Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Originally posted by nicole14e I had a very productive weekend. Between masters, visiting a friend, cleaning my kitchen, making some cookies, finishing laundry, and spending far too much at HomeGoods, it felt pretty good! I also worked late Friday and got a ton of emails out of my inbox, so feeling like my brain is a bit clearer to focus on work. Now just need to keep it that way... Got in a 30 min. PZ ride this morning, followed by some core. Happy Valentine's Day! Cookies?!?! Tell me more! :D |

Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN A straight Z2 ride for 60' this morning. It was boring...but expectedly boring. It is hard to get out of bed in the morning when your apartment doesn't have heat (overnight lows are in the mid-40s). But freezing your buns off a bit is good for encouraging you not to mess around for a long time before you actually start riding. |

That and it feels good once you get warmed up on the trainer, though I guess not as much in Z2. I tend to get a little cold if I have a fan blowing on me for those longer Z2 sets. |

Expert 4926 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN This morning was a 45' anaerobic ride...2' intervals @ 120% with tons of rest in between. Only four this week (six next week) and the 4th really took some focus and mental game-playing to get through it. Finished up with a half hour of strength training in the Pain Cave. |

Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Never too many baked goods!!! I’m saved by the fact I don’t like to bake. If I bake something, I eat it like it is my job until it is gone—zero self control around baked goodies! Last weekend I made banana bread to use up some ripe bananas. I ate half the loaf in 24 hours—one slice at a time. I ended up taking to my friend. I don’t need to eat an entire loaf of banana bread in a weekend! 60’ ride with intervals today. Tough, but I feel accomplished after having finished it. Not sure I like the new plan. It clusters three rides in a row, then runs, with swims evenly spaced and no day off for the next two months. Seems like if all the workouts you could cluster, swimming would be it, then spread runs and bikes out a bit more. I’ll stick with it a bit more to see how it works once the pool opens again (Sunday!!!) and what my schedule looks like as I roll through all the workouts on a “normal” week. ST to be done throughout the day today, as I need motivation to get up from my desk more! |

1942 , Kronobergs lan | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN 2 months without a day off Gretchen? I know you are a machine, a national champion and younger than me but it sounds like madness to me! The 12.5 went well Nicole, thanks, you don’t really notice a difference when you add a little bit to the distance every week. This week is 13k, we’ll see if it’s still easy. |

ST to be done throughout the day today, as I need motivation to get up from my desk more! I'm addicted to Costco chocolate chip cookies. If they're in the house, I'll eat like three or four a day. I think that's like 600-700 calories LOL. Glad I work out a lot. I agree with you...the workout clusters are weird, Gretchen. I spread my three runs out evenly (every other day) and group my cycling sessions 2 x 2 a week, the like you said swim whenever you can so that winds up being a couple of days in a row for my longer ones due to scheduling. I also have a Bikram yoga day and an off day to I have to squeeze in 10 workouts (3 run, 3 swim, 4 bike) into those 5 days so it takes some patience to figure it all out. |

Expert 4926 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Today was slog day. An hour slog on the treadmill in Z2 (10' WU, then about 4.5 miles @ E pace with a few walk breaks), then 1500 slog Z2 in the pool with the first 1400 non-stop. Didn't sleep well either so it was mentally tough at 6 AM but my old people buddies at the Y kept me honest. |

Regular 1779 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN So far this week has been better than last. Still no morning workouts but I've forced myself off the sofa in the evenings to get something in. Zwift monday, Tuesday off (valentine's day with Mrs Bullfrog) and treadmill Wednesday and Thursday. Not 'the machine' levels of training but better than last week. Zwift tonight, run outside both days on the weekend. And that should end up with a semi productive week. @Gretchen, I agree grouping bikes and runs together is a bit odd. Unless there is a scheduling issue which says it has to be that way one of the nice parts of triathlon is being able to mix things up. Good for the mind and physically. I'd be interested if you ask your coach what the thinking behind the 3 in a row clusters is? Maybe trying to simulate end of Ironman fatuige by the end of the 3rd ride? @Mike, Nice workouts. 1400m continuous in the pool? I don't think I've ever done that. I don't think I've ever done intervals longer than 500m for that matter. @Nathalie, if 12.5 was easy last week, 13 will be this week. Nice progress. Have a good weekend guys. |

Expert 4926 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN @Andrew: good work getting the consistency in - it'll come along. I got in my only double on my schedule. Morning swim, 2700 yards with some power (paddles) and speed (sprinting) as the main sets. Went OK I suppose. Then lunch was 90' around the Z2/tempo range on Zwift - felt really easy so I guess that's good. Tomorrow is spin class and a tempo run. I posted this on Strava as well, but I've come to the conclusion that 53 ain't 43 and training this hard at my age is tough!! I was looking through my training logs from 2014 and geez I had a lot of volume. Doubles almost every day - no way in hell I'm doing that now. |

1942 , Kronobergs lan | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Yes, as we get older, recovery becomes more and more important. Talking of which, I took an unscheduled rest day today. Feeling heavy and tired, hope I am not getting sick…. |

Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN @Mike—I was 32 when I started triathlon. I had no idea what everyone was talking about when they talked about the importance of recovery and rest. At 43, I know what they’re talking about now. @Nathalie—I hope you’re not coming down with something!! @Andrew—consistency is key. Great job! I got in a two hour trainer ride today. First 60’ was 6x2.5” Z4 with 5’ Z1 rest. The last hour was Z2 boredom. All in all, a good ride. The pool opens back up tomorrow!!!!!! |

