Happy Holidays, everybody! Well, I'm finally catching up with life again after a busy week before/after Christmas....

Nathan - I've got really tight ankles, too. For ankle stretches, I use this 6-foot long Gold's Gym stretching strap:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Gold-s-Gym-Stretch-Assist-Strap/21666179

I put the top of my foot through the end loop, add some tension, and flex 15 or 20 times, then repeat with the other foot. I usually I sit on the floor and stretch while I'm watching TV. I also use the same strap for general stretching, along with a foam roller. I'm constantly dealing with muscle tightness and soreness...

Catwoman - I'm running a half-marathon in February. I'm doing it mostly because it's a fun, scenic, festive event (the route goes through Golden Gate Park and along Ocean Beach in San Francisco). It also fits in well with my training schedule for my first HIM in June. I usually prefer HMs that have a certain "pizazz" factor, like the scenery, or the music (Rock N Roll Half-Marathon), or the people (Las Vegas RnR HM).

I experienced quite a wake-up call during my run last night. Because of my schedule, I usually run in the evenings. I always try and wear reflective clothing, run in well-lit neighborhoods, and stay on sidewalk or on the side of the road. Well, last night I got distracted looking at my watch and wandered further into the street than I intended. Bad timing. I almost got run over by a car. Ugh. I really need to pay better attention to my surroundings or I'm not gonna make it to 2014...

-Steve

EVENING ALL!

Well today was mostly running errands etc until 230 came around and DH said "LET'S GO!" Urgh, OK. So we went for a little 7 mile run around the neighborhood. Not bad - at least I got out of the house

Small pre new years party tonight. All I really want to do is curl up in my pjs until tomorrow

OH I'm currently taste testing energy bars. Does anyone have any particular brands they love? My only requirement is NO CHOCOLATE.

I'm currently trying Picky Bars and Hammer Nutrition Bars. On rides I normally just eat Cliff bars but they seem to be too heavy on a run. One thing I'm noticing about the other two is they use more oil which leaves the bars almost slimy (but not in an inedible way). Love to hear your thoughts.

MTBChic: I wish I could help with the food bars! I will only eat chocolate ones.

Got in a nice 7 mile run this morning with the ladies. One is a Hoka lover, the other just got a pair and is hoping to love them. They both have feet issues like I do, so if both of them are singing praises, I may try a pair!

After the intense reintroduction to the Xterra bike course yesterday and today's run, I'm feeling pretty sore. Just discovered I have a lovely, large bruise on my rear end from yesterday's fall. Ouch!

Hope your weekend is full of sweaty fun!

Looking forward to finally getting a bike tomorrow afternoon! The only thing I need to figure out is finding a roof rack that's less than $150 which can be used on an 05 Jeep Grand Cherokee as well as most Honda models between 2000-2005. I'm having to get a lift using my parent's car down to school and I hope to have a car of my own by the time I head back home for summer break.

Why the dual compatibility? I don't want to drop a ton of money on something that'll be used 2-3 times tops and then thrown out the window for something more useful. If I can carry over a good quality roof rack to a car of my own, I will be VERY happy about it.

Jason, Randy, and Kevin. Thank you. Makes sense I was perhaps looking for too much data off the trainer rides. I'm just starting. Only two sprints and and olympic distance under belt. While I was looking for improvement in training, I recognize the proof is in the races. I know I need patience, I just need it NOW!

Kevin, as far as Iggy. Your welcome. Word on the street here is that he had a girlfriend in town and needed to get out in a hurry. Who knows.

You may be able to get the bike in those vehicles without needing a rack. I am able to get my tri bike in a 2006 Honda Accord. I remove the front wheel, fold down the car's rear seat and then I am able to put the bike in through the trunk. (there is an opening between the rear seat and trunk with the seat folded down). I use a rack when traveling locally but like to have the bike protected when traveling out of town.

You can also lower the seat post on most bikes to make then easier to fit in a car. Just put a mark where the post was so you can return it to the correct position.

Won't be able to do that in this case. Three people are making the return trip in the Cherokee and the trunk will have some things in it. It won't be full, but it'll be more than enough to keep the bike out.

I do like the Bonk Breakers. The Almond Butter & Honey and the Coconut Cashew are tasty. They've got a variety of other fruity flavors (Apple Pie, Fig, Blueberry, etc.) that I've tasted and was quite pleased with, too.

