Well, I'm back after a wkend of binge drinking, pizza, a blizzard (16+ inches in 24 hours), total lack of motivation, and a report of still being below 190 for the past 4-5 days... No seriously, I got wasted, ate pizza, shoveled about 7 driveways (some multiple times), and I have not gained a lb!!!! I am so happy. I even missed I think 2 or 3 workout sessions this past wk.

BTW AbbieR, I just sent those pix. Sorry about procrastinating, maybe it's the weather.

Saling,
Happy B-day, so you're...... 99 + how many yrs.? J/K. The uh red shoes, they got velcro for arthritis... I mean easy transitioning from bike to run, right? ROTFLMAO

Ceade: sorry you're not feeling well. When I was sick earlier this year, I had to take at least 4 days off training too. Get back when you can. We'll be here!

Hi :-)

I need some weight training Ideas. At the moment I am doing calf raises, Squats, overhand rows, underhand rows and an ab routine that targets upper, lower and obliques. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should add or what I need to be focussing on more? I though it might be a good idea to put in a little more work on my legs, I heard that will help prevent injury and at my weight I need all the help I can get in that department :-)

Saling was right squats, I know from personal experience, have helped tremendously in the explosive power and reaction time in my quads. They can be great for the hamstrings, glutes, and calves(if you add in a toe raise when coming out of a rep.) Just make sure you stretch, because a sore muscle may lead to a pulled one. Lunges are good to, as well as using the steps as in aerobics class. Anything that will get your legs burning good will help in endurance, strength, and exp. power in the long run... And they can be pretty long.

Tried the squats with a raise at the end this morning at the gym and the difference was quite pronounced (to say the least :-)) I'm glad I've got a weights rest day tomorrow. I'm definately including them in my regular routine.

That snow sounds amazing i146g, Down here we don't see much snow on the ground. I lived in a town in the foothills of the southern alps last year and we got about an inch of snow, I can't imagine what over a foot would be like... shovelling all those drives would be a good workout though, I guess there's some payoff :-)

i146q:  Sometimes it feels pretty much like 99+.  Couple more years and I can live in those old folks neighborhoods.  Just so you know they are not velcro they are red yankz..so there.

Kiwi, Glad to know that you felt the difference.  The walking lunges will work quite well too.

You may not glide now - but if you work at it you'll get better and better. My best tip is to focus on ONE thing at a time. You can't work on your catch, your elbow, your rotation, your glide at once. Pick one thing, do some drills, then swim some straight sets, then drill again and swim again. And really focus on whatever you picked. I think that's the best way to get better.

I completely agree that focusing on one thing at a time is the thing to do. I'm still focusing on three strokes, head up and breathing without swallowing any water.

I did go to the pool this morning against the advice of the doc, but my knee felt fine. I think it went better this morning. I did some watching of the other swimmers and picked up a few pointers. I don't feel as out of breath as I have in the past which I considered a huge milestone. Still swallowing water which is the next thing I am going to focus on.

Eating this weekend wasn't so good...hangs head in shame. Back on the wagon I go!

Josh-my bday is 3/13.  My hubby laughs at me because I keep telling him my birthday should be a national holiday.  What can I say, birthdays were always really big in my family.  Great pics!!  Congrats on being under 190, but I'd say with all of the driveway shoveling, you did plenty of working out!

Kiwi, Glad to know that you felt the difference. The walking lunges will work quite well too.

x2 on the walking lunges - those are killer awesome.  Anything where you're using the stabilizing muscles as well as the weight bearing muscles is going to work better overall.

Next step, is to mix it up when you feel up to it. Try: step forward into a lunge with the right foot, keeping the right knee over the ankle, hold, and follow up with the left leg until standing straight up and down, now do five (5) deep seated squats w/a calf-toe raise. When done with that immediately repeat with the lunge using the left foot. After the lunge with the left, turn around and go back the same way you came, again starting with the right foot, 5 more squats and another lunge. Do this: 1 lunge (R), 5 squats (calf raise), 1 lunge (L) + turn and repeat for 1 repetition. Go forward and back to complete one rep X 5 = a total of 20 lunges and 50 squat/calf raises. That's what I do for my squats and lunges 3 times a wk. They work, trust me!!!!!!!!. After 3 wks at the MOST you'll start to see definition, and notice a bunch of strength.

