Socks - 2011-04-08 10:42 AM Good luck everyone.  Will pray form minimal wind for you.  Its been ridiculous here in south Texas with winds 45-50 MPH sustained.  I seriously would not be able to keep my bike upright here.

umm, yea, really didnt need to know that!! Wink

National weather service forecast for Galveston on Sunday:

Sunday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 75. Breezy, with a south wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

It looks like we'll be racing in 73F-75F temps, 17mph SSE winds with gusts up to 23mph, very cloudy skies (95% cloud cover), and 90-100% Humidity.   20% chance of rain after 12pm so it may be a rainy run (which may dictate my shoe choice as I need something that drains well).

Forecast is changing daily but I sure hope the humidity goes down a little bit...

Good luck to everyone racing! I am jealous, but my time for an HIM will be later this year. I hope everyone has a great race!

Regarding weather forecast vs actual conditions: I haven't done the bike course down there, but I have spent a lot of nights and early mornings on West End beaches. For fishing plans, we always add 5-10mph to the wind forecast, and we're seldom disappointed. You may get some light/variable winds early on, but it will live up to the forecast, and more, as the day goes on.

Oh, and don't expect the humidity to be any lower than forecast either. No quarter.

Have fun!

It looks like they aren't letting anyone swim anywhere on the course like they have in the past. If anyone has any ideas for getting in the water on the bay side please let me know. I don't think swimming in the gulf side would be of much benefit.

We are running into the same problem. Planning on just pooling tonight and finding a spot tomorrow after the sprint. If anyone has suggestions, please post. GPS coordinates would be great, too, for us non-locals.

I am racing in the sprint tomorrow. I did 3 sprints last year and this is my first one for this year.  I am a surfer and have a wetsuit. Is there a difference between the wetsuit I wear for surfing than the ones everyone will wear for the triathlon.  I know one difference is the knee and arm pads.  I just want to make sure that wearing my surfing wetsuit will give me the same bouincy advantage that a tri wetsuit.

Thanks,

Surf wetsuits have a completely different fit and mobility. Triathlon wetsuits allow better shoulder motion than surf wetsuits. Additionally, wetsuits of both types have different thicknesses. Many triathlon wetsuits have a 5mm torso and legs with 1 or 2 mm arms and shoulders. Surf wetsuit often don't vary in thickness. If a surf wetsuit is all you have, give it a go. You are right about the knee and elbow padding being absent in tri wetsuits, but the outer most layer is also different allowing a slicker interface between the wetsuit and the water. At this point, there isn't much you could do about it anyway. Best of luck tomorrow.

SOmeone died at a pre-race gatorade swim at one of the ironmans, hence gatorade is no longer a sponsor.  They got sued I think and therefore they are not taking responsibility for people swimming at any venue.  Officially you arenot allowed to do practice swims at the venues.  At IMFL you can hardly keep people off a beach and prevent them from swimming when the beach is that large.

Good luck tommorrow everyone.  May the wind be always at your back, the current be pushing you forward and teh rain stay away

Congrats to all!  Hope your race yesterday went well.

Anyone find a link to a complete set of results?  Currently, I can only access the first 100 of each age group.

Great race...learned a lot since it was my first!!!

However, very sad that the results are listed for everyone.  It seems like they stopped the tracking or posting of times after a certain cutoff point.  I finished (within the time limits) but it doesn't say I did :-( According to the results page, only 10 people in my age group finished and 56 of us DNF (well, some of them have times for some of their run loops but there are 3 of us that don't even have that.)  Hopefully it is just a fluke and it is something they are working on fixing.  I know the timing mat was reading me, I heard it beep everytime I crossed and when I crossed the finish line, the announcer was able to call my name.  Hopefully I will eventually get an actual time since I forgot to stop my watch when I crossed.

Some of the bike mechanics talked to my friend who got 2 flats and said that more than half of the flats were caused by some tacks on the road.  They think they were thrown out by some rebel kids Saturday night after they swept.

I had heard the same.  We found a small nail in my wife's front tire when taking the bike back to the car.  We figured it slowly deflated on the way in

That's pretty sad.  I was thinking that there were a TON of flats out there.  I probably saw someone every few miles fixing one.

Well, I wonder where that happened?

I hope the rest of you had a great race! Mine came to an end at mile 23.5 on the bike course. I am not sure how, because there is now about 30 minutes of my life that I cannot account for, but one second I was looking at the cell tower thinking how really awesome it was about to become with that tailwind, and the next I was staring into the face of an EMS guy. A nice little ride in the red bus to UTMB, cat scan and xrays (both negative, thank you Lord) and a few stitches in my upper lip. I did manage to make it back from the hospital in time to watch some of the later run finishers.

So if any of you happened to see what happened to a slow fat guy wearing a white jersey and riding a P2, puhleeze let me know. I just want to know what I missed :-)

Again, hope all of you enjoyed your race. Now I am DEFINITELY signing up for Kansas!

I have to ask...... does anyone know what was up with the women who was running in her wetsuit? I was shocked to see her running by with her wetsuit down around her waist and the arms tied so they weren't bouncing around??????

Nobody could figure it out????

glad to hear you are ok. when my wife and i were leaving the transition area at about 3pm with her bike there was a safety worker bringing a bike back into transition and i heard him tell the volunteer that it belonged to someone who wrecked on the course and had to go get treated. may have been your bike.
