Hey, thanks guys...I have been MIA and struggling with free time...as I type now I am in class during a break; the improvement came 6 mins faster in the swim, 10 in the run and the rest in T times and bike. One class is over and I am rethinking this degree thing. Thanks for being there even though I have not been there for you!

Check-in Did a 6 mile ride on the stationary bike while waiting for my daughter to finish gymnastics. Yet another day when my kids prevented me from giving in to the funk. In the past I've dropped training about a few weeks prior to the race (which makes NO sense at all I know) but this year I'm still rocking and rolling with their help. I'll tell you what, involving family and training with friends makes it much harder to slack off. If anyone is having trouble getting motivated then involve others. They help keep you honest.

Nicole & Jeff I sent two emails asking them to put the website into reorder mode. I'll try to remember to call tomorrow to see if I have more luck with the phone. No worries though....I'm going to keep plugging away to get it turned back on.

Juan I saw AC/DC in concert a few years ago. Angus may look like a sweaty version of Gollum from Lord of the Rings, but they sure rocked the place. Enjoy it!

Devon Let me know how you like your first run in the moon shoes (Hokas). I'm liking them. I haven't had any of the repetitive impact pain on the ball of the foot during my long runs. I'm curious if you have the same experience.

Got in about 4 miles today on them, they are definitely different to run in shin and foot pain went away, although my calfs and hamstrings were hurting, could be my legs just getting used to a new shoe...

Also realized that I had the insoles in backwards, so that probably had a lot of effect on the comfort level of them..but damn are they cushy.

Dave and team, what would you think about taking the BDAS logo from the shirts and doing a water bottle? Polar will make individual bottles off a photo or will do custom runs- I'm not sure the minimum, but I can call and ask if people are interested.

I did my first 5k of the season last night at a local weekly dine and dash series. I wasn't feeling great, but with the running team it was more fun. I ran a 28:34 which for me in April is pretty good. Now the challenge of staying consistent to keep improving is where I struggle! It was a pretty good day for me though with yoga at lunch and a 5k after.

I really, really need to swim.

Congrats on all the racers!

Some of you guys are really putting down lots of miles in training.

Juan, you have to get the aero helmet! They just look cool ;-)

Dave O - Thank you! No worries if it is not immediate, but I would love a shirt eventually. I am going to be so jealous when you all get yours!

Juan - Raising money for something like that is definitely an incredible extra goal! I should get connected with something like that here.

Check in - My friend oversees the Shake Shacks (super delicious burger/milkshake place) in Baltimore and DC, and originally ran the one in Philly. He started something called Shack Track and Field, where the 2nd Tuesday of every month they do a run in every city there is a Shake Shack (3-5 mile run). It was kind of gross here last night and I had a friend visiting so we almost didn't go, but he called me and guilted me into it (the best kind of peer pressure!). At the end of the run, the first drink is on Shake Shack (I had an Exile Red Ale), but because this was the first run in Baltimore, we also got free burgers, fries, ice cream, and tshirts! All because I went for a 3 mile run! Totally negated any good I did in the run, but mannnnnn it was so delicious.

Man - dine and dash, Shake Shack run, all this stuff happening weekly... Can I just tell you that nothing like that happens where I am? Possibly in Boston, but out where I am... It's mostly a Massachusetts thing I think, the state was founded by Puritans and so many of the laws are still in the books. It was only a few years ago that we could buy beer on Sundays, and even then it's only from 12-6. A friend of mine just moved to Charleston SC from here and they have a ton of stuff like this going on too. She does weekly beer runs - this group gets together once a week and sets up a run through the city that ends at a bar. At least I have you guys for vicarious living

John, the trade off in Boulder is having a million options but giving up all hope of ever getting a podium in anything ;-). Last night in the Men's small Tuesday night race the first age group for men that didn't have at least 1 person under 20 minutes in the 5k was 70+ I think (was talking with a 50 yr old friend while they read the results.)

I'd be up for a water bottle.

Alan- I sent Flow an email and I am thinking of going with them. 60/90. Do you currently ride them and for how long?

Nicole- the run sounds fun and rewarding!

I am glad you guys like the hokas. They have really helped me with comfort and injury.

I skipped my swim today because I swam yesterday so I'll do it tomorrow. I am pretty sore having only taken one day off after my marathon, but getting pumped up for the ironman. I am a little nervous already but I am guessing that is good as it will keep me motivated. I put my training plan for the dopey on the calender. Its a 15 week plan but I will only be able to do 11 weeks of it because of the IM. I'm guessing that my IM training will put me ahead of the game.

I'm also glad to see so many of you on garmin connect. I love seeing what everyone is doing and keeping up with the workouts.

I do currently ride them. I bought mine in January and have been riding on them since I've been able to get out on the road. A few training rides and three races so far. I find them to be exceptionally fast compared to my 30mm Shimano wheels. They handle well in crosswinds though I do notice a little when there are heavy gusts. I love them.

The only thing than would make this day better is if I were a Sox fan... 72 degrees for their season opener and they rocked the Nats! What do you think about that John? Jenn? Not too shabby!

Great job Dave keeping up with your goals!

