to quiet in here for a Monday morning.
Where are all you east coast peeps And where's the banter from the west. Do we have to wait until fatty slim gets back to have a decent conversation?ribbing . How's the training going with everyone? What's your favorite song to run/bike/swim with ( do you use headphones while swimming?). What is everyone's A race this year?
I think I know Fatty's..

Last week was not a good training week for me.  Life got in the way and even though it was a recovery week, my volume was too low.  Then to top it all off, I ended up with a cold.  I'm feeling better today, but will be traveling at the end of this week.  Arggggg!!  School is out in a few days, so that should help--more rest AND more training!!!

I have my first tri on June 25th in Warsaw, IN.  This season is just a "getting my feet wet" season.  No "A" race planned.  I would like to do an Olympic distance in September--that's the goal anyway.

Favorite song to run to:  Pump It, by the Black Eyed Peas.

This was my first tri season too, I did a couple of mini-sprints first (400m,15k,4k) and this was great for getting some idea of pacing and transitions; my A race was the Hervey Bay Oly 1/5 which was GREAT!!!

I'm going to do more sprints and Oly's next season and I'm thinking about attempting a HIM sometime next year, we'll see...

this race is like no other in many more ways than the distance.  it seems like everyone has a 10k $ bike.  there's probably 10 of us not running zipps.

Well dang I was planing on doing my Ironman with my road bike with clip on aero bars

no way jose!  you rock your bike.  screw what the others are doing.  this is about you!!!  and don't worry, you'll pass a bunch of those 10k bikes!!!

LOL - you sound like me...:-)  I have no "excuses", but I just basically fell off the triathlon bandwagon for a while...way too busy with school projects that have me sitting in front of the computer all day, and my free time - I just want to sleep. Got a nasty cold bug that bit me TWICE - I got it then I passed it on to Roy (I TOLD him stay away from me!!), then it mutated, and I got it back.  I would have trained through it, but I'm not a fan of doing that, especially when you have so much gunk coming out of your nose. THEN - I had a coughing fit for the last few days - that's a no no for training. FINALLY after two weeks battling this d@mn thing, I'm back, and started off with a nice good 20 minutes easy run.  Will do that for the rest of the week to ease back into it.  I don't have any races planned (except for 5K run in a few weeks...that's doable), until end of Summer, so I should be good to go now.  Seems like I lost my motivation for training...but slowly coming back to it.

"A" races - probably will be the Rock n Roll Half Mary.

I don't have much of "A" races for triathlons - haven't really done my race schedule yet. I do want to try out of state triathlons though - Blue Water Triathlon, Kokopelli Triathlon. So we'll see how it goes.

I do want to try to shoot for a HIM next year, and I don't want to do half-a$$ed. :-)  It all depends on the cards on my table.

Hope everyone is doing good!!   The weather has been AWFUL here - sunny/warm yes - but VERY windy. Me no likey!

Music - what music? I have no need for music...although, it seems like I do want to try to do while running. Biking - no no.  Swimming - I'll have to try my friend's Finis Swim MP3 because the way it works is not hearing through your "ears", but through your ear bones, which mine is functioning perfectly fine.

I'll leave that to your imagination!

Just found out the course was actually 2.48km so I feel a bit better about my time, still slow compared to most of theswimmers though...

Here's a few pics I found on the Oceanswims site:

Need some advice about training while sick.  I rarely get sick so I feel pretty crappy even though it is probably something relatively minor.  I woke up this morning with a sore throat, low grade fever, achey muscles, and just generally feel like crap.  I am supposed to do my long run today but I can't imagine going out today.  How long do you take off or recommend taking off whenb you feel this way?

I don't think there is any set formula... listen to your body for sure. No training with fevers for sure. And anything below the neck is a no-no too. Rest, drink water, and take it day by day. But feel better FAST!!!!

Good morning,

I've been trying to post my Rev3 race report for a week now.  Every time I hit save and make public it goes into locked-up thinking mode and then I loose it all.  I'll try one more time and then I quit.

I think Lance is innocent.......period.

 ***************REAL NUTRITION QUESTION*********************

I've found a good balance of liquids, gels and solids that work well for me on the bike.  But it is getting hot and humid down south and my water needs are increasing.  The problem is I can't carry all this stuff.  I've heard about people making their liquid nutrition double concentrated and then filling their other bottles with water.  My concern is that will turn my stomach.  Do any of you have any experience with this?

