cornick - 2012-05-17 1:40 PM Not to take away from the TTT but I'm stoked! Going to placid this weekend to ride the course again.  I'm hoping to get my camera mounted to the bike before I head up and record the road, course.  We'll see if that happens though.

You should be an expert with all the trips up to LP.  Let us know how it goes, and how the road conditions are looking.

5K swim one week out from IM?  My first thought is that recovery time from a 5K swim race is not so long that it would affect Lake Placid performance and that, while a bit late, makes for a good last long swim.  The race is on a Saturday with a scheduled 2 hour bike / 30 minute run making for a nice swim-bike-run.

I'm leaning towards registering but curious what you all think, is it too close to race day?

What swim?  Is it wetsuit legal?  Is it in a calm lake or choppy ocean or bay?

If it's a wetsuit lake swim, I'd do it.  If it's non-wetsuit lake, I'd have to think about it.  If it's in any body of water where they may be chop or challenging conditions, I would absolutely skip it.

Good luck to Triple TTT'ers and anyone else from the LP board who's racing.  I'll be doing a Quassy pre-ride and BRICK Run on Sunday.

FATIGUE SUCKS!!  Just wanted to say that.   I'm definitely on the bottom of a fatigue cycle; can't wait for it to pass.  I've been taking 5-hour energy which  helps; it's basically just a concentrated dose of Vitamin B.

I'd do it ~ sounds like fun!  Swimming relaxes me though.  I'd love to get a long swim like that in close to LP.  Where is this swim!?!  As long as it is not in super challenging waters ~ I say go for it

Let us know what you decide!

I'm doing Harryman, for some reason I also thought that DC was doing it too.  I don't think I've ever been as nervous for a HIM as I have this one; heard so many horror stories!

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!

Boo & SEADOCHA, here is a little advice for TTT racers shared in another thread by Andrew Dollar, who has quite a bit of experience racing well at TTT:

ADollar79 - 2012-05-13 1:42 PM

...IMO, here are the keys.  First, respect it.  Don't try to kill it.  Treat it like a challenge.  You will emerge victorious...it will just suck along the way. Second, respect it.  The course (unless it changed) is brutal.

Race #1:  It's too short to get too caught up in racing. Just prime the legs.

Race #2:  If you are going to overdo it, this will be the race.  You will feel great in the morning and amped up.  But you body will hate you 8 hours later when you aren't amped up but need it to respond.  Hold back just a bit especially on the hills and the run.

Race #3.  Bike-swim-run.  Your legs will feel beat up to start the bike.  IIRC, this course was easier.  Putting on a wetsuit in T1 is hard.  Have someone zip you up.  Your legs might cramp when you hit the water.  Prepare for it.  The run sucks.  Every minute of it.  You body will NOT want to run

Race #4:  Half--You know the course by now.  Use the swim as an easy warmup.  You probably have ridden all the roads and can anticipate the climbs.  You will likely start struggling on the climbs.  Take them easy and enjoy the descents and flats.  Run--will make you want to cry.  And you have to do it twice.  You will know EVERY rock on the fire road.

Tips:  Unless you are trying to kill it and be on the podium, enjoy the weekend.  It is really one of the coolest events around.  You will get to know everyone so make friends.

The biggest key is fueling yourself and recovering.  Expect the first race on Saturday to take you ~2:30 give or take.  That means you are done around 10:00 am.  What can you put in your body that is agreeable and allow you to race again at 3:00.

Use the stream that leads to the lake as an ice bath.  And I mean immediately.  Cross the finish line, grab food and eat in the lake/stream.  This will help keep the swelling down.

Eat like a pig on Saturday night.  Your glycogen is non-existent at this point and you need to top off your reserves for the next day.  Even consider a large breakfast.  I think I broke all the rules by this point.

Sunday is just a survival fest.  Don't expect to be fast.  If you need to walk the hills, walk the hills.  The body has taken a pounding.

Post race--SERIOUS recovery.  Given the terrain you might roll an ankle or have inflammation in odd areas.  Address these immediately and don't let them linger for a few weeks.

Cannot wait to read all about it!!!!

I think I am finally getting a handle on my summer routine - one thing new is that I have joined masters swim a couple of times per week so that has boosted my yards per session a bit. I usually swim in the 3200 ~ 4000 yard range; the first two masters practices have been right at 5000 yards. It is a good, friendly group and best of all the pool is outside.

Today was just an hour of strength; Tomorrow is a 1:10 OWS followed by a 4 hour rolling terrain bike - no big climbing yet, but I am itching to get back in the mountains. Sunday is a 1 hour run with 3x1 mile "quick paced" intervals. Maybe in the mountains next week...

What do the other non-racers have going on this weekend?

Don't stress the race.  Just remember to control the things that within your control.  I often use the Serenity poem/prayer to get me through some of the tougher races and moments.

You know it is going to be a long, tough day...but it is a great LP training day, too!  I plan to be out there on the course to support the racers.  I plan to be at the top of the Lake Welch climb, so I'll look to give some good positive vibes your way!!

Pace, nutrition, smart racing!!  You are going to come out of this race in great conditioning for LP...Go get em'!!

This year is a bit of a write off in terms of lots of quality training.....    I`ll get round but i may take my camera and enjoy the scenery more than last year (which is no bad thing really).   The growlers of 46ers will still taste as good.

What do the other non-racers have going on this weekend?

Friday 1:15 run (already swam continous 3500 yards in the pool today.  First time ever at that distance)

Saturday 4+ hour bike ride (will be biking to my bike shop where I bought the new tri bike to take a look at the computer, it doesn't want to pair with the wireless sensor)  I guess that is an advantage and disadvantage of picking a bike shop far away.  Takes time out of the day to go there and get it fixed, but if you ride it then it works as a training day.  It should be close to 100 miles round trip.  Then 45 transition run.

Sunday 1:15 Z1 100RPM bike, Then 1:45 run

Good luck to all the racers out there, and for the rest training keep it going.

I'm with you on this one.  It's funny this came up.  My "Ironman Coordinator" (The Wife) asked me what races I was planing on next year.  I said the same thing to her about trying to make it through LP first.

It's funny how our "Ironman Coordinators" think.  While training for Louiville in 2010 my wife told me that it would be my one and only IM.  Then I got fat and lazy and was told, in no uncertain terms, to register for Lake Placid.  She's already scheduled the next one, I'm (supposedly) doing Wisconsin in 2014.  It would have been 2013 but we can't afford IM every year.  All that said, I too, am taking this one race at a time.

Well the race report is posted now.  I'm going to have to believe you Dream Chaser, if LP is as tough as that race, then there's no way I will survive it.  I think that was quite literally the worst possible bike course you could possibly make.