Wish I was outside for the game... Had to follow along the first 6 innings on my ESPN app, and got the rest on the radio in the car, windows down! Hey how bout that Mookie Betts?

I did captain a Rally for the Jimmy Fund team at work which turned out way better than expected. Sure you all know what the Jimmy fund is (patient funding and research money for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute). It's real special to us in Boston, and closely tied with the Sox. Each year for Opening Day at Fenway, they do this Rally - for a min $5 donation to join the team, you get to wear your Sox gear to work on Opening Day. Ended up with 25 people on my team and absolutely shattered my fundraising goal - I set $100 figuring 20 people, we ended up well over $700 and then the company matched it, grand total ~$1500. All in all it was a fantastic day!

John - Congrats on blowing up your fun raising goals! That's huge!

As for the Sox - they are looking pretty good so far. The power is there, which I expected but the pitching has been there as well! Sadly, my wife has become a fan of the home town team (bugs me ) so I hope they do well!

Ok my race report WARNING this will be a long one:

Went to bed last night around 9. Told my wife not to come to the race traffic was going to be a beast and besides its just a training run. It will be challenging but its just a marathon not my iron man (BTW there is no such thing as JUST A MARATHON). Race day also happens to be our 8th wedding anniversary so we are going out to dinner when I get home. A little back story is that my wife ran the Disney marathon back in Jan 2002. I had signed up but as fate would have it I was deployed with the national guard and couldn't run. I begged my CO and he let me drive down the day before the race, watch the race then drive back the same day (13 hrs one way) I surprised her and may bring it up from time to time or weekly whatever.

I got up at 0400 and parked at the down town police station which was only a few blocks from the start plus I have a locker room and a real toilet with no line. I met up with one guy from my team and a female officer who works in Spec Ops with us but a different unit. He was looking to run a sub 4 hr not sure what she wanted to run. I told them I wanted to keep it under 5 hrs with me being sick and not having prepared as well as I should have (my longest run was 13) My plan is to run 3hrs then walk run the rest. We talked to some of the command staff for the district and hung out until almost race time then walked over. Our team was working the event and told me one last time not to run (they had been telling me not to do it because of the illness all week). I felt pretty good actually had my inhaler in my pocket and took a gel with me because I had heard there were not many gel stops.

I was in corral 19 so once the first corral started I still had a long wait. First 10 miles were pretty normal, I was having a hard time breathing and the hills in Raleigh are never ending, you are running up one or down one at all times but over all I felt good. I took my gel at :45 in and was taking in water since I had not trained with Gatorade endurance. At mile 8 I had not seen a station with gel and there wasn't any at the aid station, or the next, or the next. By this time i am not happy I am passed where I feel I need calories. I asked a worker and they told me they where not sure where the gels would be, but they thought I had missed the first set. ARGHHH I'm really not happy. I start taking the Gatorade, luckily my stomach accepts it. I finally see gels at an aid station (I think 14 or 15 miles) I jam 5 of them in my pockets and took one. I have passed the 4:45 and 4:30 pacers and asked what corral they started in since it was not mine. found out they were in 14 so I had made up some time. As I am approaching the 3 hr mark I realize that I am only going to get 18 not the 20 I was hoping for. I had not been paying attention to the spectators much every now and then I would hear "go Scott" but it was because names were on the race bib. But at the 2:40 mark I heard it and looked up to see my wife and daughter cheering me on. I was happy to see them and was still feeling pretty good. Pushed though and started my walk run about the time I was entering the lake where I train (we only ran the flat front not the large hills on the back side). Then on a green way for a while. Even with the walk run I hit the wall and hit it hard somewhere around 20. I couldn't breath, my legs wanted to quit and my mind was past ready, my I pod had given me the low battery so I knew that was almost done also. I looked up and saw them both again. They had driven down the road and set up as the green way crossed a road. It almost brought me to tears (which is odd because my wife thinks I'm a robot). That was it I knew I could do this only 6 more (terrible hilly awful) miles left.

The last 6 miles were hard but I stuck to my plan and did the run/walk. I made it around 4:40ish. Official time is not in, and I forgot to stop my Garmin until I had water, medal and Gatorade at 4:45. I learned a valuable lesson I will never run with bronchitis again, and there is no such thing as just a marathon.

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and keeping me in the race even when I questioned myself. I am glad I did it, now off to take my wife and daughter out for our 8 year anniversary. The picture is mile 18.

Awesome job! Way to push through and finish! What an achievement.

Scott - That is an awesome race report. Loved the grit and determination you showed to not only start it but to finish it in stride. You're right - there is no such thing as "just a marathon" It's quite an achievement!

What's next on your race calendar?

I would love a couple of water bottles. As we talking about bottles for the bike or bottles like a camelback? I think it's a great idea! What does everyone else think?

Always down for a water bottle - either a bike bottle or a camelback type (the sqeeze kind). For the former I don't actually own any and have to borrow from my wife's collection of Tri swag. For the latter I own one and use the crap out of it.

Lol. There are 4 levels of bike racing (5 in the states). You get points by placing in races (higher the place = more points) once you get a certain number of points you can move up into a higher category. Sometimes, as in my case, even if you don't have enough points but show you can compete at a higher category you can request an upgrade. Because I came third in my first ever race, they let me move up.