No workout for me today except some Yoga and foam rolling. It's REST DAY and I'm going to enjoy it. One of my oldest friends (met her when we were both 17 in the late 80s) drove down from Ft. Wayne to spend the month with her horse in the area, so I'm off to spend some time with her today. Haven't seen her in over 5 years.

X2 on keeping your bike in the car. You'd be amazed at what you can fit in a car.

Longest post op run today to cap the year off. Ran 7 miles in an hour with my sister. We had to stop multiple times because of dogs. We're visiting my parents in East Texas for the holidays. We have a route that we jokingly call the Tour de Tyson because it goes by several chicken houses.

I like Lara bars but don't use them on the bike or run. I've moved to liquid nutrition only for races and training. I love and use UCAN products.
I also only use nutrition for bike rides over 1.5 hours. I don't eat before any morning workouts or really anything specifically prior to a workout. Mainly I just try to meet all of my nutritional needs (and more) through frequent meals throughout the day.

How can I minimize the amount of space taken by the bike in the trunk?

Really nice day here today in Memphis, partly sunny, mild in the 50's.
Had an enjoyable 10 mile run, my long run for the week.

Heading out soon to take the dogs to the park. Enjoy your Sunday everyone!

It is funny. I use UCAN products for racing as well. I don't like the stuff at all. It is so chalky and I can't get it to dissolve in water well but I have had great success using it as part of my super-secret race concoction (which I will share with anyone who is interested). So far it has worked but I don't love the stuff for its taste and consistency for sure.

I really like Cliff white chocolate macadamia bars but I don't really use them for racing or training, only meal supplementation/snacking at work when a meal is not on the near horizon.

Yeah I've read a lot online about UCAN. For now I'm using Hammer Perpetuem and it works for me so I'm sticking with that but once in a while I need something solid. I'm also experimenting with the feed zone portables! No better time than to play around with FOOD than the HOLIDAYS!!

Got my road bike today. It's a 2013 Fuji Roubaix 1.0 LE.

I don't actually have it right now though. It's currently back at the store waiting for me to get back over there either tomorrow or Tuesday to get the saddle height adjusted and make sure a couple other things are dead on.

Either way, it's going for test rides quite a bit over the few days I have left at home once I get; there's plenty of things to get used to with cycling in general and road biking in particular.

Hi All

I think I'm finally caught up with the last few pages I've missed!

I am mainly a liquids only fueler as well.  For IM, I use an Infinit custom formula which has a teeny amount of protein.  For long runs, its Powerbar Gel blasts and water.  Very simple.  I am curious about this UCAN product.  Why use it? why is it better than whatever you were using before?  I know Seebohar is a big fan, but my diet is really nothing like his of late.

I've never had any of the problems that other people have had with the consistency of UCAN. I also use the individual Blueberry Pomegranate? flavor. There were several reasons that I switched over to UCAN from Infinit. The main reason was that I had a "freak" incident with Infinit at IMTX11 and then again with the same custom formula at the Texas Time Trials later that year. I'd used Infinit Custom for 2 years prior to IMTX. I'd also never had any problems at all with the formula in extreme heat training or racing.  Right before the IMTX, I ordered what we thought was the same custom formula. Trusting that it would work and be the same as it had been for the last 2 years. Well it wasn't and I ended up vomiting at mile 4 of the marathon (IMTX) and walking the rest of the race. The formula tasted "off"on race day but I just chalked it off to it being race day. Also, during IMTX- my symptoms during the race were disorientation, didn't recognize friends, hearing loss, dizziness and vomiting. All of this began after getting off the bike. I didn't overextend myself during the bike. It is kind of funny as we have a video of me happy coming off the bike and dancing through transition.. I'll post of link of it in my blog for today. Yep- I ended up getting 2 IV's after the race. It was not a good day.

Fast forward to September when I decided to use the same bag of Infinit again at the Texas Time Trials - 6 hour bike race. Yes, it was hot but I live in Texas and train 24/7 in the heat so it wasn't anything new. On the second loop of the bike (60 or so miles in) , I started to lose my hearing and balance, then my vision would go in and out. I had an overwhelming desire to lay down on the side of the road and nap. For some weird reason, I thought that maybe I would feel better if I started riding my bike. It still amazes me that this seemed like a good idea at the time. I was able somehow to coast in and remove myself from the race. I really believe that there was something really off on that bag of Infinit.

