Great bike Tony, did you get a compact crank or standard?

I'm finding the standard crankset on my Foil a bit tricky on steeper hills, I'm thinking of getting the LBS to either swap it for a compact or change the cassette, which option do you think would be best???

Jayne - great running! Getting speedy!

David - running barefoot just where the surf washes up on the wet sand in the moonlight is one of my favourite short runs, keep at it, its great when the moon suddenly comes out from behind a cloud or the stars are reflected around your feet

Compact crank for me, lol I also run an 11-28 cassette, lots of hill climbing so I need those extra couple gears to make it over.

That is one great looking bike.  What size is a compact crank?  170 mm is standard?  (mine are 160 mm, but I'm guessing that is kind of standard for a small bike - 51cm)

Dan, I think he is referring to the front cassette, probably 50/34...wow, your cranks are 160mm?

Thanks Kim...I did a quick search and now understand.  Yes, my cranks are 160mm and from what I have read that is about right (or perhaps still a little long) for my height.

Since people have started their IM countdowns already I'll start a fun weekly tradition I used for Canada last year.   Myself and 2 other girlfriends raced together so each week I would send an inspirational quote out.  We collected them all and put them in a memory book of our training adventure.  It's fun to look back on.

first quote: (modified from Fort Minor)

THIS IS 10% LUCK

20% SKILL

15% CONCENTRATED POWER OF WILL

5% PLEASURE

50% PAIN

AND 100% REASON TO REMEMBER THE NAME................

IRONMAN!!!!!

I love these quotes!  118 Days...

Hey Tony,

Didn't you write the Android app for BT to log workouts?  I've been using mine a lot (now that I'm training again) but I have a feedback comment.   Can strength workouts be added as an option?   I routinely lift and can't log that from my phone.   Yes I'm picky I know.  But if I'm gonna bother to do the work I want credit for it.   Thanks.  BTW, I love the app.

David, That is the most stunning description of I run I've ever heard.  Totally in love with you right now.  Just though you (and the rest of the mg) should know!  Wink

Tony, nice bike.  Sorry about mixing you up with Doug.

I'm recovering from my long run nicely.  What I need is more rest.  I can't seem to get more than 6-7 hours of sleep a night and I NEED my 8 hours.  MUST go to bed earlier--like 8:30pm.  jeesh

Thanks!  They wanted to go the mobile web way so they're not updating the app as far as I know.  If you open your browser and go to BT there is a mobile version now with a training log.

Very cool.  Thanks Tony.  I'm all set now.

THERAPY QUESTION*****   for those of you with pool running experience, how long do you do it?  I'm rehabing a stupid foot issue and was recommended to do pool running to reduce the pounding impact but still build strength.  But how long do people do it?  Last night I had a swim workout so I ran 5 laps in the pool afterwards.  Felt kind of silly but I'm game.

So what is everyone planning to do with an extra day in February?

PS. Bike Parts Express is having a tire sale, 15% off using code BPXTIRE.

I might actually be going to a spin class, never done one, a couple of guys on my team are going, the guy that teaches has finished the leadville 100 MTB bike race 4-5 times, so could be interesting.

Zach was due the first week in March of 1996 - I was SO worried he'd be born on 2/29.  He was speedy - made it in on 2/21!  Not a leap-baby.

Happy Leap Day!  Who is so excited about their upcoming weekend race they can hardly stand it?  Tell us all about it.

If you're not racing, tell us about your favorite running shoe.  Is it an old friend? or a new find? minimalist? standard?

No racing here.  My current running shoe is the ASICS Tarther (not to be confused with the ASCIS Tartar - a saucy shoe that John really liked).   I'm currently logging miles on my 6th, 7th and 8th pairs of that shoe.   They do keep making changes to the model, but so far I really like the way they fit my foot.  I lace them up and tie the knot once.  After that, I just slip them on.   I like a loose fit and with this approach I don't lose any time in T2 tying my shoes (I lose the time doing other things like putting on sunscreen).

Saucony Grid Type A4's   Awesome minamalist shoes, I ran Disney full and half in them without any issues, still have one fresh pair left for when I ever get around to running again.

LOL - Drew was due on 2/29 as well.  He popped out 2/14.  Guess he had another special day in mind.

Minor brag moment on my kiddo - last night was our end of season wrestling banquet.  Wow was that loud - almost 90 kids on the team.  Anyways, he won the Coach's Award.  :-)

No racing for me.  My favorite shoe - Zoots!  I've gone through 4 or 5 pairs of various versions and loved them all.  I used them for all distances.  Favorite trail shoe - New Balance MT150.  Super light but probably not good for hard core trail running although I survived 15m on the AT with them.

No racing for me either.  I was a die hard Brooks Launch fan, but searched far and wide for a shoe to rotate into the mix.  I've found two that I really like, the Saucony Cortanas and the Saucony A5s.  Both are a 4mm drop versus the Launch's 10mm and I am surprised how well I was able to transition into them.  For now, I use one of the Sauconys on speed and easy days and the Brooks for long runs. Really grooving on the A5s the most, but I will need to see if I can do long distance in them or not...time will tell.

Tony- Nice bike!  Enjoy!  And congrats to Drew.  Nice work on the Coaches award!

Spanky- Nice score on the Zipps.  If you got it, flaunt it.

Love the quotes, Tracey and Kyla.

193 days til IMMoo!  good news; the flight has been booked! bad news; had a rough week+.  My grandmother passed away, then the stomach bug went through the house (I was spared, thankfully), then my shoulder knot came back this time pinching a nerve in my neck. Got the knot under control but the pinched nerve is still present.  Sunday was the worst.  I couldn't move and even lying down I was in severe pain.  I feel like I'm falling apart!  I'm not even 40 yet!  WTF?!?!?! Drs appt on Fri. Praying for relief bc swimming can't happen with the state I'm in.

Nothing special in store for today. Just following the plan.

Been running in Brooks Ghosts but I don't know if I've tried enough shoes to say whether or not they are my favorites.  I picked up some Mizuno's recently and they are not going to work for me.  I have an urge to try something new but then another part says, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If anyone is looking for something to do with kale, this is a recipe for an awesome and easy weekday soup.  The kids weren't huge fans but I loved it.

Off-road, I'm running in a minimalist shoe, New Balance Minimus 10.  They are a 4mm heel to toe drop.  I LOVE THEM

minimus

On-road, I have a new friend.  I really wanted to keep running in the minimalist shoe, but found that it didn't have enough cusion in the forefoot for the long road runs.  My new road shoe is the Brooks Pure Flow.  They also have a 4mm heel/toe drop.  Haven't put a lot of miles on them yet, but so far, so good.

Pure Flow

With all this running shoe talk, I thought this was an interesting article from USA Triathlon

Saucony Guide's for me.  I liked the "old" model better than the new model, so I may make another change for the next purchase.  I am purely a mid-foot to full-full striker depending on how tired I am (because I found I tend to close my hips as I get tiredand haven't had any injury issues, so I never bought into the minimalist concept.  If it ain't broke, don't break it!!!  Laughing

No racing for me anytime soon, and I am actually considering pushing the entire season back until June for any race starts.
