Chris and Joe, great job on your big ride and great race, respectively.  Chris, it's got to feel good to have ridden the race course in it's entirety this far ahead of the race.  Now you know you have the distance and know what you're in for!

I had the 2 mile swim race this morning, it went alright.  I tried not to go too hard, the whole time I was thinking to myself, "I've got to do 4 miles tomorrow, what the heck was I thinking!"  I finished in 56 minutes, first place overall male*!

*I was the only male, and a 16 year old girl beat me by 4 minutes...

No rest... did a 45min very slow run/walk 7k distance. It all worked fine, but the knee was painful.

Ernesto, have a great race tomorrow!

JoePetto - 2012-06-23 12:56 PM

Sprint went well enough today.  Water was 80+ degrees and made for a labored swim.  Bike was solid at 21.6 mph on a somewhat hilly course.  5K run at 7:06 pace,  Finished 10/79 in my AG.  Open water issues did me in today.

I realized two things though - one, I'm still not fully recovered from my HIM and second, I don't really like sprint distances.  I'd rather go long.

Joe, that sounds like a good race to me! How did you do in your transitions. I have a neighbor couple where both are very good triathletes, but he prefers sprints and she longer races. He half jokingly says that the key to sprints is transitions, which he just kills.

The transitions actually went well in retrospect - T1 3 in AG and T2 4 in AG.  The thing that disappoints me is I panicked a bit in swim.  Warm water freaks me out and makes me feel claustrophobic.  Lots of of heavy contact and I went out too fast. Had a point where I actually thought about a DNF, but sucked it up and finished a lousy 40/79 in the AG.

It is all relative - this was my first tri ever in 2010.  Two year later, I took 2+ mins of a .5 mile swim, took my bike speed from 18.3 to 21.6 and my run from 8:34 to 7:06.  Can't lose sight of the big picture.  Time to start focusing in on my marathon - with a little rest in between for good measure.

Joe, good job with your sprint tri and Chris with your long ride today!

Ernesto, best of luck tomorrow and we will keep track of you via bib #487 on Ironman Live!

On my side I'm leaving for Taiwan on a week long business trip tomorrow morning and it takes almost 2 days to get there. I also don't think I will be able to get in any decent workouts, so Jim the challenge is all you now Smile

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Rest today. I had to pick up my 17yo at Michigan State last night from a camp at 9:00 P.M 1.5 hour drive to my parents. Dropped her off at Detroit Metro Airport at 4:00 A.M this morning for Flight to Guatemala (looks like she will pass Gabe in the airport), then 3.5 hour drive home. I am wiped out! I did get a full body massage yesterday and worked out a little hamsting niggle I've been feeling.

@Joe - Congratulations on your sprint performance

@Chris - Nice Job on the long ride yesterday

@Andy - Congratulations on you swim as well!

I completed my first Tri of the year this morning, the Bigfoot Triathlon in Lake Geneva, Wi. Last year, this was my first tri ever. Unofficially, I PR'd by 10 minutes today. Overall time 1:51:58. What's most satisfying for me is that I did the swim 5 minutes faster than last year and the bike 1.4 mph faster at the exact same heart rate compared to last year. I post a race report when I get the official results.

Ernesto - That's a great time for your 70.3.  I messed up on the time difference and didn't think to check earlier so I just went onto IronmanLive and saw your finishing time.

Barry - congrats on the PR.  That's a great improvement, especially over a sprint distance.  That shows how much you've worked over the last year.

We've had some ridiculous weather over the last week or so.  At the moment we have high winds and heavy rain with lots of severe weather warnings.  The news says something like a month's worth of rain in a day.  It's been messing with my training.  On Thursday I got completely soaked on my run and on Friday I had to do my ride on the turbo (I managed 2hr 40min before my butt hurt too much).  And now I appear to have pulled something in my back :-(  I've booked a physio appointment for Thursday, which is my first day off work.  Until then I'm just going to have to take it a bit easy to try to avoid making it worse (work is bad enough - the kit we have to carry really pulls on the lower back).  So now I'm just in survival mode to try to ensure I don't wreck myself before the big event, which is now only 3 weeks away Surprised

Ernesto and Barry - congratulations on your PRs!!!

Barry, Lake Geneva is a great place, we went there few times and had a great time. Not racing, just admiring the huge and insanely expensive houses on the lakeshore. As far as the triathlon there, in the past it had a reputation of being badly organised, hopefully they changed the director this year. Well, looks like you definately found your bike and got through the transitions well. Good job!

Finished my 4 mile swim, first place overall! 1:59:41 was my official time, I was hoping for two hours and made it just barely. That was kind of fun, I think it would be even more fun if there was an end destination or somewhere to swim to. This race was. 1/8th mile swim rope and 16 laps around it. Got a little boring after a while, but allowed me to just concentrate on my form, high elbows and good hip rotation. I kept telling myself if I kept good form I wouldn't have to work as hard.

Thanks Mark. There are actually two triathlons in Lake Geneva. The one you are referencing does have a bad reputation. Some of the folks in my wave were talking about the same thing. That one is later in the year and rumor has it that there is a new director this year. The one i did is run by Ram Racing and its pretty well run from this novice's point of view.

Thanks guys! I had a good time, the race is kind of a hippie Ironman, it has a very relaxed vibe to it and there's no WTC nazis out there since it's a privately owned race that has a partnership with Ironman. The swim was my fastest ever for the distance, the bike is HILLY and windy, and the run has some hard climbs, not to mention the heat. All in all, it hurt so good! I'm very happy with the way it went, I will definitely come back to do this 23 year old classic. I highly recommend it too! Andy and Barry, congratulations on your races!

Great Race Andy. As I said in my comment on your race report, you should change your name to Swimminggonzo.

Same to you Barry. That is remarkable improvement. You should be very proud of yourself.

I ran 13.1 miles today in the 82 degree noontime heat in honor of Ernesto. (and to attempt to acclimate myself to running in heat.) Good job Ernesto. Are 70.3's becoming your easy races?

One new thing. My wife went to hear Scott Jurek (the ultra distance runner) speak earlier this week and texted me if I wanted to ask him a question. I said "ask him how he can run so many miles and not get constantly injured". He answered 1) eat within ten minutes of finishing a run and 2) take a real ice bath as soon as you can. A real ice bath is one with a large amount of ice.

So I did both today. First, after picking up my daughter (I was running while she was at an activity) we both went to a place that rhymes with Wickdonalds, so I got some calories in. Then when I got home I put an entire mixing bowl of ice in the bathtub and filled it up about 4 inches with cold water. It hurts to get in, but you get used to it. Given the slant of the tub, it was enough to cover my ankles and calves. Knees were out of the water, but glutes and hams still were in the water (quads were out). Took about 10 minutes for the ice to completely melt. Stayed in about 20 minutes. Very doable and feels good. Next time more water.
