Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Silverman : Official Thread Originally posted by cjhild Originally posted by ChrisM I have to admit thoughts of bagging it started dancing around my head this morning You have raced a lot this year (plus travel), so I understand that, but you got this. I'm bringing my wetsuit too but am pretty bummed that we will most likely be unable to use them. As a poor swimmer I was counting on the wetsuit benefits. I'm concerned about the whole thing, no wetsuit, how to pace on the bike with the hills, and a hot run. At least we will be able to say that we did the Silverman 70.3 that one year it was really hot. I actually just went online and ordered this for the run, and maybe even the bike. https://www.desotosport.com/product/LSDS Feeling a little better about it, now that I am getting a strategy in place. I just don't want to be miserable. Or at least any more miserable than I usually am I hae found that the bike course at Mead oddly actually helps with heat management. Since there are so many rollers and not huge climbs, I use the ups to sit up and drink, douse the arms, then get a little break and a breeze on the descent. I don't know wha tthe climb is like to Henderson though as I have not done that. Also just have to be aware as the perspiration just dries right off you, so you don't really like you're sweating a lot. But you are Overall plan is just to slow the F down. 240 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Silverman : Official Thread Glad you are a bit more settled down. You were getting a little panicky for a bit. I have to come up with strategy as well. I have never run with a fuel belt but wondering if I should reconsider. There are 3 aid stations on course so never more than a mile or so between. Do you guys think that it's going to be so hot that we would need more than that or just worried they may run short on supplies? Also, set up my bike to get an extra bottle. 1x water between bars switch out every aid station, 1x frame Infinit concentrate, and 1x behind seat Infinit. I usually live off course a bit more but want to have that extra bottle of nutrition in case on the bike longer. Bringing wet suit and swim skin to be safe. Hoping it will stay cool enough until at least part way thru the run. Just going to enjoy and race smart. Edited by StevenC 2014-09-30 2:44 PM |

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Silverman : Official Thread Steven - I know they ran out of ice at worlds in 2011 or whenever it was. But Frank L is a very good race director, i would think they got those issues ironed out. I know just for me, I like having a bottle i can put ice in and drink between stations. Worked for me at a couple hot HIMs, though not this hot. And yeah, not sure if panicky is the right word (probably is....), but definitely overthinking! Also glad I trained for SOS in the zoots, no socks for me as they'd be soaked in about 5 minutes Edited by ChrisM 2014-09-30 3:18 PM |

Can't be any worse than the 2013 edition of Wildflower I was trying to think back if I knew what happened that year, then I remembered Duh, I did the Oly on Sunday. When it was freezing cold and windy! That was one weird weekend (the weather, I mean, not all the camping and whatnot....) Edited by ChrisM 2014-09-30 3:18 PM |

Regular 302 Georgetown, KY | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Silverman : Official Thread ^^ Where are you from? Maybe it is because I'm used to training in mid 90's and 90% humidity, but the weather doesn't concern me a bit. Maybe it should, I don't know, but it wasn't long ago that I was running all my runs in worse heat than we will face in Vegas. If you're from somewhere that stays pretty cool, I can see why the heat would be a concern, but if not, haven't you been training in the 90 degree weather, at most, a couple of weeks ago? It's the humidity that kills me. So hoping I will be fine this weekend. Will have a bottle ready to go for the run just in case. Good luck and c u there. |

So Cal, 1 mile from the beach. 85 for us is a heat wave. Luckily our humidity is higher, so that won't be an issue in the dry desert. As for heat training, I am training for a Nov. marathon and my long runs during the heat wave it was more important to get a quality run in rather than heat training, so we ran early |

Extreme Veteran 566 Southern California | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Silverman : Official Thread Originally posted by ChrisM I actually just went online and ordered this for the run, and maybe even the bike. Nice. I picked up a cheap white technical tee for the run, hopefully that will help a little, my other tech tees are colors. Of course everyone else on the course is going to suffer with the visual of me in a see through shirt...you're welcome. I am terrible at slowing down on the bike, twice at O-side I have hammered the bike only to pay dearly on the run. We'll see if I have more common sense this time. I'm in the Palm Springs area, SoCal low desert. Over the summer we are in the 120 range, my primary time slot for running is at lunch, perfect for proper heat training. I'm just not doing it, I stay inside on the treadmill. I am not up for being that miserable. I was gambling that it'd be cool on race day, might not be so I will suffer a bit. I run with a visor, might consider a hat instead to keep the ice on the head. |

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Silverman : Official Thread RD posted on FB that you can hand your swim bag off to family at T1 if you have someone there, rather than having to find the bag at the corral at the end. Might save a few minutes of hassle after the race. I guess it would just have a towel, goggles and cap. |

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Silverman : Official Thread Any chance for a meetup? I am getting in Saturday morning, plan is to check in /drop off run stuff between 10-11, then drop off the bike, then run for cover. My plan has a short swim/bike/run so i MIGHT do that at bike drop off, depending on weather. As in 10-15 mintues each. If not, look for me on course. I'll be in black shorts, orange (!!!) shoes, plain white long sleeve top with probably an LA Tri hat on. Bib 182 |

Saturday: drop off my gear as early as possible - while at T1, swim for 5-10 mins. Sunday: enjoy the course suffer the Sunday night traffic on the way back to LA.

Be nice to get a sense for what 80 degree open water feels like. |

I'll probably get a burger right after the race, but then we may head down to Brazil de Texas for some magical sword meat. This is the last race of the season for me, so the next morning I will be getting donuts... Definitely donuts! I won't be using this coupon, so feel free to give it a try if you go! 240 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Silverman : Official Thread Temp forecast looks like it dropped by a couple degrees. Weather.com now has high of 92 and my iPhone weather has 91. While not great, that is better than 94 or 95. I am definitely doing a short ride (45min) on Fri at around 1p or maybe a bit earlier depending on when I get into town. Leaving from Pavilion for anyone interested. Will probably swim Sat morning before bike drop off, 10a or so. |
