The weeks before the race, I was using the hand cleaners like crazy, breaking out in a sweat if anyone even coughed around me...last thing i wanted was to get sick and not be able to do the race. Expert 1148 Santa Fe, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Yesterday was the last swimming pool swim before the IM. Today was the last two hr ride. Tomorrow one hour ride then pack the bike. Packed nutrition tonight. Tomorrow I'll have to get busy and pack the rest of the stuff. Leaving Tuesday morning, arriving mid afternoon. Just reitterating some of us are planning to meet at 8:00am on the boardwalk (beach side of the boardwalk hotel), either before or after a swim. It's the same place the Gatoraide bag storage was in 'o8. I plan to swim on Wed, Thurs, and Friday mornings. (helps me get over my ocean water hee-bee-jee-bees.)
Training for an IM sure helps get your mileage up! this month's run numbers reflect no running for the last three weeks due to injured ankle. Which will be better by Satruday! |

For me: Swim: Tri Jersey & Tri Shorts on under full length wetsuit What about those neoprene headcaps? Necessary or even recommended? Bike: Definitely wearing socks on the bike...maybe 2 pair? Maybe throw in some chem heater packs too. My feet get COOOLD at around 60 degs. Definitely wearing gloves. Maybe wearing arm warmer on the bike? Running: Change socks in T2 and remove tri jersey for dry long sleave tech shirt. Windbreaker left in Run SN bag as needed. That's about it. |

Running: Change socks in T2 and remove tri jersey for dry long sleave tech shirt. Windbreaker left in Run SN bag as needed. That's about it. Water temp effects if you need a neoprene cap. If it is under 62 I'd wear one but water should be around 72 so not necessary. Wearing socks to swim start to keep my feet warm and maybe leave them at the start. Perhaps have a jacket to put on or put wetsuit on early and wear that to keep warm. 2 pairs of socks make my feet colder as they are tighter in my bike shoes. I'd add toe covers instead....as I can put them on my shoes and leave them on prior to the race so just slip my feet in my shoes. I'm leaning toward no socks as I pee on the bike and wet socks aren't so nice. I'm bringing leg and knee warmers that would consider if high is 65 or lower. I have arm warmers that I plan on using for sure. I have bike vest or ziplock bag to put down my tri top again depends on high and either I'm okay with throwing either away. I look at real feel to plan clothing choices. Run: I'll put on socks. I'll have light gloves in both my T2 and run SN bag. I have something like arm warmers that I'll have one in T2 and SN. I also have light weight breathable jacket for SN and a throw away vest. |

If so that is cool, he is my favorite Pro, watching him swim Alcatraz is what inspired me to get into the sport in the first place and in the 4 races that I did where he was also racing I did well, so it brings me good luck. I am super worried as I DNF in my first attempt in the horrific course in SG Utah. |

New user 14 Milwaukee WI | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Worried sick after I had horrific failure in my first Ironman attempt when I did Ironman St. George UT. I am a Sea Level athlete, and all the factors, were horrific, the allitude effects, chip seal pavement, freezing 50 degree water, nowhere to train for the gigantic hill climbs there during WI wintery hell. I missed time cut off mile 64 and was DNFed. I did train very hard and I was totally devastated by the whole thing. I feel into a depression over it. I am working my way out of it by I would say that that I am not 100%, as they say that when a boxer is savagely beaten and knocked out they are never the same a again, they go down much easier each time after that, and that is how I feel. I had an Achillis tendon injury 6 weeks before the race also which was a factor also. I have very good stamia, strength and toughness, but not the greatest of speed as I am a football player and wrestler by sport and all muscle. i weighed 180 in SG and gained 12 pounds in my depression and can't see to drop the weight now. Here is the question I have: is there any way to estimate my abilities based on my times in my last 3 IM 70.3 races, 100 mile bike rides and marathon time to see if I can do this because if I do it and fail again, it will mess me up further. I was looking at some other peoples times and it seemed like they were like double their 70.3 time plus 2 hours, and in my case that would put me with one hours of leeway and that is cutting it way too close for comfort. My times are: IM 70.3 Brazil 7:05:00 in 2010 IM 70.3 Racine 7:16:00 in 2010 Marine Corps marathon 4:50 in 2009 IM 70.3 Steelhead 6:50:00 in 2009 I did 4 100 mile rides in the last 2.5 months all about 6:15:00 +/- 10 minutes My swim times in the 500 yard are consistently 11:30, I can not go any faster. SWAM 5K 2009 Big Shoulders Race 2:05:00 5K 2008 Big Shoulders Race 2:04:00 I am fast enough to comfortably make the cut off times in this race or should I just pull out right now? I do not know what to do? Please comment, because I do not have that much knowledge on this. Thank you. Matt |

