You're comparing apples to oranges. You're saying `It takes a lot of work to be an elite baseball or basketball player!' while at the same time saying `It takes no work to be a back-of-the-pack triathlete.'

Yep.

I love triathlon so don't take this the wrong way, but the fact is, it takes WAY more practice to hit .300 in baseball or shoot 75% from the free-throw line than it ever does to be able to run a triathlon.  In fact, if it wasn't for swimming, virtually ANYBODY could spend a month or two and finish an event up to Oly distance....especially with all of the walking that goes on.

Again, I'm a fan of anyone who gets up off their arse and becomes active in triathlon or anything else......but I get why other athletes make fun of triathlon....and triathletes.

I'm a little late to this discussion, and I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I just wanted to point out that there were only 25 athletes in Major League Baseball in 2012, and there are only 90 athletes in the NBA this season.

OK....but I just want to point out that there are hundreds of thousands of athletes playing baseball and basketball and working to hit .300 and shoot 75% from the line, and it takes alot more practice than learning how to swim, ride a bike, and walk.

You are right about how hard it is.....thanks for helping me out.

Dude, do you not see the wrinkle in your argument? He is not helping you out and you are not helping yourself. You are not drawing an apples to apples correlation. If you were it would be elite participants compared to elite participants, or average to average, or sum total to sum total. You are comparing above average to at best sum total. Yes, almost anybody can swim, bike, and run and not almost anybody can hit 300 or shoot %75 free throws. But that leaves out all basket players who don't shoot %75 and all baseball players who don't hit 300. What I take from your argument is that some triathletes are not athletes and some baseball players are not athletes and some basketball players are not athletes. Sure, it's hard to excel at sports. Comparing those who excel to those who don't is pointless. Maybe it really is trolling.

Stop with the trolling crap already.  My origional point still stands.....it doesn't take much to swim/bike/run-walk.....it takes MUCH more practice to be proficient in other sports. Ours is just exercise....anyone can do it.  Not anyone can hit .300 in baseball....it's hard and takes a tremendous amount of practice.  Same with shooting 75%.  Triathlon is not hard, and doesn't even take much practice.

Everybody wants to be an "athlete"........completing a triathlon doesn't even get you close. I include myself.....I'm no "athlete" aymore, I just keep exercising enough to run a race here and there. How would that ever make me an "athlete"?  Geez....learning how to CATCH a ball is harder than learning to swim/bike/run-walk.  My kids could all swim/bike/run before they could ever catch a ball at a level that came even remotely close to proficient.

My kid and I were laughing over this thread last night.  He told me that he frequently gets into discussions at school with the other kids who play sports over which ones are harder and require the most skill.  He said it's always a fun argument/discussion (depending on your demeanor I guess).  My son thinks he's a stud athlete because he swims/bikes/runs fast.....I say, "whatever dude".  Laughing

You're right, it doesn't take much skill to swim, bike or run. But it also doesn't take much skill to swing a bat or heave a basketball into the air. You're comparing apples to oranges. You're saying `It takes a lot of work to be an elite baseball or basketball player!' while at the same time saying `It takes no work to be a back-of-the-pack triathlete.'

Hell, it takes alot of work just to be proficient at baseball, much less elite.  You can become proficient at running by being born.  I took my first strides, like you, without ever even practicing.

And I swung a bat back and forth for the first time without ever practicing.

But you couldn't hit the ball except by accident.

And babies fall down the first few times they take a step. Or try to run. And I STILL can't hit the ball, except by accident!

Exactly....not athletes.

Not yet. After some practice and work on their technique, then they can call themselves athletes. And so can the future baseball players.

My original argument had little to do with your opinion about athletes. My only issue with you Left Brain is that you make sweeping comments that are assumptive and a bit judgemental and cutting. I'm not even referring to only this thread. Why come to a triathlete forum to inform the triathletes they are not athletes? Thats pure .. something.... Which is why you are getting the troll badge right now LB.

Why would you have a laugh over this thread with your kids? Laugh at who?

Not something I'd ever discuss with my kids. I talk about sports in terms of doing one's best and good sportsmanship.

You belittle what they do.. hmm.. I wonder why they tease you  about your efforts? Even in good fun, I can't even fathom my son doing that to his dad about his cycling... would never happen.

And since parents model, I wonder what kids at school they belittle. Do they act like they are studs at school? Do they help the weaker swimmers? Encourage them?

Ask them that. I'm curious.

Wow... Laughing

My kids and I tease each other all the time.....it's hard not to as much time as we spend together riding, running, whatever.  They are funny and sometimes they think I'm funny.  I don't know, I've never seen any of their friends looking like they've beat down by my kids....I'll watch closer maybe?  There is usually alot of laughing going on....maybe I better make sure they aren't laughing at each other?  That would be horrible, right?  And, surely no body ever makes fun of my kids, they'd be crushed, wouldn't they?

Geez...talk about sweeping comments.....LMAO

Kate, I don't have to ask them.....I live with them. Laughing

I guess my filter is different than yours.  How does one go about being insulted on an internet chat forum?  I'm trying to imagine getting insulted by someone's opinion on any board.....sorry, I could never get there.

Hey, if you want to call yourself an athlete....knock yourself out! I won't be insulted because you don't agree with me....I promise.

I'm missing something...

Only a fraction of athletes can hit .300 in the majors, shoot 75% in the NBA, Rush for 2000 yards or more in the NFL, or have a scratch handicap playing from pro tees in golf...  But I would say everyone playing professional sports is an athlete.

Comparing the elite in professional sports to ALL triathletes is not the same thing.

Laughing

Laughing

I wasn't asking if they laugh with their friends.. and I didn't assume anything about your kids. I asked a bunch of questions based on your own comments.  And shared some of my thoughts.

You skipped by my main point and ignored it... Why make insulting comments about  triathletes on a triathlon forum?

I guess my filter is different than yours.  How does one go about being insulted on an internet chat forum?  I'm trying to imagine getting insulted by someone's opinion on any board.....sorry, I could never get there.

Hey, if you want to call yourself an athlete....knock yourself out! I won't be insulted because you don't agree with me....I promise.

Ok. whatever you say man. Thank you for not being insulted by my disagreement.

Only the ELITE triathletes can win in Kona or break 9 hours in an IM too.  Only ELITE runners can run sub 2:10 marathons.  But there are a HELL of a lot of triathletes that are athletes and can do better than most.  There are a lot of weekend warriors as well.

But there are a lot of weekend warrior baseball, golfers, and basketball players

Your not missing anything.  You got it.  There are also plenty of athletes at all ages and levels who can hit .300 in baseball and shoot 75%.  And absolutely, there are some people in triathlon who are athletes.  The rest are "weekend warriors" as you say.  Just "exercisers" as I say. Certainly no shame in either.  Count me as one!

HOWEVER....just because you play a sport, or run a triathlon, you are not automatically an athlete.  I never hear baseball players or even basketball players reffering to themselves as "athletes". (OK, never is a big word, so rarely).....but I constantly hear people who run triathlons refer to themselves and other participants as "athletes".  No, sorry, not by my way of thinking.

Hmm ... let's talk about pitching. Hitting .300 isn't hard if you're going up against a crappy pitcher. So if I can hit .300 against a crappy pitcher but not against a decent one, am I an athlete?

Maybe for 9 innings.....or until the pitcher gets yanked.....then you're just back to being the duffer you are.  You're small window of "athleteness" is gone.  Same as winning the local tri put on by the little sisters of the poor.....you podium....you are the champion,  now sit down, you big athlete.
