That's huge.  Nice work.

I'm one week in to my serious calorie counting phase to get to race weight.  I may write more about it.  There are ups and downs to the whole thing...

I usually pick a CD and blast it over the sound of my wind trainer.  I finally bought some headphones that work with my Musiq phone (it has the smaller 2.5mm jack), so now I can run through my mp3s.

First swim in SIX MONTHS today.  It was somewhat humbling, but an excellent starting point for a great year.

Wow.  6 months?  Good work getting back in there.  Were you nervous or aprehensive at all?

So question for you guys... i was riding on a trainer yesterday and it took me almost 30 minutes to get my heartrate up to 80% (>148bpm based on my age).. is that normal.. seems a bit slow.. i wasn't ballz out but was definitely hitting it hard...

Couple things there.  How did you find your 80%?  Based on age?  That may not be the best way to do it, to be honest.  Sounds like your '80%' my be too high, so it was hard to get there unless you are really pushing.  (however 148 is middle of my Z2).

I would suggest one of two things...  Either go by RPE and forget HR alltogether OR if you want to go by HR, then use one of the methods to determine your LT by field testing.

I can tell you more on both of those if needed.

hagakure - 2009-01-24 4:37 AM Just wondering what you guys listen to on the long runs. I'm on the lookout for new entertainment. I have been listening to this Ironman podcast recently. It's not bad they have had recent interviews with Macca, Chrissie, Mark Allen, Dave Scott and Simon Lessing. http://www.ironmantalk.com/Podcast.html

I have been thinking of grabing some podcasts, but usually just stick to my usual playlists I make on Itunes.  Just music most of the time.

I don't usually make playlists, I just set my player to random.

I have but three requirements.  Loud, fast, and heavy.

I had a Mid Long Run the other weekend and thought I would try an Audio Book (treadmill...)  I didn't look forward to it, but it actually made the first 45 minutes fly by!   Typically, I am more of a random playlist type with the playlist set by BPM... 80 for long and easy... and 84 BPM for harder workouts

Audio books are good.  I had a "play poker better" book and it really helped take my mind away from what I was doing.

Third day of my rest week and so far I have only done one 55 min run, no swim or bike yet. I really needed a break. I noticed that I was struggling to maintain run pace last week. Masters swim tonight.

Thought I would share.

Gonna be a rough week for me, workout-wise. I took Monday off, to recover from the weekend (as usual). Leaving tomorrow morning for a funeral in Florida, back late Thursday. I'll take my running stuff and try to sneak one in, bike is pretty out of the question in my parents' car.

I've been doing pretty well training for this time trial, getting a little nervous the closer I get to race day.

Did trainer ride tonight.. was able to get to 80% at the 20 minute mark .. which is about 10 minutes faster than last time.. probably pushed myself harder this ride than last week.. but still seems a bit long... hopefully i can train myself up...

EZ Swim this morning, pool was empty other than the "normal" pre-resolutioner crowd.  (sad to see so many drop so quick... could be an economy thing though?  I would think Gym memberships would be first to go!)  Tonight, I have an hour ride on the Computrainer!  (which by the way, I have to rave about their customer service... had an issue with the Cadence pick up, they quickly responded with some actions which I did with no result and immediately, they sent a replacement in the mail!!!!!  )    Have a GREAT day everyone!

Transitions?

I was watching Xterra Championship I had Tivoed. I was wondering about transition from the swim to run. Some used a small tub to rinse their feet before slipping on their bike shoes. Wet, bare feet would bug me. For a sprint length tri would it be a waste to dry your feet and throw on a pair of socks?

The small tub seems to be an option some people use.  Maybe the xterra has a rocky or sandy swim exit?

I have never used one.  If I feel the need to clean my feet, I would do what a lot of others do.  Have spare water bottle to rinse your feet.  If you stand on a towel, you can get most of the water off.

To be honest, I'm a sock guy.  I always put them on in T1.  I figure that I will have to put them on eventually, so the time loss is going to happen in T1 or T2.  I practiced without socks on time, and ended up trashing my feet.  BTW, even with the socks AND not having my shoes cliped in (I also put them on in T1), my transition times are always top 20%.

If I was doing a sprint, I might do things differently, but probably not.

In my limited exposure to race Transition, i find i lose less time at the begining of the bike by putting bike shoes on in transition instead of leaving them clipped on and putting me feet in them while riding. I do practice a ton of transitions at my house before i race, on and off the bike, i do an awesome flying dismount and leave my shoes in the pedals in T2.

I never race in socks, although so far I have only done sprints. I practice all my bricks sockless and have never had an issue. I am going to try leaving shoes on the bike this year to save T1 time. Flying dismounts and T2 times are fine but I felt slow last season with T1.

I'm not a fan of socks either. Usually right out of the swim, after I peel off the wetsuit, I stand on a small towel I have set up. As I'm bent over, quickly rub them off and slip on my bike shoes and then I'm in an up position....I just feel since I'm down peeling off the wetsuit around my ankles, might as well, stay they and put my shoes on....but no socks.

Now going from bike to run; I've done both socks and socks off. I've only done sprints so my theory: hot days no socks/cold days socks.......but I live in WI too

P.S. this P90X is kicking my butt! AND.....my nutrition is still in check! So far so good!

Now, next weekend, some friends want me to go out to celebrate birthdays....I'm going to have to resist excessive drinking.....seriously trying to think about the calories instead of the buzz.......at least for the next few months.

Just bear in mind that alcohol is one of the main food stuffs. It's mostly water anyway and the rest is just nutrients.

I am seriously thinking that I need the calories from beer to suppliment my training diet. When I have a week or two off, the weight falls off me. (which I guess is the general idea)

I don't think I could handle a birthday party sober when everyone else was drinking!

Just done a mini tri for todays training. It went reasonably well despite a crowded pool and gale force winds to ride and run in. I feel in better shape now that I did middle of last season!

I hope everyone has a good weekend!  I'm going to deal with a blow to my job (pay cut and reduced hours), but no big deal - I hope...

That just one more day to be able to do long rides and runs!  Hooray!!!!!
