Ok, I teach high school Physical Education at an Alternative School, it drives me crazy that the best time in the mile for my class is 10:15.  When you hear people talk about how out of shape kids are today, IT'S TRUE!  More and more Physical Ed is being taking away from schools and it's catching up with us.  Five different classes have run the mile and only four students have gotten below 8:30!

Ok I'm off the soap box, but when my 8 and 10 year old can run faster than my high school students it drives me nuts!

bzgl40 - 2013-02-14 4:43 AM It is a lovely vacation morning here.  Slept in...until 5AM.  Gonna get a workout in and then head to Phoenix to pick up a friend who will be petsitting for us.  Then I get to turn around and head to the airport not that many hours later to fly out ourselves.  My only exercise for the next 11 days after today will be if I am running away from a lion.

Have a great vacation!  You may have mentioned it, but I can't recall....where are you going?  Hope you don't have to run from any mountain lions, but if you do, I suspect your training will help

I am going to Africa (Tazina) on Safari.  No way for work to get a hold of me there.

So awesome! Have a great time Kim!

Sounds like it's time to start a run club.  It would be great for the kids and you.

I was a Girls on the Run coach and found it very rewarding.

brigby1 - 2013-02-13 11:41 PMHad some extra time, so was going to get in some more easy riding on the bike. Found that the tension bolt on the trainer had been stripped off. I went and took a nap instead.

I never get tired of heartwarming tales in which dedicated athletes employ lateral thinking to overcome adversity. Way to go, Ben!

Laughing We did have IM night at Masters and opened up the main set with 300 yds of fly, and a total of 525 in the set. The 100 yds fly specific drills and kicking in warm-up wasn't really hard though.

Late in the set I had to resort to pulls due to leg cramping, and somehow pulled out a 34/35 sec first 50 in one of the 100's? Several seconds faster than any I've seen time on before. Usually my speed is not affected by a buoy, it just takes a little less to do the same thing. Lost my grip on the buoy at that turn and finished the 100 in 1:22 though, whoops.

Are they doing any type of sports at all? Are there still school teams? Most every athlete with the teams I was on would have been faster even though these were team sports.

Well Kim, you know the old saying: You don't have to be faster than the lion, you just have to be able to outrun the people you are with. So with all of your recent training I am sure you will be just fine! Hope you are able to get a little rest on the plane and enjoy the vacation - you have certainly earned it this past week.

X2. You should be good, what with the training and all. Get some much deserved rest

Alternative programs don't have sports teams, we are for the ones who don't make it in regular schools for a variety of reasons, mostly discipline.  I may have been lamenting and the athletes are the ones who got lower that 8 minute per mile.  Unfortunelty we don't have any after school programs.  Maybe time to start one.

Keri, just read your review. Interesting. I have the same issue as Ken with the Zoots. They don't stay up on my hips and cut into the arch of my foot. I took a pair of scissors to the foot portion and opened them up a bit. I don't think their sizing works for taller/longer inseam folks. I'm not really doing anything long enough to warrant recovery tights right now, but hope to get back to needing them again soon.

Ken's legs are not long 32" inseam so I don't think it's a leg length issue as much as an issue with the tights themselves.

I have the regular ones with very long legs 34" inseam and have no issues at all.

OK, Anyone have any input on HIM race gear?  I used DeSoto tri shorts the last two years, but I've lost a bunch of weight, and they're old.  My local store Tri Lab has a nice kit, but for the life of me, they can't figure out how to stock any sizes but XS apparently.

Probably go back to the DeSotos, but anyone have any other options they like?

I'd kinda like to race in a jersey with logos etc., sick of all black.

Thanks, I was just over there looking at trisuits.... I always felt like I'd look like 12 pounds of rice in a 5 pound bag.  But now that I might be able to actually wear one.  Hmm, thinking.  You go white or black?

I'm wearing the previous year's 2-piece Forza Riviera in my avatar photo, over the white long sleeve top.

They also have another one for non-wetsuit swims I was looking at:

I went white.  It's supposedly not see-through when it gets wet and having tried it on, I think that may be true (but I didn't actually wet it).

To all of you braving the weather up North, especially in the Northeast!  It was 80 here in Naples and I have a major sunburn from being at the beach four hours on Saturday.