1942 , Kronobergs lan | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Feeling better today, I think I was beaten up after a tough hockey game on Thursday. No I didn’t play, but watching my team in a very exciting and tight game (which we lost in sudden). Screaming shouting, singing, clapping hands, crying (at the end). My heart rate was high the whole time, I’m counting it as a workout. Better but not 100% so taking it easy today, just an easy/recovery Zwift ride, about 90 minutes at going shopping speed. Hopefully can run my 13k tomorrow Have a nice weekend! Edited by Rollergirl 2023-02-18 6:06 AM |

Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Up early for a 60' Z2 run before the pool opened (supposedly at 6am). Unfortunately, despite being scheduled to open today from winter maintenance, the pool was not open. Grrr....it is supposed to open at 8am today due to chemical imbalances, but I'm not risking getting a chemical burn just to get in a 1500 yard swim. It gets bumped to tomorrow, where I already have a swim scheduled, so I guess it is back to back swims for the week! That's economizing the prep/showing efforts to the max! |

1942 , Kronobergs lan | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Yes, exactly that, it was a hockey hangover (only drank one small beer before the game) Sorry about the pool. You’re right to be cautious, ”chemical unbalance” could be anything, and not something I’d trust they fix in 2 hours. |

Regular 1779 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN @Mike, Nice job on the double. 53 aint 43? I can confirm that 38 is not 20something either haha. Although I do think adding a wife and children to the mix has as much to do with less volume as my decaying body. haha. @Gretchen, Nice job ticking the workouts off as always. I'm sure the chemical imbalance is just getting the place up and running again after maintenance. The age of closed pools is coming to an end. @Nathalie, Sorry your team lost. But that's the beauty of sports... there's always next game/next season Hoping that you're feeling 100% again. There has been too much feeling ill in this group recently. @DQ... Where are you buddy? We can't help your accountability if you don't check in. I finished my week as planned with a 45 minute zwift Friday night, a 45ish minute run with 3x3' @ 5km pace Saturday and my long run, 90 minutes on Sunday. Totals of 2 zwifts, 1:15, 4 runs, 3:15 4 1/2 hours total Hope everyone had a good weekend. |

It felt good, although the water was COLD! I don’t know that they have it fully heated yet and with daytime highs only around 60F (15C) it isn’t going to warm up on its own. Later today, strength training. Has anyone heard from Dave? I tried to message him a couple of weeks ago when he asked for accountability buddies, but somehow managed to message myself instead. Didn’t notice until yesterday. |

But that's the beauty of sports... there's always next game/next season Hoping that you're feeling 100% again. There has been too much feeling ill in this group recently. Yes, it's quite painful at the moment (they also lost on Saturday) but thanks to a strong first half of the season (a little more) , they are still second in the table and unless things go really really wrong, that's where they'll finish, which is not a bad position to be in before the playoffs. Now, if they could get back to the way they were playing last year in time for the playoffs..... If things go really really well, they still have a shot at the first spot. I love watching hockey and supporting my team, it's the closest I can get to actullay playing a team sport myself (my days of kicking a ball are over) Ran my 13k yesterday, new PR, no difference with the 12.5 last week. Have a great week everyone! Edited by Rollergirl 2023-02-20 5:24 AM |

Expert 4926 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Hey, all. Glad to see everyone is busy! @Gretchen: cold pools are brutal; the heater was broken at our pool one time and the water was like 62 degrees and they had to cut short the kids' practices because their lips were turning blue - I made it through about 25 minutes then jumped in the hot tub LOL; nice work getting it in @Nathalie: I LOVED hockey growing up...huge Philadelphia Flyers fan (we had a couple of Swedish players on our team back in the 80s...the late Pelle Lindbergh was the most famous); the Flyers have been putrid for more than a decade so I really don't care any more; live hockey games are AWESOME! @Andrew: good to see you piling up the workouts on Strava...seems you're getting back into the groove (soon to be upended by your kids I'm sure ) @DQ: where are you buddy??? I had a great week, biggest training week since early September with about 60 miles on the bike, 11 miles running over three sessions, 4200 yards in the pool and all the strength and core work to keep me from falling apart. This week I'm dropping a little volume to force a day off today and we're driving most of the day Saturday. It's tough to squeeze in that volume over five days, especially without impacting work. Back at it tomorrow with some reps on the treadmill and more strength work. Hope everyone has a healthy, great week! |

Later this afternoon, I'll do a 60' Z2 ride of boredom. Learned something this morning...I can have either a coffee or a protein shake before an interval run, but not both. Never both again...I thought you were supposed to want to barf at the end of intervals, not the beginning. :D Anyway...it is done and I won't make that mistake again. |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Hey all! Love seeing all the activity! Mike, did you go to Masters Friday? I went on Saturday. Got in about 2500 yds and felt amazing after. I'm definitely building slower than usual since I have time until my first tri, so that's been nice. I want to push myself but not get too far ahead of myself. I did a 30 min PZ ride yesterday morning, then had a double header at vball last night. Last indoor match of the season, so will just be twiddling my thumbs until beach starts back up. Will probably hit up some Monday night masters practices in between. Struggled to wake up early this morning since I didn't get home until almost 11 and couldn't fall asleep until 11:30. Managed to get out of bed and do 10 minutes of core and a 20 minute yoga flow class that felt amazing. I also meal prepped this week, which actually mostly consisted of buying pre-made salads...I have to make it as simple as possible to eat well or I just won't do it. I also made some yummy egg muffins for breakfast. I'm determined to get back into the 150s by spring (was at 168 this morning). |
