Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mark, great job with your marathon and hope you had fun! Mae, congratulations and welcome to the tri club! Ernesto, good to see you are enjoying "la buena vida" on the beach! I returned last night from Taiwan and after really long flights without sleep, still could not fall sleep last night and have been exhausted all day today. I still manage to get a 1 hr, 7.4 mi run in today morning to start the July challenge. Jim S 0/ B 0/ R 2 Rest 1 Total 2 time 2:16:56 |

![]() | ![]() Did my first bandit ever this morning. My wife signed up for the Red, White, and Boom Half Marathon (for $70). But due to the heat and humidity (it was 85 degrees and near 100% humidity at 5 AM this morning) it was shortened to 5 miles. I decided at the last minute to run with her and it was too late to register I think, and, also, I wasn't going to spend $70 for a five mile race. I was going to enter the race just after the start and join my wife, but I didn't see her run by. So I let everyone else run by and joined the tail end. Did the first 2.5 miles at about 8 min pace. Wife had started near front, but went out at about an 8:30 pace, which was too fast for her given the conditions. Caught up with her at about mile 2.5 and ran/walked with her from there on (stepping off the course just before the finish line). As for the morality of banditing, my rationalization is that our family paid for 13.1 miles and got 10. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Super hot and humid today so I'm not sure if I'm going to skip the planned workout or just trim it back a whole bunch. Waited until late in the day yesterday after all the thunder boomers went through the area to get my run in and the weather was really nice. Rain took away all the humidity and dropped the temp by about 20 degrees. Hoping for the same today. -Chris, I normally don't agree with banditing the race, but $70 buck for a 5 mile race seems pretty steep to me. I'm assuming they were prepared for the full course with volunteers and aid stations, so one extra person wouldn't have hampered the efforts to accommodate all the runners Scott S 0/ B 1/ R 2 Rest 0 Total 3 Time 3:21:00 |

They're more important than sex. Sam Weber: Ah, come on. Nothing's more important than sex. Michael: Oh yeah? Ever gone a week without a rationalization? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy 4th of July to everyone in the US! I just became a stronger believer in the MAF philosophy. Today I did an early morning 5k test at the track, after having done zero speed work since last year, and was able to lower my best 5k time by almost 3 minutes, to 20:38! So going slower to eventually go faster does seem to work! Scott S 0/ B 1/ R 2 Rest 0 Total 3 Time 3:21:00 |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, despite the fact that I've been on leave from work since Monday morning (when I finished night shift), I don't appear to have had any time this week sitting and doing nothing. We're leaving for Switzerland on Saturday and there appears to be a never ending list of errands for me to run. Kevin's at work until late on Friday, so I'm sorting everything out, making sure all the laundry is done, buying last minute bits and pieces and generally trying to figure out if there's anything we've forgotten to take into consideration (because of course they don't have shops in Switzerland...). I'm out for the July challenge. Between tapering, driving across Europe (twice), doing IM, recovering from IM and then heading straight out to work in London for the olympics I've got enough on my plate. Good luck to all the participants. And finally, a little story for your entertainment: On Tuesday I changed my tyres over from my gatorskins to my race tyres (Schwalbe Ultremo R1s). I took the wheels off my bike to do this (obviously). In the evening on Tuesday we have our club's open water swim session, which is usually followed by some kind of bike session (this week an intervals session). Knowing that I would have to take my wheels off the bike to put it in my car that evening, I decided to just leave them off after changing the tyres. I put my bike in the car, put all the rest of my stuff in the car and headed out for the swim. I had my swim and was just getting into my cycling clothes afterwards when I realised that I had a text from Kevin saying "have you forgotten your wheels?" Needless to say, there was much laughing (my coach nearly fell over she was laughing so hard), and I didn't get my ride in... |

Good bike today despite the intense heat. Think I might be getting over the dread of getting on the bike every couple of days to train. Was actually a nice ride back watching the sun go down. JoeP- I need to know how you convinced the wife to let you train for the IM. Mine still says "No way!" LOL |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JBacarella - 2012-07-05 10:41 PM JoeP I'm with Scott on this one. How much did it cost. It was not a one for one trade and, in retrospect, it was a multi-step process of wearing my wife down (and in the end, capitulation on my part) Here are my notes: - Create a low likelihood scenario. I kept telling my wife I didn't want to do a IM or that I didn't think I could get through one. By lowering expectations, she took me less seriously. Plus, I find that my wife indulges me more when I appear vulnerable. - Train like crazy for a HIM. For my last HIM, I had max weeks of 15-17 hours. While it drove my wife crazy, there's only an incremental amount of more training (and over a longer of period of time) to do a full IM. If she survived heavy HIM training, I told her she can survive IM training. - Pick a date more than 1 year away. Sitting here in 2012, 2014 sounds like a long way and thus, a lot less threatening. - Pitch the experience as one and done. I kept telling my wife that I have one IM in me and that I wanted to do it when I turned 45 (2014). As a bucket list kind of endeavor, it made for an easier bargain. - Bring up the idea when alcohol is involved. Wife had a couple of cocktails in her when we were out with friends and that was when I received the verbal consent. - Lastly, I agreed a month ago to redo our entire kitchen - new cabinets, new appliances, new fixtures, new floors, new electrical work, etc. As you can imagine, the IM will cost me well into the five figures!!!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Joe, registration for IMTX opens on the eleventh, come to my backyard and race here! It will be fun, plus Gabe is probably doing it and I am for sure. As for me, today it is my last day in Cancún, tomorrow heading back to the oven, I mean Dallas. I have done almost nothing as far as training here (only two runs and a ton of snorkeling) but vacations from training are over as I am only seventeen weeks from my A race, IMFL. |
