Expert 4938 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Hey, all. After a completely uneventful 14+ hour drive over two days we're now in Florida for three weeks. Weather is all over the place but hoping to get a few outdoor rides and runs in. Last week's recovery week went well, including an extra short run thrown in for frequency's sake. Today was supposed to be an off day but after sitting in a car for two days I decided to jump on the trainer for 20 minutes and do some core work - tomorrow begins Phase 3 of running training (focusing on VO2 max intervals) plus upping the running volume. We have a nice lap pool here but it's outdoors and some of the mornings are chilly and it's dark until like 7:15 now after daylight savings time. @Andrew: nice work - back-to-back 50km weeks is awesome; I never did triathlon with little kids so I can imagine it's tough @Gretchen: love the cold water pools (to a point) - shock the first five minutes then it feels great; good luck with parenting for a week @Nathalie: assumed you recovered from goalie-ing @Nicole: how did the run go????? I know it was pretty crappy weather-wise in Baltimore over the weekend so that's a test @DQ: where are ya, man? how's the new ride? |

2127 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Ok...so I didn't run. It was miserably rainy Saturday and super windy yesterday and today. BUT!! I made it to masters practice Saturday morning! Got in about 1400 yds. There's a meet this weekend so they were doing speed with lots of rest. I have just one speed, and my shoulders were struggling after doing strength the day before, and since I haven't been in the pool in ages. I was in for about an hour. But the first is always the hardest! Need to do some stretching this week, and I really will get my run on this week. It's supposed to get up into the 70s F here so I won't have much of an excuse at that point |

1943 , Kronobergs lan | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Yes, totally recovered from goalie-ing, doing it again at the weekend I hope. It’s difficult to get people to tell you if they can or cannot play. I am getting tired of chasing them. Yes, after 2 days in the car, I would definitely need to train too. Talking of recovery, after my long run yesterday (90 minutes), my watch said I should rest for 4 hours. After 45 minutes of walk/jog/lite strength tonight, it said to rest 68 hours. Umm… Not that I pay any attention to that but it’s weird. Soon time for SHL playoffs. Last game of the regular season tomorrow to determine if we finish 2nd or 3rd. Sadly, it’s been too up and down lately to keep that 1st place. Hope the team will be back to (mostly) winning ways for the playoffs, otherwise it’s gonna be a short season. |

Meanwhile my daughter is doing a half marathon plan based completely on what the Garmin training plan says. |

Yet...that is what I did. |

The size of your country is mind boggling to us antipodeans, I think I've said before, the furthest I can drive from home before running out of land is about 8 hours. But, any more than 4 hours and I'd rather fly. |

I think coach Gretchen knows that if athlete Gretchen gets the work done nice and early then it's going to happen, and less chance life is going to get in the way during the day and sessions getting skipped. And you've got to applaud that. You do have to watch that Coach Gretchen though, after all she created the franken plan |

Expert 4938 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Good start to the week down here in Florida - weather is perfect right now...high 50s in the early morning and around 80 by 3 PM. Got in a nice interval run yesterday morning with some strength work, then will do a double today with a short swim (done - resort pool was pretty warm so I'm going to tame down the swimming plans a touch) and I'll grab an hour on the Kinetic (I drag that down with us, my Tacx is too heavy and bulky) at lunch. My daughter flies down for a week (she can also work from home) so we're going to get a long ride in on Saturday on the bike trails north of here. During my run yesterday morning (around 6:45 AM) I saw quite a few cars here at the resort packing all the kids to head over to the amusement parks (Disney and Universal - I much prefer the latter). Everyone had this look of equal parts exhaustion and excitement. This place has just a really cool vibe in March. Oh, and the pollen (cough, cough, sneeze). |

Regular 1781 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Glad you're enjoying the time away Mike. Personally I have never, brought a bike and indoor trainer on holiday with me, so kudos to you. For me, an uneventful start to the week. Been catching up on sleep, so no morning workouts so far. Just a 45 minute easy Z2 treadmill run Tuesday night, and a 45 minute progression run (The treadmill, and my HR have me working up through the pace ranges. Mr Garmins pace, not so much) again on the treadmill Wednesday. Will be back on the treadmill again tonight. But Friday I need to give up the sleep ins and get back outside for a proper run. The dog is starting to sulk. |

