Subject: Modifying Swim Workouts
nuttysami123 - 2009-04-12 2:39 PM
lastcall2003 - 2009-04-12 1:36 PM Sam, you're on the table, and I think all the links should be working

Whew!

Thanks Beth!! I have a question for you about the swim workouts in a binder. I have that nice little book and I find it very intimidating because I am only swimming 1100-2000 yds in any swim workout. I haven't found a workout in the book less than 2000 yds. Do you swim the full distance in that book or do you modify them to fit your time schedule? I typically swim on my lunch hour 2x's a week and am currently following a Matt Fitzgerald plan.
Happy Easter to everyone who celebrates! My hellacious bike ride is done for the day. It was really really windy here in the corn fields of Indiana!

I totally hear what you are saying about the distances.  You can easily modify a lot of them by just eliminating a few sets.  For example, if there is a set in the middle swim that is repeated twice, just do it once.

If i'm modifying a workout to shorten it, I take a look at the components, and generally modify the middle swim portion.  Sometimes I'll also take a little out of the Warm up or Cool down if they seem a little long.

One of the things that I really like about the swimplan.com plans is they are also based on level of experience, beginner, intermediate, etc

it's very easy to get a nice workout in the exact range you are swimming in.

I just put my workout in a freezer side baggie so I can have it on the side of the pool.  No way could I remember.

Hope that helps

Love, love love the swim plan.com. I can hardly wait to use the first workout it gave me. Thanks, Beth. I'm off to do my long run of the week -- an hour. I've been making a lowfat chocolate cake for Easter dinner and procrastinating the run -- or delaying my gratification from how much I love to run! Take your pick. :-)

I did a 3 mile run before we started cooking, eating and drinking. The wind was blowing 16 miles an hr from the
southeast. Ran into the wind and back. The tailwind was awsome! Dinner is done now and kids are gradually leaving. A mixed blessing to be sure. Now there's wine to be had. It is a holiday.Wink

Subject: bravado, or realistic goal?
OK Manatees, my first question - so something I've been throwing around in my mind for a couple weeks ... I need some advice.

I have a deferred entry into an Olympic distance this year - it's the first weekend in August. It's a good race, I'm comfortable with the venue as it's where I regularly train (Shawn - it's Sri at Elk Lake if ur curious) ... I've deferred this entry for TWO years now (2007 was injured and couldn't race, last year didn't race at all) ... this is their 30th Anniversary year and my last chance to make good on my race entry.

Do I have time to get ready? I've only done Sprints before, but have done the bike and run portions in Olympic distance on relay teams (at this same race, coincidentally) and regularly do 10K running races ... I've let my swimming and cycling go, but prior to my recent Achilles injury had kept up with the running.

I do plan to finish my Sprint on May 24, I'm sure I'll be DFL but that's ok by me - I just want to get across that finish line. I'm also looking at another Sprint at the end of June ...

My question is: Does that give me enough time to jump up to the Oly distance by Aug 2? Or is this just bravado from having just watched Clearwater 70.3 on tv?

As an aside: I have my training plan set for the next 6 weeks, and I will be swimming 3 times per week, cycling 2-3 times per week, running 2-3 times per week, and doing 3-4 yoga classes (as that's my job). Fridays will be my days off, and there will be no exceptions with this plan.

I'm pretty stubborn when I put my mind to something.

Tr, I think you can do it. You're gonna have to focus on training for the swimm & bike, but you have time. Just focus on being able to finish. don't set a specific time goal. Find a trianing plan. Sounds like you have about 16 weeks to train. Your run is already there. Think of your swim as a warmup. Practice hard on your bike and maintain your run base. You go girl!!

So if anyone besides me cares ... Canada lost to Scotland in the end ... disappointing. It was one of those games of strategy in which 3 hours of back and forth comes down to one shot - which ended up being in Scotland's favour.

(Curling is kind of like a cross between chess and shuffleboard on ice, for those who don't know)

Yet - we still love our Canadian Team. Vancouver 2010 is not too far away. Go Canada Go!

