I purchased a late in the season deal and only rode it a few times. Getting it ready today should consist of pretty much putting air in the tires. You probably see where this is going....today I learned that there is more than one tire valve stem. I've only dealt with Schrader valves up to this point in my life. Now I have a Presta valve. My 3 minute "add air to your tire" became an event of trying to find a way to get air into a Presta stem. I now have a hand pump that supports both, but that took a trip to Walmart while my middle daughter waited patiently. Now I need....a presta pressure guage to go with my pump. A presta adapter for my air compressor would be nice too. I also realized that I need to learn more about my new toy. Funny enough, I know more about my daughter's Walmart bike because I needed to get it working properly once I got it home. They aren't really put together with much attention to detail.

Be careful with the walmart pumps. They'll work with Presta but often won't pump up to the PSI needed for road bike tires. My advice would be to buy a decent floor pump with a gauge built in. You should be able to pick one up for $40-60. And most will do both Presta and Schraeder. Get it from an LBS though. As with the hand pumps, the cheaper walmart floor pumps often won't pump up past 80psi.

Truth.  And the gauges suck even when they do work.  Though gauge calibration is always going to be an issue (even on pro teams).

I bought a Blackburn Air Tower HP (MSRP: $80) on clearance for $50, and that thing is easily worth the money either way, if you can stomach the price.  It takes one or two pumps to top off tires, inflates an empty tube to full in ten pumps, and grabs and holds on to stems easily.  I was testing a suspect tire, so I took it all the way to the max pressure (160psi, yikes) in probably 20 pumps.

Also, once a season, take a pump apart and lube it.  I just use some spray silicone (the same stuff you use for car door jambs during winter) to keep the seals lubricated.

Originally posted by Qua17 Hi BDAS - it's been a while. Thanks to everyone for the kind words about my job. I don't want to dwell on it - but my lack of MOJO this year has had a lot to do with a really tough job. I'm a little worried to not have anything lined up - but finding a new gig where I can enjoy going to work is going to leave me better off. So if you are the praying kind - please pray that I find a gig where I actually want to go to work in the morning. I'm going to take today as an omen! It was 70 degrees and sunny - the perfect day for a bike ride, so I rode 20 miles. It was a beautiful ride. The roads were terrible - with potholes and sand everywhere - but it was so nice to be out on a bike without being weighed down by 4 layers of cold weather gear. I rode out at a pretty conservative pace but really pushed it on the way back (I was still 5 miles an hour slower than Alex). It felt good to be back on the bike and outside doing the deal. I came home to a two hearted ale and was enjoying that until I decided to step on the scale. I'm up 4 pounds from last week and only one pair of my shorts fit. Time to get to work. Do we have a challenge for the week? I'm gonna challenge myself to log each morsel of food/drink that I eat. I have to start somewhere and I figure that's the place. I'm also going to post my goals for the week of anyone wants to join me. If I fall short, I drink lite beer at the Twins game I''m going to next Saturday. Goals: 1) Log Food Everyday 2) Do 10 minutes of PT exercises 3) Workout everyday Monday-Friday 4) Post to BDAS everyday.

I'm right there with you my friend.  This week will hopefully see some resolution to my own personal job situation (one way or the other), but I'm struggling so much and it's just reaching its peak.  This weekend was a complete mess; went to a wedding this weekend and everyone else seems to be doing so damn well, with babies and dogs and good jobs, and all I feel is anger at life right now.

I'm venting, but it's just so damn rough right now.

On a lighter, floral note:  anyone wants some hops rhizomes?  I have five Cascade Hops plants, going into their third year, and last year they went a bit crazy on rhizomes.  I probably have five or eight I can mail out.

Making beer with your own hops is a fair amount of work, but it can be done.  More than anything, they are pretty and smell nice - kinda like, well, hops . . . They are a hardy, relatively aggressive climbing vine and take a lot of water.  The vines die off every year, but they grow back from the same stem.  The don't seed either, so you don't have to worry about them showing up in random flower beds.  Also, hardy to zone 4, so even the Canadians shouldn't have problems.

You can put them in planters, but they need to be big planters (probably a half barrel size) and only one per pot.  Straight line vertical growth is probably up to 20', but you could probably get away with 8' or 10' (3m) if you allowed for horizontal expansion as well.

The rhizomes are spourting now, so I need to either cull them this week or ship them out.  I read The Lorax too many times as a kid, so I hate killing plants, so I'd prefer to give them new homes.  If you wants some, and chose to paypal a couple of bucks to cover shipping, that would be great too

WHEW! Florida 70.3 was a blast. I couldn't believe how much fun I had. It went perfect. Pacing, nutrition, and everything else was spot on. I could have went harder but that is how I guess you are supposed to feel. This distance is so much more fun than when I do sprints and olympics. Official time was 6:51:44. My goal was 7 hours and I came in under that so that's a bonus. I have a sprint May 9th with my son and plan on doing nothing but swim until it comes. My IM training will start after that race. I have a few oly and sprint races peppered throughout the year that lead up to IMFL.

Gonna be a great tri season this year!

Dave , Charles, hope your job situation improves asap, here in Europe getting a good job is a big issue, specially now with the crisis. I have quite a few close friends in your situation.