In the way, I stopped at a local bike trail system and rode 38miles. Weather was great, if a bit windy. I really enjoyed the ride. I too brought my (dumb) trainer for the weekend. I’ll get another long ride on the trails on Monday, but in the between time I’ll trainer it. |

Expert 4938 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN @Gretchen/Andrew: I'll say this for dumb trainers, the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine that I bought close to 15 years ago is still doing its job exactly as designed, and it folds up nicely behind a seat in the car. The single best investment I've ever made in triathlon training (and likely general workout/health as converts any bike to an indoor one). |

My Cycleops is a little bulkier, but has traveled with me a ton to make sure I can get in my workouts. When I was at my folks house for 6 weeks in early 2021 it was a life saver...no gym and when I tried riding Mom and Dad's 1990s era Schwinn Airdyne stationary bike parts flew off when I was warming up. It didn't bode well for the rest of the workout! |

Member 3149 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN SUUUUPPPPPPEEEEERRRRRR fun morning here...not. I'm three hours into house/child sitting for my parents. I've managed to wake the kids up, feed them, and get two of the three off to school all on time (third has delayed start today). I'm feeling pretty good about myself. I'm riding my bike on the trainer on the front porch and I'm about 30' into the ride and the lightening that I've been seeing way off in the distance starts getting closer than I'm comfortable with, so I decide to call the workout. I get off the bike, head inside to use the restroom. In the three minutes I was inside a tornado landed in the neighborhood. I kid you not...I came out of the bathroom and I heard a huge crash. That would be my bike, still attached to the 45# trainer, crashing over and being pushed down and off the porch by the wind...along with all the porch furniture (including two wooden Adirondack chairs that I built, they are heavy!). It is hailing and pouring so hard I can't see my truck parked 30' from the front door. Limbs are down everywhere and the wind is blowing so hard I can't push the storm door open to get outside and rescue my bike! I just had to stand at the door and watch my poor Trixie get battered as it was pushed across the driveway (still attached to the trainer and tangled in a pile of porch furniture). Power went off. Kids are texting me from the school scared because they have to shelter in the locker rooms. Oldest kid (17) is telling me she needs to leave for school (she drives herself) or she'll be late. She's throwing a tantrum because I won't let her leave for school IN THE MIDDLE OF A TORNADO! I know...I'm awful. Well played, universe. After a few minutes I was able to run outside and rescue my bike before it got blown into my dad's truck (not sure which of us would have been sadder about that!). I did a quick inspection and I don't see any major damage (thankfully). We'll see how it plays out during my next ride. Fingers crossed. THEN...then I went to my parent's gym to swim. They have a 25 yd saltwater pool that is about 80F...WAY too hot. And it doesn't have gutters on the side, so all the water sloshes around and makes waves. It isn't terrible if it is only you in the pool, but today there was an old guy in there doing the simultaneous double armed backstroke diagonally across three of the four lanes. There are no lane lines, but the drop ceiling is only 10' tall, so you should be able to use that as a guide! I think he resented me being in there. I got my 1600yds in and got out as fast as I could. At least I didn't get motion sick, which I have done in the past. I guess this all balances out yesterday's Wednesday afternoon 2:20 outdoor ride on the local bike trails where it was gorgeous and fun and I was going fast at minimal effort (yay for seeing training pay off!!). |

In all seriousness a bike, attached to a trainer flying around does not sound healthy for the bike. Hopefully your initial inspection is right and you avoided any real damage, but please triple check everything before heading out for a real ride on it. Enjoy your week of parenting. Hope you have better luck for the rest of your stay than today |

Thankfully my daughter will be here to keep The Wife company so I'm not in trouble. We travel down here 4-6 weeks every spring and I take like 5-7 days off for vacation but it's definitely not all holiday. And I love riding the trails about a half hour north of here. |

Who had 'trainer workout interrupted by tornado' on their bingo card for 2024? Yeah, riding my bike on the trainer into a tornado was not on my list of likely triathlon training stories. We need a top ten "Gretchen Training Stories" at some point. LOL Oh, and I worked out this morning. It was at a gym, it was just me and The Wife. I did 35' or so on the treadmill with 10' @ tempo and then we did some strength work where the dumbbells organized and tried to kidnap us. And it was dark outside!!! And other people came to the gym! (OK the dumbbell part didn't happen, but it was really tense when the other people showed up...I mean, there's only one Peloton bike). Seriously, Gretchen...glad you and Trixie and the kids on your watch are OK. |
