Tracy the boys got some quads.... Why did he put a shirt on from bike to run?  Was it because of his number?

He said it helped with the heat.  The black of his tri suit absorbed too much sun on the run and the shirt helped wick and block the sun on his shoulders.  I told him he justs needs to run faster so he won't be out in the sun so long. (JJ)  He did have a question for you directly Steve.  From last year's Savageman photos you made the comment, "Tell quadzilla to fix his aero position."  So quadzilla told me to ask you if he is better now. Tongue out

Doug, that was Over the Mountain in Kings Mountain NC, just west of Charolette.

tahrens - 2009-06-03 11:03 AM I think you call what I did running.  I started out thinking I would just do a nice easy run and by the end I was spent.  We'll chalk this one up to opressive weather conditions.  You know you look bad during a run when you pass deer grazing on the side of the road and they don't even move!!!

Speaking of my run this morning, I don't recommend Burts Bee's Suntan lotion.  I'm a big fan of their lip balmb so I tried the sunscreen.  It is very thick and didn't absorb very well.  I looked like I had been patted down with talc powder.  Then with high humidity and sweating I had white liquid dripping off of me.  Pretty scary looking.

BTW - I HATE DENTAL INSURANCE!!   I've spent the whole moring arguing with them.  I'M MOVING TO CANADA!!!

X2 on the Dental insurance Sucks Rant!!! Might as well not have it, since nothing is covered but 2 cleanings a year.  Goodness gracious one should need a root canal or worse an implant.  I could have purchased a custom Guru Chrono with what I paid for dental treatments in 2008! DANG.  Make room for one more, Trevor???

btw, Tracy, I love the new Neutrogena Ultra Sport 70 Sunscreen, they have it in lotion or spray on and it is pretty light, non-greasy and even on my face it doesn't cause a break out.  not strongly scented either.  I think the spray on will be good for tris because then my hands won't get all greasy.

This morning at my outdoor pool, there was thunder and lightning and we all had to get out and wait....made the water feel much warmer after a 15 minute break!

Jeremy,  I object to almost all of the photos, you are wearing far too much clothing!!!!  Just joking.  I also vote for the avatar, the bike and the saluting photo.  Why were you standing so much in the bike photos?  Do you get more power that way - it never works well for me on the flats.  You weren't climbing were you - I don't remember.

Thanks

I was standing on the bike as this was a friend of mine shooting, so there was barely time for him to get from the swim to the bike out area, so the biking pics are just out of T1.  We're gonna be doing some training photo's so I can get the bike pic that I want (profile in aero).

The salute pic was purely accidental as I didn't know he was there (transition setup) and as I turned and saw him, I through out that off hand salute, he caught it.

Thanks Tracy. I may consider that one next year.

BTW: I looked at your albums. The naked tri calender reminded me aof a story. Bear with me.

In 1992 I was between jobs and decided to get back into bike racing. I went down to Florida to the Walden School of Racing near Orlando. This was early March. On the last night of the week they held a nude bike race. Shoes and helmets for the men, women are just topless. If you wanted to watch you had to pay a fee. Riding was free. I decided to race as it was my birthday and I figured wearing my birday suit was appropriate.

It gets a little cold at night even down there. The tactics are very different. There is a lot of positioning to be near soebody you want to get a look at as you go under one of the lights. Long story a little shorter, since I didn't see anyone I wanted to see naked, I went as fast as I could. It felt very weird! I had goose bumps everywhere. But I did win! Thankfully there were no pics that I am aware of. 17 years later I will not recreate that.

Man, what strange memories this Tri-thing is bringing up!

ok ok... that explains it.  salute like that for real and you'd be pushing for a "little" while.

okay, so quick question, what type of pump do people carry during races?  the used one that came with the now broken wedge pack is busted into 2 pieces and i have no idea how it happened...never had to use it but now that my first race of the year is on Sunday, i was needing to get a new one.  i saw this cool little one by Innovations that you just thread the CO2 cartridge onto.  it's nice and small and will fit easily into my new cow print pack   Has anyone used this type? the guys at my LBS are saying it gets super cold and could freeze your fingers if you forget to hold it with gloves?

Tracy to answer Doug....

