Pro 4541 A farming town in MN | Subject: RE: Cheesecake Lovers Afternoon Team Cheesecake. Started off the month with an open water swim at lunch (East Medicine Lake...only 2 minutes away from work). First OWS of the season. I'm glad I waited until the water warmed up a little. 32 minutes, 1554 yds. Buoy to buoy 111 yds (Garmin GPS reading...walked along the shore beforehand). BlueSeventy sleeveless wetsuit. Water temp was PERFECT. I'd say about 62 degrees. Good sighting practice. Showered in corp. gym, so hoping I don't go home with a case of swimmer's itch... O.K., so I'm feeling like I'm ready for this HIM swim and run. The bike, not so much...gonna try to commute to work on my tri bike, but am REALLY nervous about it... |

The bike, not so much...gonna try to commute to work on my tri bike, but am REALLY nervous about it... When is your HIM? I'm considering registering for one in Sept., but it's the swim that worries me. A lot. June 14th...nice cool lakes of Minnesota...which means it will most likely be wetsuit legal... Swim used to be my worse event...2-3 times/week in the pool/lake takes care of that... Wetsuit also really helps with bouyancy...impossible to sink with one on... I imagine the reservoirs in CO are all fed by spring and mountain runoff...I remember swimming in Cherry Creek Res in July (non-wetsuit) and thinking how cold it was... What's the part that worries you the most? Edited by sparco 2008-06-02 2:13 PM |

Colorado | Subject: RE: Cheesecake Lovers Wetsuit also really helps with bouyancy...impossible to sink with one on... I imagine the reservoirs in CO are all fed by spring and mountain runoff...I remember swimming in Cherry Creek Res in July (non-wetsuit) and thinking how cold it was... What's the part that worries you the most? Hello, I hope everyone had a great weekend! I started my month off with an OWS at Boulder Reservoir, followed by an emergency speed boat ride to the pier where I sat and wheezed until someone brought me my inhaler. I'm not sure what brought it on--excitement, inhaling a wave, the cold, the smell of my wetsuit, the smell of the water, trying to swim too fast, or all of the above. I do know my wetsuit made me feel claustrophobic and I felt like I couldn't get a full breath in as it's rather tight across the chest (I did go into a store and have the owner tell me that yes, this was my size). I ended up buying a 2 piece wetsuit as it fit me better (top is a size bigger than the bottoms) and now I'm wondering if I can just wear the bottoms--they're bibjohns. Has anyone ever done this or seen anyone do this? I just think I'd be alot more comfortable assuming it's not too cold to do that. There's just nothing more disturbing to me than the feeling that I can't breathe. I'm planning on at least 5 OWSs before my first triathlon now, so I should be able to blow my swimming challenge out of the water However, until I can do this, I'm very nervous about June 15th (first ever tri). |

Has anyone ever done this or seen anyone do this? I just think I'd be alot more comfortable assuming it's not too cold to do that. There's just nothing more disturbing to me than the feeling that I can't breathe. I don't imagine there'd be anything wrong with wearing bibjohns. I guess it depends on how 'lowcut' they are in the front. Ahem...this wouldn't be too much problem for guys, but for gals, I don't know if this would create a 'scoop' that would give you a little 'drag.' I'm planning on at least 5 OWSs before my first triathlon now, so I should be able to blow my swimming challenge out of the water However, until I can do this, I'm very nervous about June 15th (first ever tri). Good idea on the 5 OWS. I had claustraphobic issues when I 1st swam in my wetsuit. A few things that have helped me: 1. Try to 'blow out' all of the CO2 in your lungs. I was finding when I 1st swam in my wetsuit, I was getting 'too much' air and hyperventilating. If you just keep your head in the water a little longer and blow out that CO2 and keep exhaling until you can't anymore THEN take a breath, it should make the rest of your swim a little more relaxed. 2. SLOW DOWN. When you're in a wetsuit, gliding is no issue. You can float without working to keep your hips/legs up. When you feel yourself getting winded, just slow down and glide as long as possible. Keep those arms out in front of you as long as possible, and slow your kick down as well. Usually only takes me about 5 slow strokes before I get my wind back... Really the key is to feel comfortable in the water. Swim out a ways and just 'hang out' 'upright.' I did this with a friend a few years ago. We swam out until we couldn't touch bottom anymore, just floated upright in the water and tried to 'force' ourselves to sink. Took a lot of effort. The wetsuit (even a sleeveless) gives you quite a bit of bouyancy. Once I figured out it was pretty difficult to 'sink,' it took a lot of the 'freak' factor out of it. Good luck...hang in there...of course take this info with a grain of salt...I'm not exactly in your situation...I don't have asthma...or at least I don't think I do... I'm guessing you got the Desoto 2 piece. I've used just the bibjohn and have no problems at all. I actually feel more comfortable without the top. |
