DougRob - 2009-06-03 9:03 PM Has not been my day, but it could have been worse. I did my morning run nice and slow. It hurt my lungs more than I would have liked. I was planning on running this evening with this tri-coach that holds groups runs out of the local tri-store for free. Packed everything, but when I got to work I realized I left my running shoes at home.

Went home an decided I would do a road ride. Got out and felt pretty good. Thought I was going at a good clip and the hills did not hurt too bad. However the sky got ominous so I only did about 12 miles. Forgot to start my Garmin at the beginning so I lost some of the tracking data. When I was done it said I was slower than I thought I was. It had to be the traffic and lights I had to deal with.

Oh well, at least I did not crash, get a flat or getcaught in the rain. Now if I could stop my nose from running!!! AAAAUGGGGGHHH!!! (Please don't rain in Raleigh on saturday morning!)

Hang tough, man.  Being sick sucks.  I've concluded, in my brief life as an endurance athlete, that if I wait it out, the illness wins.  I keep going, although a little easier, and get over it quicker.

BigReub - 2009-06-03 11:39 PM Sarah, I swam 400 meters and will let the experts do the conversion to yards.  At least that's what we decided to do at the start.  So do your 16 lengths, put that time in the spreadsheet, and make a note that it was meters.  Seems to me if you divide your time by 1.1 you'll be super close to your time in yards though.  If so that would drop my 9:30/400m to 8:36/400yds.

I use this calculator all the time to do conversions!

Finally home after sitting in meetings for 2 1/2 days.  Way more tiring than training. I have been watching the weather for my first event of the season on Sunday and it looks like rain and 40s at the start.  If that's the case, do you have any tips on how to dress, handle the biking or anything else?

I am on the upswing, but since I rarely get sick, I have felt sub-human lately.

My first tri ever is saturday! Can't wait. Here is hoping the rain holds off. I have debated riding the road bike, but what is the point in owning a tri bike if you don't race it? I know the course so I think I am taking the new one.

Good luck to everyone this weekend.

Wow looks yesterday was a good day to miss on the group board. All about comparing pictures of other guys!! Good thing Linda jumped in and salvaged the day!!

Ya Sarah the weather doesnt look that great on Saturday for sure. But from I've heard with that Triathlon down there, its a blast. It is a massive, massive tri with people starting all day long. If it is chilly, at least your starting in ther afternoon and not one of the early birds when it'll be chilly on the bike.

I'm getting a little panicky actually....I have my 1st OWS on Sunday..(its supposed to be warmer on Sunday). And start time isn't until 10 AM. whewww.
We are heading out of town tomorrow AM to get up there, 3hrs drive. Buying myself a neoprene cap after work today to help with the coldness. And I'm taking Tracy's advice, and I'm not going to pee until Sunday morning, then let it all go in the suit!!! The plan is to try out the water friday night, maybe saturday as it is a community lake, but there are letting us all in to check it out prior to Sunday.

So OWS swim advice?

fattyfatfat - 2009-06-03 5:50 AM Another pacing question.

I have a pretty good idea of my pace when I just run.  But I'm finding I have NO clue what kind of pace I'm running off the bike.  At first I thought I was just thinking too much.  But at my last tri I thought I was moving along at a slow 10 minute pace when it was actually 8:46.  Last night's brick, I was thinking around 9:30-9:45 and it was closer to 8:15.  Whats up w/ this?

Trevor...I think you made a comment a few pages back about forgetting your ipod and having a great run.  Happened to me last night.  Funny thing I didn't even realize I forgot it until ~75% of the way through.  I was to busy listening to my body.

I have the same feeling of running slow after the bike.  I think ithat it's because we're used to processing our environment at the speed of the bike.  So the run, while not necessarily a slow run, seems slower because we're used to things coming at us at bike speed.  Every brick I've ever done, the run pace was significantly faster than it felt at the time and sometimes faster than my normal run-only workouts.

x2 I find that I really have to watch my pace when first starting my brick run so I don't go out too fast and gas myself.

OH and further to the pedals issue from YD...Wen to the LBS  and a guy looked at it and popped something back. I may have popped a spring out or something, cause he was a ble to adjust it no problem after that. I did buy new cleats, and got it all fired up last night, and it seemed like that solved the issue. So no Look's for me.

Cool beans! Saved the $$ for new pedals and cleats. Hey I diagnosed it from another country! Seriously, I am glad you got it fixed before your race this weekend. It is not a good idea to try new equipment for the first time in a race situation.

Welcome to team tri Sarah!