He looks WAY better than last year!!! Way better.  I would say he has probably improved a ton as well?  Next up.... Matching Tri-bikes for you guys...

Jeremy... I dig the pictures, and your buddy is REALLY good.  I would say if you are going for that side shot, or aero shot... I hate to tell you... (maybe because I notice) but you gotta slap some RACE WHEELS on that bike.  Just borrow someone's for a couple hours!!! I think you would be amazed at how much more intense that would make those pictures...  Also I think there is a camera setting (that I either used one time, or photoshop) but you can make the foreground (you on your bike) extremely clear, and the background really fuzzy and unclear like you are FLYING (which you always are), but that would look pretty sweet from a triathlete's/photographer's perspective....

Kim, I just put a CO2 valve and two cartridges in my seat back (along with a spare tube, patch kit, a mini tool kit, and a set of tire levers).  I use one of the Topeka bags (medium, I think)

Two weeks ago I used this set-up 4 times in a day!  I wouldn't say it freezes your fingers but its does get very cold.  A glove is a good idea.  W/ the glove you can also check the inside of the tire for debris anyways.  I was surprised how slow the air comes out.  Not snails pace but it doesn't just blast out.  I recommend buying an extra or two and changing a tire with one in the comfort of your home.    That said...the last twenty miles (shortest distance back to my truck) with no CO2 cans on me was NOT a good feeling.  I may invest in frame pump for longer training rides.

Way too much weight on your bike... That is not a shot... I am just saying... Total overkill... A pump an CO2, etc... If you end up needing EVERYTHING that you think you should, it probably wasn't your day... The most I ever carry is 2 tubes and 3 CO2.... I have never had to used ALL of it in one shot, but that would suck if I ran out...

Steve great advice about the borrowing the race wheels for the shoot!  I didn't think of that, thank you.

for CO2, I also use the same setup for the X-Lab.  It will get very cold, enough to burn your fingers.  So if you are racing and don't have gloves, use your shirt to protect your fingers.  Otherwise consider carrying a handkerchief (I don't wear gloves unless it's cold).  AND - try out the inflator at the bike shop when you buy it.  the first time I used mine I didn't think it was working, that it didn't fit my tube stem.  But the gaskets inside are so tight that the first use is pretty tough to get it put in place.

If you do run out it can sometimes be a long walk back to the car...  Unless you can find some one to throw you and the bike in the bed of the pickup...

Has not been my day, but it could have been worse. I did my morning run nice and slow. It hurt my lungs more than I would have liked. I was planning on running this evening with this tri-coach that holds groups runs out of the local tri-store for free. Packed everything, but when I got to work I realized I left my running shoes at home.

Went home an decided I would do a road ride. Got out and felt pretty good. Thought I was going at a good clip and the hills did not hurt too bad. However the sky got ominous so I only did about 12 miles. Forgot to start my Garmin at the beginning so I lost some of the tracking data. When I was done it said I was slower than I thought I was. It had to be the traffic and lights I had to deal with.

Oh well, at least I did not crash, get a flat or getcaught in the rain. Now if I could stop my nose from running!!! AAAAUGGGGGHHH!!! (Please don't rain in Raleigh on saturday morning!)

For my race on Saturday the weather is calling for rain, with a low of 1 and a high of 10!Frown At least its not snow!  The swim is in a pool so the starts are staggered and I don't start racing till 3:10pm.  Does anyone have any suggestions about how I should eat differently since it is later in the day and suggestions of things I shouldnt eat?

Also, for the little challenge going on, how many laps are people who swim in a 25m pool swimming?

I changed  my own front and back tire tubes tonight for the first time! This is a huge accomplishment for me as now when I race if I run into problems I can fix them myself! (In my first tri I had two flat tires and had to wait forever for the repair truck to come fix me up!)  I'm super excited about being able to do this now!!!!!

Sarah, I swam 400 meters and will let the experts do the conversion to yards.  At least that's what we decided to do at the start.  So do your 16 lengths, put that time in the spreadsheet, and make a note that it was meters.  Seems to me if you divide your time by 1.1 you'll be super close to your time in yards though.  If so that would drop my 9:30/400m to 8:36/400yds.
