tribesman - 2009-01-17 10:46 PM  I attended a "trainer party" with my coach and fellow team members and met Sandy (swise) there! It was a fun, productive session. I like group sessions. Tony

Was this just an informal get together? I hate spinning classes mostly because I can't use my own bike. I haven't heard of any gyms that allow you to bring your own bike and trainer for a training session.

very informal -- about 7 bikes/trainers set up in someone's living room. A great workout w/a group I would never likely be able to keep up with out on the road w/o slowing them down.

Sandy is being disingenuous.  She was dropping the hammer on us during this session.  Most of the guys were begging for mercy while Sandy was rolling out.

Great job!

Tony didn't do too bad either.  :P

I liked the fact that we all had the same workout and intervals. It kept everyone on the same page and we could help motivate each other. We did some fun yelling, especially when we had to hold a z4!

Ian, you can do this with friends in a basement or living room as we did but I recommend putting towels down, opening the windows, and turining on a fan. It will help!

tribesman - 2009-01-17 10:46 PM Hey gang, I want to share some good news regarding one of our team members. Ian (theiframe) had a great race last month at the Virginia Highlands Christmas 5k. He went 19:59! Way to go Ian! Ian, I look forward to chasing you at the ING half marathon and still finishing about 5 minutes behind you  Tony

Ha thanks Tony! But I will not be able to keep that pace for 13.1 miles. My goal is to run sub 1:40. Where are you shooting for? Is anybody else running this race? It'd be a great place to meet and greet.

I have a similar time goal. What I recommend for this race is to get there at least 10-15 minutes BEFORE you think you need to be there. It is very crowded. I plan to "line up" with the 3:10 hr marathoners, even though I am running the half. It helps keep me on pace for the first 10k at least...

Hey team,

How is everyone's training going this weekend? I went and checked out "Bodies - The Exibition" here in Atlanta. It was amazing and I would recommend it.

Has anyone experienced this?

I saw it last year when I was in Houston. It's really cool. I also would encourage anyone who hasn't seen it to go and check it out. After this nasty weekend I'm really looking forward to the weather warming up again.

Hello Team,

I want to honestly say you all are doing great! We have been sharing thoughts and information for over a month now and want to see how we are doing overall. Are we going in the direction you had hoped for? Do you want more or less of something?

Additionally, I have topics for the TOTW (topic of the week) but would still like to hear from you all.

I end (my) weekend with a quote for you all:

"Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it."

Hello gang,

Just want to toss another resource your way. From the site, "U.S.A. Triathlon is the sanctioning authority for more than 2,000 diverse events, ranging from grassroots to high-profile races nationwide. The organization works to create interest and participation in a variety of programs, including camps, clinics, races and educational opportunities".

http://www.usatriathlon.org/

There's a lot of great information here if you have never checked it out. Let me know what you think!

Thanks,

Swimming question for all who swim TI style. I have the book, but I can`t find anything about when you pull. Where should your hand be in relation to your body? Mine are never in the same spot. Sometimes to the right of center, sometimes left, sometime in the center, how close to my body should the hand/forearm be to my body? Sometimes I go deep, and sometimes too close to my body. Anyone have the CD which they no longer need, I will buy it from you. Any answer would be a huge help as Im getting a little flustered at not being in the same position every stroke.

Thanks

I'm sure Tony or Dan can answer this one. I am not certain what the correct answer is so I'll keep my mouth shut. I will chime in to say though that you may want to see if your local pool has a swim coach that you can buy an hour from to evaluate your stroke. I did that last year and it really helped. The coach I went to gave me some great insight and things to work on. After a few months I did it again and she of course moved on to the next thing wrong with my stroke. Each time felt like I was starting over but her tips and suggestions made significant improvements once I put into effect. Someone who really knows what they are doing can spot issues and give great direction at how to correct.
I actually think I may be due for another session myself...

On a different note -- the granola bars are great! How much peanut butter do you guys add to each phase?

When your upper hand is about to enter the water, or is just in front of your head, or even with your elbow, then you pull your leading arm back.  I usually do it when my hand enters the water, as that is what I just described.