Scott, I'm IMPRESSED with your determination, I did a HM in Feb with brochitis and swore never to do it again -but I fiished; I guess having your family around was a big help. Thanks for the detailed report.

Alex, CONGRATS! I watched live (streaming) the finishing line and it was extremely exciting - I may have seen you, if we have had our shirts no doubt I could have identified you. One can read in the face of each finisher all the effort and training behing, and the sense of happiness and achievement. Looking forward to do a HIM!

Question for the experts here:
is there a lot of difference among conventional bike helmets (the one I have), a catlike type helmet, and an aero helmet (i.e. Giro)? Is it worth the price? Thanks!!

Hell yes, it's worth it! An aero helmet on the aerobars is the best cost/benefit in terms of drag reduction. Next to position and wheels helmet is the next biggest factor is getting more aero. I wouldn't use it all the time, but during races and when training on the aerobars, definitely.

There is a noticeable difference in speed/power when you have an aero helmet. I notice it almost as much as the difference from riding upright to going down on the aerobars.

Today was testing day and once again I demolished my power outputs from the last test (4 weeks ago).

Critical power at all durations are now thus:

5 second: 1365w (up from 1295w)

30 second: 897w (up from 849w)

1min: 591w (up from 574w)

5min: 357w (up from 351w)

10min: 319w (up from 302w)

20min: 312w (up from 298w)

FTP: 296w (up from 283w)

I'm really hoping to hit 310watt FTP for the Amateur World Championship Qualifier at the end of May. If come in the top %25 I'll be off to Denmark in September.

Alan is definitely right on it being best return on your money but a better question would be is it worth it to you? For me, I am  MOP racing sprints and Olys, so at the end of the day I am still MOP. If you are closing in on the elusive podium than by all means go for it! Of course if you have the money burnin' a hole in your pocket than I say go for it!

Congratulations!!!! That is so awesome!!! I am so happy for you! Wow. I am just impressed with how you had everything dialed in just right for you - well done - and that means you really practiced what you needed to do/eat/drink. So key.

3,500 yards in the pool yesterday.

Today I finally did a walk/run without pain - for the first time since October!. My PT made me promise to only do 100 yard runs and walk a few minutes between each. No more than a 1/2 mile of run and no more than 1.5-2.0 total distance; so that's what I did. I am to only do this every other day to slowly ease the knee back into it, do my PT and roll as much as I remember to...well, more than that... Strangely my 920 said it transfered the data but it doesn't show up on any of my sites; but it's still in the "history" section in my watch. I've tried hooking it up to the computer to sync it was well as through WiFi. Never had that happen before.
I've got a Corporate Cup Challenge 5k on May 14th so maybe I'll be able to run the whole thing...we shall see! Taking it slow.

Hey! It hit the low 70's today!! Believe it or not we still have snow in the backyard - but it will be short lived! I saw so many folks out there on their bikes today. Yea!

Hi BDAS - Just a quick check in... I have four goals this week and I worked towards all of them today. I counted calories, went for a walk, did my PT exercises, and have now checked in...

The only thing than would make this day better is if I were a Sox fan... 72 degrees for their season opener and they rocked the Nats! What do you think about that John? Jenn? Not too shabby!

Good day today! Last long run of marathon training- 20 miles. I felt good until about 16. It felt super hot- I would have guess 85 but turns out it was like 74. Guess I'm not acclimated! It was beating sun the whole time, though. (No leaves out for shade!) I'm glad I got to run in hot conditions, since it might be hot on race day.
And home opener for the Pirates, and they beat Detroit. Hope they can get ahead of the Cubs in the division soon, lol.

So with a little luck last night at the casino, I made a few bucks..

Decided to invest in a pair of Hoka's.

Haven't had any miles on them yet, but the slight jog around the parking lot made it apparent how comfortable these things are..and the energy return per stride is incredible, you can really feel the shoe rocket you forward every step.

Went with the cliftons, and I can't wait to get some miles on them.

Check-in I wasn't feeling like working out today, but both of my daughters dragged me to the YMCA again. 800 yards in the pool and a fun time later I'm glad I went. My youngest was swimming laps with me...and kicking my butt.

Bike Pump Yeah, I wasn't under the mistaken impression that I got a quality pump from Walmart...I was just happy I found one somewhere at that time on a Sunday. It saved the bike ride with my daughter. I would have had a very disappointed kid. I'm going to buy a good pump now. The Walmart pump can hang out on my bike just in case.

Things seem to be starting to come together for some...

Alex kicked butt in his race. (Good Job!)

Jenn Is back on her feet - literally.

Dave is getting glimpses of his mojo back.

Christina is dialing in her training right before her race.

Alan is almost generating enough wattage to power Canada.

Scott is doing marathons with bronchitis

Everyone's stories are my favorite reason to keep coming back here. Whether it's a successful race story or a someone battling through adversity, I always seem to be able to find someone else feeling or doing the same as me. It's nice to know you aren't alone.

Aerobars are ready to be installed, helmet....no doubt will get it now. Wheels? Still thinking about it....

Christina - Great work! Pushing yourself through a tough training run will make your race seem like a victory lap. You've done the work - now you get to enjoy the taper!

Thanks for putting a beat down on Detroit. After what they did to Cleveland's pitching, they needed a little pay back!