My workouts this weekend were just ok, nothing to get excited about, Saturday was 2 hours on Paddleboard.  Sunday, was a really slow and easy run.  Can't wait till March first to start officially tri-training again (been doing Crossfit for four months).  Today workout is listed below:

1000 meter row
45 pound Thruster, 50 reps
30 pull-ups

30 Minutes Swim, lots of kicks and pulls!

Enjoy your day!

Heading down your way Friday to Jacksonville.

Enjoy our sunshine state!

We r suppose to get some ran hopefully we won't have 5K on Saturday morning.

As long as Sunday is nice. Doing the 26.2 Run with Donna. First marathon attempt so hoping it goes well.

All packed and ready to go to Jacksonville. Meeting my daughter and we'll be attempting our first marathon. Her friend is hoping to qualify for Boston again. Should be a fun weekend.  The bike arrived down there today so I can catch a few easy road miles to keep the streak going. Still a lot of snow here and icing in the morning from the run off.

Maybe because I cycle a lot and am around cycling kits these days...I actually prefer the kits that have logos. Most of the bike shops around here have kits that you can buy, usually cycling or tri kits. A couple of our stores have a deal where you can buy the kits for $100 and that gives you membership to their "club" for a year. My husband is on a local store's team and it gives us 10-20% off all purchases and services. It is also nice to be a part of a group when we go to races. maybe see if you local stores can hook you up with a kit?

Good luck.  Remember to start at a pace at about stupid slow.  Build up into your pace and don't get caught up in the excitement.  Body Glide EVERYWHERE.  I always find brand new spots during marathons for some reason.  You'd think you would find them all during training but nope...

Arend, how well does that float pad float?  If you had two pairs of shorts in your hand (one with the float pad and one without) and held them 2 feet under water, do you think you would feel the difference as in the one with the float pad would be pulling upwards to the surface?  Would you be able to easily tell if you didn't know which hand was holding the one with the float pad?

I used a DeSoto Liftfoil last year. It's kind of half trisuit, half swim skin. It has the pad, but I honestly couldn't tell when swimming. Would have to be a test more like what you just said. It's not exactly a pull buoy they put down there. With that said, I did notice that the pad was there when running, but wouldn't say it was bothersome. Just known. Think I prefer a thinner pad though, meaning not as wide (vs thickness).

The quality of DeSoto seems to be very good from that. They're a good brand to look at if the cut works for you. I'll be looking at something different because the cut doesn't quite match up. I'm kind of an odd fit though, larger than normal hip to waist difference on top of the tall & sorta slim. Things tend to compress  on my legs rather tight while actually being a bit loose in the abdominal area. Then needing a slim cut in general tends to mean it's shorter in height too.

It is very easy for me to get on my soap box too....and I could go on for pages....the school that I work at has cut recess down to  12 minutes per grade level of outside play...factor in getting into line, using the restroom etc and they maybe get 8 minutes of outdoor time. They get PE once per week for an hour because we share the PE teacher with another school...anyways, I will stop, LOL.

Thanks, its sad but in Florida, they can do PE in thier homerooms (Elementary School) how pathetic is that!

Enjoy the trip!  Run well on Sunday! Enjoy it! Take lots of pics. Don't stress about your time enjoy the journey, go out slow and pick it up late, don't try to set a PR, time doesn't matter. This course is flat you will have to force yourself to slow down!  Get plenty of rest the day before and drink lots of water. You probably will not be able to sleep the night before so get a good nights sleep on Friday.  Don't do anything different than you did during your training, you will do this.  I agree with lots of body glide!!!!! I'm sure you heard this before but easy to forget with all excitement.  Smile and enjoy! I'm cheering you on!!!!!

Are you doing the Jacksonville Marathon? It's very flat and fast, good race to qualify for Boston on.  My bro ran it a few years ago not many spectators, but its fast.  In fact my dad and I were able to drive our car around and see him alot.  Was fun. Great scenery very old Florida, good course.

Good luck to your daughters friend and your daughter!

Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN

I had a good swim this morning, 4800 meters.  We did a set of 20 x 50 on :50 with about half of it being kick - there was a lot of touch and go to that one!

It's been pretty frustrating trying to run in town here this week, the sidewalks are in awful shape with rutty ice everywhere.  We are supposed to get a couple of days of warmer weather that will hopefully clear them up.

I hope everyone has a good day.