Also, and I'm still working hard on this, while you are actually "pulling" your hand back, the aim in TI is not to use that to push water back, but merely to move your arm back.  Instead you should be "pushing" forward with the upper hand.  It's strange, but if you concentrate more on pushing forward and try to forget what your "pulling" arm is doing, it starts to work after a while.

I would also recommend you get the DVD.  I was working out of the "Swimming for Triathletes" book and while I had most of it "right" there were a few things that were off, which became apparent when I watched the DVD.

Hope this helps!

I agree that this is a great group! I have been on other mentor lists in the past year that went way off path and lost purpose. You are doing a great job of starting a discussion and keeping it on task until it naturally moves on, while also allowing other questions and topics to be intermixed and addressed. Keep it up!

Comparison

Thanks Steve and nice chart! I actually use the first one you list, the Polar 625. I love the footpod, cadence, and speed sensor. It is water proof too so I can swim with it and all my data is on one device. Tony

Thanks Tony!  I have the S625 also and like it, just wish it had GPS.  Still trying to get a good calibration on the foot pod though.  The problem I really have is that I'm doinig some bike training indoors and in the evenings now and I want to track mileage.  I found a V3 on eBay for $125 - it's shipping out today.  I was surprised at how much the Suunto does - I want to explore that further, but I also would rather spend $700 on other things.

Yes, GPS would be a nice function! I too want to track mileage indoors and am simply estimating. Thanks, Tony

Update on the V3: it's working great!  HRM and cadence are built-in, works on the rear wheel, digging it. Only prob is the buttons are hard to press.

Nate,

I first taught myself to swim with TI also. All I did for 8 weeks in the pool was TI. I watched the video and used the drill cards, then practiced. I might not recommend the 8 week approach but it helped me.

The good TI videos have apparently have been pulled from the main TI site. However, check these out. I met Dave Scott and he is a very knowledgeable and humble guy. What I am told from my swim instructor is to lengthen my arm straight out, never crossing the center line. I then pull more toward my chest vs. a downward motion. I then "clear" my hips and push past them.

Dave Scott showing swim stroke:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYt8x_7uL48

Drills: (I do these too. I call the 10x10 "Kicking on side" or KOS and do 25 yards on one side and 25 yards on the other)

http://video.about.com/swimming/Learn-How-to-Swim-Faster-.htm

I'm working on an extra copy of the CD too

Make sense?

Sandy is very correct in stating the help that even one swim lesson can accomplish.  I've had 2 stroke analysis sessions and have gained tons of knowledge from it.  You'd be amazed as to what you think you are doing and what you are actually doing.  If you have access to a video camera and a friend, have them video tape you swimming.  It does't have to be underwater.  Just from the side of the pool and watching you go down the lane.

Not to introduce any drama into the thread, but I am not a fan of TI unless you are just learning to swim.  The drills are great, don't get me wrong but once you get a feel for the water, you have outlived it's usefullness.  IMHO.  Again, lots of people have different thoughts on TI and I am NOT a swim coach.    So remember that YMMW (your mileage may vary).

Nate,

Glad you liked the videos. There are several good ones out there so do a couple of searches and check them out.

Regarding lessons, I found that if I purchased a package deal of say 3-4 lessons, it was less expensive. Also, if you do them with another swimmer or even a group, the price may drop too. I have done all of the above and find individual lessons helped me the most. I too have had my stroke analyzed/video taped and learned A LOT about my stroke!

Hey Team,

I hope all is well this week! I know it is more "end of the week" but I want to toss additional topics your way. With it being winter and all, our attire is different than say what we will train in over the summer. With that said, let's discuss clothing. Additionally, now is a great time to discuss time management in order to form those habits that will help make us sucessful the rest of the year. Also, with less daylight now, safety is a bigger concern. I know it is really 3 topics, but let's give it a shot.

* Attire
- Is layering or big and bulky the way to go?

* Time management
- A huge concern for triathletes, but life becomes "easier" when we plan

* Safety
- Mostly riding and running, but swimming counts too!

Let's hear your thoughts!!
