New user 39 Syracuse | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread New to triathlons here as well. I haven't done a race yet but boy am I glad that Syracuse landed this half ironman. It was the reason that I decided to go into this sport. And I am loving it already. Looking forward to many more years and races to come. But first I have to get through the next week and a half. Looking forward to some tapering. Not afraid but man, am I excited to get this show on the road. It's like waiting for a trip to Disney World. Acutally, I'm off to vaca in FLA the day after!!! |

I am wondering if it will be a bike bottle or more of a water bottle like those sold at the 7-11. I tried to find it on their web site but no luck. Thanks! |

The other 2 Ironman branded 70.3 I have done, they handed out water/Gatorade bottles like you buy in 7-11. My guess bike bottles get a bit expensive. |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread Now that we are about 10 days away, I thought I would bring up a the dinner idea again. Do people want to get together Sat night for dinner? I was thinking 5 - 5:30ish at Spaghetti Warehouse, but I am open to anything. I am happy to call them and let them know we are coming, but would like to get a head count. |

Champion 6539 South Jersey | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread I will pass on dinner -- I always eat my own thing the night before a race (specific brand of pasta, sauce, chicken, etc....I'm crazy like that). I hope to meet many of you there at some point over the weekend! Lauren |

4 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread Yes, first 70.3 and pretty excited for it. My only tri of the year. I was happy to have visited, biked the course one week, learned my lessons much as Tigerlight described, returned a week later and had a much better ride in spite of double the wind. Ran most of the run section a month ago but it looks like in the athlete packets we received that the back 2/3rds of the course has changed significantly and now continues down Jamesville Rd onto Erie Blvd to get across town. That's fine, but was unexpected and probably worth a drive upon arrival. Pretty little lake, didn't get to swim in it - instead I have gotten out of the pool and into Chesapeake Bay for some OWS practice down here in MD. After sucking in turbid salt water, getting thumped by waves and stung by more jellyfish than I want to remember in recent weeks, yes, I'm ready for some nice freshwater swimming in Jamesville. It looked quite clear when I was there. Happy for taper time now. Safe travels everyone and best of luck on race day! |

Member 308 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread As mentioned above it appears the run course has changed. The original map had elevations which appears to mostly downhill (which is nice :@), but the current run route does not have an elevation chart. Is the course similar to previous in that it is downhill or is it different? |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread I would assume that since the run originates and ends at the same points that the final elevation numbers would be about the same. There might be more variation but the final 1% decline should remain constant. |

New user 39 Syracuse | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread I just mapped the run out on map my run and it shows a 75 foot ascent and a 364 desecent with the top incline being 1%, top decline being 2%. So the run looks nice. Funny thing about runs which start and finish at the same elevation like someone stated earlier. A one percent decline can me nothing. Take the mountain goat run. Same start and finish but lot o hills in between. This course looks nothing like that one. And for that I am thankful. Here is a link to the map I made: http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/ny/syracuse/491128413193051593 My only comments/questions about it will be if the roads will have a lane closed or open to traffic. Erie blvd is a 4 lane 40mph road and won't be fun dealing with traffic on a midday Sunday if it is fully open to traffic. Plenty of shopping centers with people turning. But good parking and viewing there as well for spectators. I'm looking forward to hearing what everyone plans to have family do at the transition area. Guide says no traffic our of park lots until last biker off course. |

Guide says no traffic our of park lots until last biker off course. It's usually that way. Also, isn't the finish line 13.1 miles from transition? By the time folks do their post-race walk around, eat, etc., and get back to Transition, most people will prob be off the bike. The packet didn't include any spectator information (i.e., how they will get from transition to the finish line). |

New user 39 Syracuse | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread That's what I am talking about, the family leaving transition to get to the finish area. We'll have no problems getting back to our bikes after the race. But if the families want to watch bike end and run start, then go to the finish, the might be waiting a long time depending on how fast you are. The part in the guide that concerns me is the no driving out of the park lots until last biker is off the course. That is like what, 6 hours in with some waves starting out swimming at 7:30ish, that's 1 to 1:30pm? Another question I have about the guide. It says to obey all traffic signs. Does this mean during a race we must stop at a stop sign if there are no cars coming? |

Member 308 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread I took it to mean if we are riding/running around pre-race? Takes to the person who put up the maymyride, saw the elevation map of the new run course and it appears to be similar. A nice descent which I have no complaints about :@) |

4 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread I think I'll be directing family to wait at the finish line as they usually want to see the end of the race. Given it's a 2 lane road in and out of the Jamesville area, and there are thousands of people, and that rule about roads closed until the last bike comes in, I don't see it as very probable for spectators of most racers to see the start, transitions AND the finish. Maybe they'll have cameras and jumbo screens in one place or the other so spectators can sort of be in two places at one time? |

Champion 6539 South Jersey | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread Sorry -- read your post quickly and must've misread. I had always assumed that there would be buses to take spectators from the transition area to the finish line, but I guess that's not that case . Maybe they will put out a spectator guide at some point. |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread CountryBoy1001 - 2010-09-10 1:24 PM Last question - how do they assign folks in wave starts? Pros then Age groups or some prediction about your finishing time (kind of like big highschool track meets did when I was a duffer).? Again, the packet material didn't say anything about such wave assignments so I'm curious. The waves will be by Age Group. Most AG's will probably have more than one wave. |

Champion 6539 South Jersey | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Syracuse : Official Thread I emailed the race directors to ask about how spectators are supposed to get from TA to the finish if they're not allowed to remove their cars from the park until after the last cyclist returns to transition. Hopefully I hear back. Also, I noticed the athlete food tent closes at 2:30. I am guessing swim waves will go from 7 - 7:30 or so. That's only 7 hours after the later waves start --- that's really cruel. This half isn't going to go nearly as well as my last. I am guessing I could be out there for 7 hrs. There had better be food there. Especially if my family can't get to the finish line to bring me some food and warm, dry clothes (looks like a high of 65F on race day -- we will be freezing at the finish). They used the generic IM athlete guide. Some of the info in there doesn't really apply to us. They did update times, etc. |

I read on the Web site at one point that there's a designated swim time (I think it was late Sat afternoon), but I can't find it now. |