I think you absolutely have enough time to train for an Oly

I would suggest that you decide which one is your 'A' race - which one do you want to do the best in, and plan your training around that

let us know......

hi everyone.  woke to the sounds of my three sons bickering.  mommy bliss.

its spring break, and thankfully this week (and next) are taper/brick weeks.  it will be less challenging to fit in my workouts with kids home from school (through tues) w the times being so low.

a shortie swim for me today - just 25 mins - im gonna use one of the new plans i downloaded from swimplan.com  (super silly excited about that site)

then tomorrow will be the first of four bricks i'll do over the next two weeks before i do my mini on the 26th.  thats coming up quick.  woosh.

its looking like we'll have quite a few bikerideable days here.  perfect.  the kids are heading out w my brother to our hunting/fishing camp this weekend, and my husband is gonna join me on my long ride come saturday.  totally sweet.

hope everyone has a wonderful day/trng-wise or otherwise.

Good morning, Manatees!

Everyone has gone home now and DH has gone to work. I'm alone at out beach house to clean up. I'll be doing plenty of laundry & dishes from dinner yesterday. Then I'll pack up & drive home.

I start my reverse taper today. That means a 20 minute bike ride for today. It'll be the first bike ride since my race last week. This will be my last easy week for a while. I've decided that my A race will be next year's NOLA 70.3. This year, my goal was really just to finish. Next year, I'll have a time goal. Hopefully, it'll be under 7 hrs. This summer I'll do a few sprints just for fun & to get tri experience. There will be one in mid June, mid July, and a mini in on Aug 1. I may throw in a few 5ks & group bike rides too. Then there's a half mary in Feb that I mentioned before. I want to do that to help me train for NOLA.

This is my training plan idea: I'm gonna start the intermediate No Fluff maintenance plan next Monday. After that 12 wk plan is done, I'll do run focus and bike focus. Then I'll repeat the No Fluff and move into a 16 wk HIM plan. I really want to sharpen up my times in all three disciplines.

How does this sound, Manatees? No fluff looks intense, but I have a problem with pushing myself when it comes to speed.

Godd morning Manatees!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I will not be around much (if at all) until Thursday.  I am headed to NYC later today for work, and will be there until Thursday.

I have a ton of stuff to take care of before I head to the train station.

Happy Training, and I'll catch up when I get back.  I'll do my best to review all the posts, but knowing this group, that could prove to be quite a task - if there's anything in particular that anyone wants to ask me, send me a PM as well as posting, so I'm sure to see it.

Have a great week!

Your training plans sound well thought out.  The "no fluff" does look intense and I would be curious to see if it does help you improve your speed.  I am so impressed that you did the NOLA HIM this year.  Very Inspiring!

so glad you loved the swimplan!

can you share the recipe?

 The family liked it!

Sure, here's the recipe:  Weight Watchers Chocolate raspberry cake (mock Applebees cake recipe)

Ingredients:
- 1 Pillsbury Reduced Sugar Devil’s Food Cake Mix
- 1 can of diet Pepsi
- 1 1/3 cups Water
- 8 oz. reduced fat cream cheese
- 3 tsp baking Splenda
- 4 tbsp Fat Free Cool Whip
- 1/2 cup raspberry jam

Directions:
Mix cake mix, water and can soda. Beat with mixer for two minutes. Pour into 2 round cake pans that have been sprayed with non-stick spray on bottom only. Bake as directed on box. Turn out onto cooling rack and let cool completely. For frosting mix cream cheese, cool whip and Splenda. Mix until smooth. When cake is cooled spread a thin layer of cream cheese on bottom layer and place other layer on top, then spread remaining frosting on top. Heat raspberry jam and drizzle over the top of cake. Cut into 12 inch servings and enjoy. Makes 12 servings.

Serving size is 1 slice (1/12 of total cake) Each serving = 4 points

Tr--Totally agree that you CAN do the oly!!

Cathy -- You did NOLA!! You're amazing. I'll go read your RR. I semi followed the no fluff plan for a while and it is a good one. I think it will improve your speed since there's more speed work (intervals, repeats, etc.). Or at least that's what I found.
