Wow - tempting. I spent my formative cycling years riding some of the roads used for IM Lousiville. Much more attractive from a weather perspective now that its in October.

Bought the new bike today, Rocky Mountain Element 930. Its an "entry level" full suspension bike but its light years ahead of my old mountain bike. I am looking forward to the 29inch wheels, disc brakes and especially the back saving full suspension.

Congratulations Dave on the new toy, looks really nice.  Let us know your first impressions once you take it out

August is off to a slow start for me, we were out of town for the weekend then I pulled something in my back lifting on Monday, so I took yesterday off. Hoping to get back to the gym this afternoon and hopefully a trainer ride tonight.

I started this season with the goal of competing in my first HIM over Labor Day weekend, but I've come to the realization that I really prefer short-course racing. Eventually I'll probably try a HIM, but for now I'm going to focus on sprint and Oly distances and try to get as fast as I can. The HIM I was going to do also has an Oly so I think that will end up being my A race this season.

Catching up on the last few days. I started my 14 week HIM training plan and the coach started me out on 2-A-Days on the first day. Kind of makes me thankful that I've been ramping up the training for the last few months. I've been healthy for the last few months and I hope to stay that way through the training.

I headed out to Sado island on Saturday for a self-inflicted training camp. I will do a full distance triathlon on Sado on Sept 6 and getting to the island for training is a fantastic experience. I guess there is nowhere in Japan where you can ride 190 km and see so few cars and so few traffic signals (and so many tunnels). I did this same type of training last year in conjunction with an open water swim event that they have. Last year I did the 2km swim and this year, I decided to see whether I could deal with the 5km. It was a wonderful experience - there were less than 60 people swimming the 5km and the staffing support for the swim was superb. Anyway, here is what I accomplished during my 4 days on the island.

Sat: 7 hours of traveling - car, ferry to the island and drove to the hotel. Got out for a 37 minute run
Sun: 5km open water swim race (2:13) and then 2:03 on the bike in the afternoon
Mon: 1 lap around the island - 190km (7:04) followed by a 10km run (1:01)
Tues: 115km (4:23) for the top half of the island

Ideally, I wanted to get in a run off the bike on Tues and a long run on Wed, but the heat had taken its toll (90+ and sunny every day) and I decided best to hold off on the long run until the temps cool down a little on the weekend.

Glad to see a bunch of us are still working!

Yesterday I squeezed in a trainer ride at lunch. This morning 60' on the bike again completing 3 sets of 5x1' intervals at 125% of FTP with 1' recoveries. 8 minutes between sets (Trainerroad Bashful).

46min on the new bike. Its really good, unfortunately I left the front wheel in the parking lot - its gone. I have posted a lost and found ad and put up posters in the parking lot and am hoping for the best. So frustrated and disappointed - my own stupid fault

Bummer about losing the new wheel Dave, but at least it was only the wheel.

Adding a run for Thurs - very slow 5k including walk breaks every km (34 minutes). My legs felt heavy until the last km.

Stuff happens. Still, losing a wheel sounds better than some of the stories I've read, i.e., people who leave their $10k tri-bike on the top of the car, drive into a parking garage and trash both the bike and the car.

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