I have experience with this and it is the way I roll on the bike.  I mixed unflavored Sustained Energy, gels and a couple of salt sticks with X amount of water.  I do this for HIMs and even did for IM last year.  I fuel every 15' starting on 15' and ending with 15' left to go until the run.  For HIM's that means roughly 12oz of concentrate or 1oz per feeding. The key is making sure you ingest enough water with each fueling.  For me that is 2 sips of water to every sip of the concentrate.  I also drink water throughout the 15' before the next feeding. I have a podium quest front mount so one side is plain H20 and the other side is the concentrate.  When I hit an aid station all I do is fill water.  My goal is 30g CHO per hour, based on my 101lbs.  My goal is 20oz of H20 per hour.

My secret formula includes esperesso and vanilla gel because when the solution gets warm it tastes like sweetened coffee instead of gritty barf.

I plan to experiment a little with the concentration level to get even more CHOs in me.  To date, I don't eat solids, but I might try a 1/2 PBJ early in the bike/run training as well.  I did it last year with some success.

As a result of the above, I really carry very little on me.

PS. I have a similar problem with BT right now.  What browser do you use? do you have compatability view on?  Still struggling to fixe the issue.

Thanks for this post, Suzy.  Getting my nutrition down for my HIM is scaring the crap out of me.  I've been doing a lot of online research, practice, and still feel completely clueless.

that^^^   and don't stress it.  you're not going to lose much, if anything taking a day or two off.  heck even a week off.  but if you go out sick and get worse then you might really screw yourself up.

take it easy.  and get yourself better.  and then don't go trying to make up missed workouts.

And my daughter is amazing!!!!!!! She rocked her first 5K, coming in around 32:23. Awesome! She was the first girl to finish from her school (out of 3rd to 5th graders -- she's in 3rd grade).  I harped and harped on her to hold back early on and she was perfect. She flew up the first hill like crazy, the felt it a bit at the top. We took 2-3 short walk breaks, but ran up all of the hills. This girl oozes love and affection and she was saying the nicest things out there -- I made it a point to remember them but now I can't. Doesn't matter, the message was always the same (how lucky she is to have me, how even Seattle is smaller than her love for me, etc.). Around 2.7 miles we were at 28:00 and she said, "I really want to finish by 30 minutes!" I told her that wasn't happening. At 2.9 miles I told her, "Now is the time to leave it all out here. If you have anything in you, let it all out." ZOOOM! She was off and I was not staying with her, ha!! She raced it all the way in to the finish and was just spent at the end. GOOD GIRL!!

I am the super-duper proud mama today!!!

this is so AWESOME!!!!!

FAMILY STATUS: Married for 22 years to Gary (gslye here on bt), We have two daughters, 23 and 21years old, and a new baby grandson (almost 3 months)! I travel with Gary, around the Pacific Northwest in our RV, for his job as a power system electrician.

CURRENT TRAINING: Mostly running and haven't really been sticking with a training plan. I had a stress fracture last year at the end of February while in early training for IMCDA and have struggled to get back into a steady training routine since then. My plan is to get back to swimming and biking a couple of times a week, while continuing run training for the races I'm already signed up for. Hopefully, I'll be able to get in a local sprint or oly sometime toward the end of Summer.

2010  RACES: Snow Joke Half Marathon (Seeley Lake, MT) in February, Columbia Power Marathon (Hood River, OR) and Tri-Cities Marathon (Richland, WA) on back to back weekends in October, and Outer Banks Marathon (NC) in November.

2011 RACES:  Redding Marathon in January, Antelope Island Buffalo Run 25k in March. Registered for: Cda Marathon 5/31, ET 51k (Rachel, Nevada) 8/13, Kauai Marathon 9/4

I look forward to getting to know those of you that I don't already, and I'm so happy to be back. This is an awesome group and I've missed you all! Here's a pic of my new little grandson:

so good to see you back.... GRANNY!   ha!

Good morning!

Love the photos, David! What a beautiful place to swim... I'm jealous.

Very cool, Steve!

Agree with Kyla and John on the training while sick. Sometimes with a head cold I actually feel better if I run, but you really do have to listen to your own body. The most important thing is getting well.