Mostly sunny and pleasant Similar to Syracuse 70.3 temps and I froze my butt off that day. If that forecast holds true then I will go with... Bike: Bike jersey with arm warmers or a long sleeve Under Armour shirt under bike jersey. Run: Tri jersey and long sleeve Under Armour shirt in SN bag or wear the l/s UA under my tri jersey. Gameday decision there. The long sleeve shirts eliminate the worry about sunscreen. Just put a bit on my neck, ear and nose and away I go. |

You are having too many doubts...get them out of your head NOW. YOU CAN AND YOU WILL FINISH THIS RACE!!You can't let one DNF depress you and bring you down! Hey at least you made it to the race and at least you tried...that's more than most people! Think of the people sick or with disabilities that would love to be able to just start the race let alone finish! What doesn't kill you makes you stronger ....right?? Use what happened in St. George in a positive way. You have what it takes to finish. The bike course is nice and flat. Don't worry about your speed or anyone else for that matter. Make sure you race YOUR race...no one else's. If you finish in 10 hours or 17 hours you are still an Ironman. Just be smart, watch your times and race YOUR race. You WILL be an Ironman November 6, 2010. I will be there as a volunteer and will look for you to cheer you on. I am working the finish line from 9-midnight! Don't let me down! Oh and make sure you have a game plan in your mind in case things get tough. Make your mind over take your body when your body says it wants to quit. I know you will do this so....no more doubts...YOU CAN AND YOU WILL!!! |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Matt, IMFL is much much faster course than SG...I think SG is probably the slowest IM course in the US based on this year's results and FL is one of the fastest. Don't let doubts creepy in. Much of Ironman on race day is mental. Work on some positive mantras to keep you going. Know you did the work and have confidence in your training. Know there will be rough spots on the race and they will be temporary and you will get through them. You sound like you are just about my pace swimming maybe a little faster. From your times for 100 mile rides and swims you will make the cut offs. Stay positive, meet up with the BT gang at the swims any morning starting Wed at 8am at Boardwalk Beach hotels back deck area. My family is doing finish line catching for 11-14 hour finishers and will stay until I finish. Sounds like there will be BTers at the finish line no matter when you finish. |

Its sounds like a really really tough course. THere are som IM time calculators out there but I'm not sure how accurate they are. They were not accurate for me. You are the only one who can make this decision but heres some things to think about 1-By all accounts IMSG is a VERY tough course and much more challenging than IMFL I'd love to be able to say absolutely you can finish but I'm not one to sugar coat things. Do I think you can probably do it ?...yes......might you not finish? ......yes. Will it be challenging?.....yep. Anything can happen to anyone on IM day. Matt You WILL do just fine!.... very first attempt at a half ironman, I turned in my chip since I knew there was no way i was going to make the bike cutoff. Of course, getting off your bike 4 times to push it up the hills wasn't doing me any benefits for making the cutoff. My 2nd attempt at a Half Ironman was 7:20 minutes. My IMFL was 15:26 So I do not think you need to think about taking your half ironman time plus 2 hours. Just execute your plan that you have been training. I am no speed demon and admire those that can do the swim in 1:00, bike at 20+ mph, and run 7-8 minute miles. Not in my lifetime will I ever be that fast. YOU CAN DO IT! AND WILL!
