pmruns - 2011-11-02 10:49 AM I'm planning on doing the Ocala, FL HITS series Half in late March.  First swim with the gators...trying not to think about it.

Gators only bite if you swim with a "rat" dog.

Noted...leaving rat dogs at home.  Smile

I should have written:

Swim with a bulldog---they take the bite out of a gator.  (yes I went to grad school at UGA).

mb1530 - 2011-11-02 12:31 PM I'm utilizing the Be Iron Fit training as well and I'm in the same boat when it comes to finding Olympic or Half Iron distances to use as training.  Apparently no one wants to do triathlons when it is raining and cold.  Go figure.  I am going to simulate the races on my own.

I also will be utilizing the Be Iron Fit Plan.  There is a HIM in Charleston (TryCharleston) on April 21st that fits almost perfectly with the plan.  Should be reasonably warm that time of year in Charleston.  There's also the White Lake Half in North Carolina a couple weeks later.

Are you all doing any "tune up" races next spring?  My plan (Fink's IronFit) calls for an olympic the last weekend in March and a half the last weekend in April.

There aren't any races around here that are more than pool-swim sprints during that time frame, so unless I want to travel overnight for Galveston (4-1, so too early per the plan for a half) or New Orleans (4-22), I may just have to simulate a race on my own.

That, or there is a race (1 mile swim, 40 mile bike, 9 mile run) on 5-20.  I think that may be a little too close to CdA, though.

I plan to simulate my own half-ironman sometime in May.  We could all simulate on the same day and compare experiences/lessons learned/heartbreaks/successes?

That's a great idea!

I am in. The swim will have to be in a pool as the water will not be warm yet as we have discussed above.

Remind us when you do it. I am definitely in. I live in Hawaii, so would need to make a mainland trip to get anything longer than an Oly. A "Virtual 1/2IM" would be perfect. Great idea.

Hello..

I've not posted for a wee while and thought i would re-join the chat and such.. (this may be a tad long and boring for some but gonna give some background to my year here)

So, started the year 210lbs (5'8) heavy, now floating around 180/185 still too heavy for my liking.. had never done a triathlon but this year accomplished a Sprint, an Olympic, and a HIM (Beach 2 Battle).. great journey even with more than a few slips and lack of training but all of those have been with the goal of becoming an 'Ironman'.. and that is now the next hurdle.

Been lurking and still reading and now really starting to get the buzz for CdA '12..

OK, self-intro over.. hope to enjoy and learn much on this adventure and get to know a few folk too along the way..

Cheers,

Donnie

It is official, I have registered to join my wife on the line to finish the Ironman CDA for my first Ironman. My wife will be doing her 3rd Iron and looking to qualify possibly for Kona. I will be happy to just endure the event and finish before 17:00 hours. I am shooting for around 15 hours, but you just never know what will happen in a race like this. I using the Online Coaching here to help achieve my goal.

We found a nice lake home on Lake Coeur d'Alene to stay in for 5 nights, so we are going to have a nice vacation and race. I am wondering if the bike course is going to change or not. I have read so much about a change, but the maps still show the original bike course.

Oh well, 112 miles is going to hurt no matter.

All the best,

Bill in Minnesota (riding my trainer, as usual now)

I am in, this will be my first IM.  I worked bike and run station (pirate) this year, it was amazing.  I just need another week or two before my foot is healed up from a stress fracture before I get moving on winter training.

Hello to Bill in MN, Donnie, and smithe!

Not sure about the rest of you, but the fact that my training plan starts on 11/27 means this whole thing is starting to sink in!

I was just having the same conversation yesterday.  it seems like the race is in the distant future, but in reality, a lot of training plans are starting the the next month or so.

Hi,

I registered for CDA the day after 2011 race.  This will be my second IM and I am really looking forward to it.  I live in Medicine Hat Alberta Canada so the majority of my riding will be done on my trainer.  Looking forward to the support from this thread.  Have fun training everyone

Paula

11/27? What is that a 30 week plan? That's a long time to stay focused. I hope it has some good rest weeks built in. It does seem like its still a long way off.

Thanks for the "hello" dallas,

i have a countdown app on my phone set for my upcoming races, the "A" race of course being CdA.. only 222 days and sub 18 hrs (at time of posting).. haha.. whne it gets into the 180's is when i think it is going to get very real and feeling soon..

was out for a 9 mile run on saturday which went fine but then as i was peeling a hard boiled egg... BAM... muscle spams in my lower back and have barely been able to walk until today.. i realize there is still ages to go but my base is not spectacular.. but if im going to get problems best to get them now than later i guess..

Mallen: i wondered the same about how long is possible to stay focused and i was goping to speak to my coach about it, when will you be starting your plan?.. and what about for those of us who feel , as i do, that my base is not that siginifcant?

Runnergirl: hello, welcome to the CdA troop..

Docfish: what plan are you following?

I guess everyone is different, but I've always thought 30-weeks was a pretty standard IM training plan length.  10 weeks base, 10 weeks build, 7 weeks peak, 3 weeks taper... something like that.

Thanks for the welcome dallas. I am really excited to get going on my actual training plan, which is a ways off yet. Right now I am doing a lot of core and strength training while waiting for my foot to heal just a little more.

I'm not saying 30 weeks is wrong. It's just a long time to stay on a focused plan. I usually do 20 weeks which I think puts me somewhere near the end of Feb. Even with that I usually end up peaking at 18 weeks and just hanging on for 2 more. I guess I don't do a ton of base work in the actual plan. It's mostly build. I'm assuming you guys are using the be iron fit plan?

Lake Coeur d'Alene is ~50 million sq-mi in area.
Solar pool rings need 80% coverage to warm a pool in cold climates.
Each solar ring is 20 sq-ft in area.

I'm planning to bring 55 trillion solar pool rings to warm the lake before our swim.

Yeah everyone is different. I plan on 20 weeks as well, but I will be doing running races, adventuring racing etc before the 20 wks start. That being said, I'm also signing up for ironman Arizona which is 18 weeks from CDA. I will obviously take a break in between, but that's a long season. I'm using a top notch coach this year who will hopefully keep me focused and rested when needed.

I'm using the 30 week IronFit plan.  I agree it's a long time to stay focused, but I actually view the first 10 weeks as something of a recovery in preparation for the significantly more difficult 20 weeks that follow.  Most of the first ten weeks are actually a step back for me in terms of intensity (e.g. no speedwork) than what I would be doing on my own if I wasn't following a plan.