As to the snow, the weather channel here in the states is calling it Blizzard '08. I haven't seen this much snow in a 24 hr period in almost 12 yrs. so it's a site to behold, even for us Ohioans. But alas, all things must come to an end. It's the day after and already 25-33% of it has already melted. It got up to I think 48-55 degrees F. today, oh well, it was good enough for a change in workout/training (burning a bunch of cal. and all).

Well the dream was short lived, this morning already back up to 192. Now whether a delayed reaction or water, I don't really care. Just those 4 days of sub 190 were blissfull. I'd hate me too! Besides, whose really living the dream, Ca-dreamer? By the by, I used to live in Ventura County (Oxnard), I miss those beaches.

Besides, I just sent my 1, 30 and 60 day photos to abbie.... She says, officially, I'm not allowed to complain about the scale anymore. "You're turning into stone", she says.... If anything, I'm burning off the reserves and that's what we're here for right? How can I motivate you to get results??? Have you ever heard of the P90 in-home boot camp system? If not, look it up, it's done wonders so far.

Wat to  go Sappho and I146Q.  You know those numbers exist and your body knows it can get there so 3/4 of the battle is won.  Just don't retreat on the verge of victory.

Hey skinny people!

As I have mentioned, 8-9 weeks ago I started an intense cycling class, called eCycling.  This is not your everyday "spinning" class.  This is an intense 90 minute workout 2x/week where you need to eat gu/gel, just to make it through!  Everyone is on their own bike hooked up to a Computrainer and you train a certain power levels based upon your fitness accessment.........So I just got back from my fitness accessment and wanted to share my results, especially since I b-itch and moan about the scale 24/7.  It gets sooooo hard not to focus on that scale number, but here's what my 8 weeks of training have done to my body, that the scale does NOT show.

Overall I have gained 0.9 pound (yes I did not want to round up that last .1) on the scale, BUT

I have LOST 7.78 pounds of body fat

I have gained 8.63 pounds of lean body mass

My % of body fat has decreased by 5.7%

My leg circumference has gone up 1 CM, BUT my skinfold test has gone down....basically my legs are bigger (bummer) but they have less fat.

My peak power on the bike has increased by 5 watts, however, the last 8 weeks of cycling class have been focused on building the engine, so it was impressive that my power increased at all.  The technition was pretty impressed, and this guy works with pro cyclists and pro triathletes, so yay me!

My cycling economy has increased by 2 watts, so I'm becoming a more efficient cyclist!

I would still love for the number on the scale to be lower, but there are so many more positive changes in my body that ARE happening, so I need to focus on that.  I just wanted to share with you as I know we ALL get stressed about the scale.  Think about all of the changes that are happening that the scale is NOT telling you.

Feel free to throw this post back at me tomorrow when I'm pissed about the number on my scale

Abbie

I'm sure the scale will not be kind tomorrow.....I had a peanut butter chocolate chunk cookie at 3pm, my hormones made me eat it!!!  Plus I have not been drinking enough water today.  Regardless, I realized when I got into work this morning, I can throw another pair of "droopey Draws" on the "Do NOT Dry Clean and head to the back of the closet" pile of pants I'm accumulating.

Well, actually, I'm really happy with my results so far - just can't imagine eating pizza and drinking beer and not IMMEDIATELY paying for it.  Working on adding more bodyweight strength training into my routine although I'm not doing a whole lot right now.  I can't afford a gym membership, but that's no excuse.  You talked about the P90 - I haven't checked it out yet, but I will.

Yeah, and ok, I'm jealous of your fitness - but in return, it's 70 degrees here, sunny and GORGEOUS.  No snow for me.  I guess we all have these little trade-offs.

Cookies are evil.  If you fell to the cookie, I hope you enjoyed it immensely...  Oh, and get rid of those clothes that are too big, unless you want to be wearing them again at some point.  If you don't, subconsciously you're telling yourself that you're going to need those sizes again.  Just a thought.