Great pics Jeremy!

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend! Sounds like there's a bunch of us.

I'm running a 5k race in Plains, MT Saturday. It's the only way I think I can get a decent time for our challenge... just can't push myself like that unless I'm racing.

They do make CO2 cartidges that have little "condoms" to protect you from the cold.  Here is an example of one from REI.  I carry 2 cartidges, spare tire, levers and patches.

Here is a no brainer conversion chart that I use...

http://www.onlineconversion.com/length_common.htm

Suzy, I would go with Arm Warmers.  If it gets too warm, you can just yank them down and ride w/ them on your around your wrist until T2.

Trevor, ows suggestions--- Study the course.   Look at things on land that you can spot while swimming (instead of trying to spot the orange buoy.  This way you are not have to come so high out of the water.).  Stay relaxed and when you are cranking along out there, just tell yourself it is LIKE ANY OTHER DAY AT THE POOL!  RELAX BREATH, RELAX BREATH!!!

Not quite sure what you are getting at

You need the super secret post decoder glasses to read it

So I upgraded the OS on my Storm last week and have not been able to post to BT using my phone ever since.  It works fine for other forums and FB, just not BT.  I apparently forgot about this nifty feature and posted away.

and not a biggee, but I 'd doing a sprint this wekend. My 1st Oly is not until the 20th.
And Steve, that is a good idea. Not getting focused on the buoys makes sense. And SURVIVE!

tahrens - 2009-06-03 11:03 AM I think you call what I did running.  I started out thinking I would just do a nice easy run and by the end I was spent.  We'll chalk this one up to opressive weather conditions.  You know you look bad during a run when you pass deer grazing on the side of the road and they don't even move!!!

Speaking of my run this morning, I don't recommend Burts Bee's Suntan lotion.  I'm a big fan of their lip balmb so I tried the sunscreen.  It is very thick and didn't absorb very well.  I looked like I had been patted down with talc powder.  Then with high humidity and sweating I had white liquid dripping off of me.  Pretty scary looking.

BTW - I HATE DENTAL INSURANCE!!   I've spent the whole moring arguing with them.  I'M MOVING TO CANADA!!!

X2 on the Dental insurance Sucks Rant!!! Might as well not have it, since nothing is covered but 2 cleanings a year.  Goodness gracious one should need a root canal or worse an implant.  I could have purchased a custom Guru Chrono with what I paid for dental treatments in 2008! DANG.  Make room for one more, Trevor???

I need to have a new crown put on my tooth up here in Canada and get 80% of it paid for. Of course the crown will be made from wood and mucd cause we're a little behind the times here and you're all welcome to move to Canada. I think Trevor and I can squeeze you in somewhere between us.

smoore3 - 2009-06-04 12:20 AM

For my race on Saturday the weather is calling for rain, with a low of 1 and a high of 10!Frown At least its not snow!  The swim is in a pool so the starts are staggered and I don't start racing till 3:10pm.  Does anyone have any suggestions about how I should eat differently since it is later in the day and suggestions of things I shouldnt eat?

Also, for the little challenge going on, how many laps are people who swim in a 25m pool swimming?

I changed  my own front and back tire tubes tonight for the first time! This is a huge accomplishment for me as now when I race if I run into problems I can fix them myself! (In my first tri I had two flat tires and had to wait forever for the repair truck to come fix me up!)  I'm super excited about being able to do this now!!!!!

For your eating I would say don't change your habits too much and definitely nothing new. Have a good meal about 3 to 4 hours before the race and then water. Maybe a gatorade half hour before you race. A lot of pre-race nutrition and hydration will depend on how far you are racing. I will be doing very little pre race extra stuff as it is a very short one for me. You should be drinking lots of wate now. You need to hydrate days before a race and not try and do it on race day.

15 laps in a 25 m pool will give you 410 yds.

I use a frame pump on my bike. Very small and light weight. I was going to say I have never had to use it but if I did that I know I would have a blowout on the course on Sunday so I woon't say it.

I hada PB in the pool last night. Put on my wet suit and did a 5:45 for 400 yds. My best time before that was the 6:40. I put on my wet suit for a trial run and wow did it ever come through. I did find that my arms were more tired than swimming without the suit though. I guess I need to HTFU with my arms.

Doing a TAT or super sprint on Sunday.

I take it you work for Microsoft. I used to work for one of the law firms that represented them. I remember goign to Remond and meeting with inventors. everything you could want was there so you had no reason to leave the office. Food, games, etc... What do you do there?