Michael from Infinit and I discussed what happened after I finally put two and two together. There had to be something of with that bad of custom formula and MY reaction to it in the heat. Michael is great to work with and has a good product. I used and really did well with Infinit for 2+years and that one bag was just a freak accident. At that point I decided it was time to start looking to see if there was a better option for my body. One lesson to be learned from my mistake is not to use a brand new bag of any nutrition before testing it out before an Ironman.

My coach uses and suggested that I try UCAN. It really is an amazing product. I've never raced or felt as good racing from a nutritional standpoint as I do from UCAN. I also do not have an "ideal" diet. I'm not gluten intolerant and actually consume more carbs and beer than anyone probably should. I would highly recommend giving UCAN a try.

Can. Shall. Will. Once the short hurdles are jumped over, it's gonna be a blast.

I just need to pick up the rest of the gear when I go back to get the bike and we shall be good.

I would refer you to the UCAN site to read all of their propaganda. It probably works like they say it does but I am always conscious of the fact that the claims are all made by them to sell their product.

Rene and I have the same coach so he recommended it to me as well. It is interesting reading about Rene's experience with Infinit because I mix a full dose of UCAN and a full dose of Infinit custom mix in each water bottle, essentially doubling the calories, electolytes, etc in each bottle. This way I am getting the instant carbs, protein, caffeine and electrolytes from the Infinit and the delayed release starch that the UCAN folks claim. It has worked great for me in two Ironmans and four Halfs. I'm not changing anything at this point. It isn't broken......

On a totally non-triathlon front, my 16 year old son scored a 34 on his ACT which puts him in the 99th percentile (I have been told). I think that means he is looking pretty good for college applications with a near four-point GPA and that ACT. He should be a viable candidate everywhere. He is very academically driven and I am incredibly proud of him for how hard he has worked and how it is paying off. Sorry. Had to share. Proud parent moment

I am looking at a HIM as well, because I really enjoyed doing a full last year, but I want a little less time training and more time with my family this year. Hi, everyone...back from the holidays and a weekend trip to the beach for my wife's birthday.  I might have, um, had a beer or two.  We got a short run in on Saturday on the boardwalk...back it this week!

2013 totals:

Swim: 33h 55m 12s - 73937.7 Yd
Bike: 110h 53m 46s - 1866.95 Mi
Run: 60h 26m 55s - 364.27 Mi
Strength: 169h 02m
Power Walking: 19h 03m 40s (basically incline treadmill)
Stairmaster: 1h 44m

I'm all caught up on the posts now...whew!!

I really like Sheila T's book...we had a reading club over the challenge section.  Also as noted in my bio, I'm a Daniel's groupie.  @Chris - you might want to take a look at Daniels book (also over in the challenge forum).  I credit it with my successful return to running after some knee injuries myself.

Bryan,

Congrats on the new bike. New (and big) purchases are always especially exciting. I need to get back in this winter to get my fit adjusted after last season. I've got a few things that I feel need adjusted, and hope can be addressed by fit and isn't caused by me being on the wrong bike. I feel too stretched out in aero, and while my fitter says I'm not (based on measurements, angles, etc), that's how it feels....

Jason...props to your son. That's a huge accomplishment and you should be proud.

With regards to the nutrition debate. I, too, used Infinite custom blend on the bike. I double and triple it up in one bottle, based on how far I'm riding, and then sip from a bottle of water to dilute it in my stomach (thanks to Suzy for that tip last year). I then used Gu and water on the run.

I found, though, that during my one and only HIM race that once I got off the bike, anything sweet was NOT good in my stomach. I switched to pretzels and water at the aid stations on the run. So, I'm now in the midst of rethinking my nutrition plan for next season.

There's a coach in my area that loves UCan. My only problem with it (other than the horrid chalky, won't mix up powder and the 1/4 of the scoop that stays in your bottle rather than in your body and wastes $$) is that from the literature I've read, in order for it to really be effective, you've got to commit to a low carb (think Paleo) diet. With UCan, from what I've read, carbs/sugars are bad, and if you still consume sugars/carbs in your regular diet, you're not going to have the best experience with UCan. I love my grains and red potatoes.

Discuss, please.
