13 miles is awesome!

I did this organized ride where a lot of people dressed up like christmas characters (elves, toy soldiers, christmas trees etc) and rode down Las Vegas Blvd (aka the strip.)

There were about 50 or so riders and was so fun to see the tourists gawk when they saw us rolling up at 830am. The traffic was pretty cool too, everyone got out of our way.

*For the cold weather riders, what gloves are you using? A friend let me borrow this high tech pair of Sugoi--leather on the bottom and a wind-proofy material on the top. They were great at first, but towards the end, my hands started to sweat and I got cold. Any suggestions?

Can't help you with the gloves because I'm a temperature wimp .  So you left out the very important information of.... what was your costume?!  Where are the pics???

Alright... you people are far too quiet.  Is it because you're busy training?  If so, let's hear about it!

I taught two spin classes today and went for a run.  Now I need to go for a nap .

What's everyone else up to?

Eh...did 1-legged spin drills this morning.  Those always hurt.  Way to inject pain into my day...

i use a pair of wal-mart snowboard gloves that work pretty well.  for the sweating, you can get a pair of liners to wick away the sweat (and support  iowa businesses!)

for the x-mas wish list, i want some of those lobster gloves, they look way cool (cool as in awsome, because cool like cold would just be stupid for the winter, you know what i mean?  yeah, i'm rambling, so what?)

drills, wonderful idea.  i did a race this summer and stayed within my HR zones for the bike portion.  however, i did not go as fast as i would hope.  what are some cycling drills that people know of that will help me get a little more umph out of my bike?

I'll give you a quarter if you can successfully do this on your first try !

So lots of people use the Spinervals or CTS and Cyclerobx DVDs and swear by them.  They have a variety of titles that cover just about everything you could ever want and more out of riding on the trainer.

Sometimes training plans will call for specific drills like the single leg isolations Sal did.  You might also try any of the following:

- Select a gear you'd use when doing a flat road sprint outside.  Do 15 minutes of 30 second sprints, recover for 60 seconds between each one.  You can also do 20 minutes of 60 second sprints with a longer recovery time (120 seconds).
- Alternate 2 minutes hard, 4 minutes easy... hard should be high end of Z3 (it's challenging but doable, about 5 words is all you can say, but you're not breathless... but would be if you pushed anymore).  STAY AEROBIC .

Good morning boys and girls!  What's everyone got going on today?

I taught a spin class at the crack of stupid and have a swim and some ST on tap this morning.

How do the holidaze impact your training?  For me, it's actually easier because I have more flexibility with the kids out of school and activities.  Plus, we are not traveling anywhere, but I know for lots of folks getting training done this time of year is a challenge.

Leave for Albuquerque this morning for business...if I'm REALLY lucky, I might get a swim in this morning.  Otherwise, I should be able to get a little hiking in this afternoon.  A co-worker and I are gonna try and hit the Sandia mountains for a hike this afternoon...

Got in an early morning swim. Not feeling too good today, I think I'm coming down with something. I'd attribute it to lack of training this month, but I've been feeling like this for a few days, and I've lost a little weight. I'm hosting bunco at my house tonight, so I'm hoping the kids will stay in the basement while the ladies are here. I haven't figured out what I'm serving for dinner yet, so I'd better not linger here too long.

I'm struggling with my swims. I don't seem to be able to swim more than a 100 without a rest, and even on my best days, I can't swim more than one or two 100's without a lengthy break (like 60 seconds) between them. Any suggestions? Should I keep going despite being completely out of breath (can't do bilateral breathing, one-sided breathing feels like it's not enough, and when I stop I can barely talk)? Or am I better off to keep taking frequent rests?

Without seeing how you swim, I'd venture to guess it could be an issue of body alignment. If you're head is up, your hips are sinking and your feet are dragging along the bottom of the pool, that takes triple the amount of energy than if you were streamlined.

You may want to practice with the pull buoy for a few laps, it will hoist your legs/hips up where they need to be and will keep your head down allowing you to focus on your stroke.

And by all means, take whatever amount of time you need to breathe!
A tip my coach gave me awhile ago... is to breathe out through your mouth for 4 (or 3 or 2 seconds) while your head is face down, that way your lungs are empty when you turn to catch your breathe... then breathe in for the same amount of time so you can inhale all the precious air you need. Hope that helps!

100 laps?  that's pretty good

don't get too discouraged!  swimming is a very technique important sport and doing it correctly takes a bit of practice.  you can do it!

agreeing with redlv, it's tough to diagnose swimming over the internet.  is there a coach or lessons instructor in your area that gives private lessons?

ST is strength training oh, and in case anyone's interested?  It hurt.   A lot.  I might have to swap my rest days out since I might not be able to move tomorrow!

Hope you enjoyed the spin class and hope you had a really good instructor who  helped you  keep your HR down a bit this time <---- subliminal message in invisible font.

Hi Amy...that was what it was like for me when I 1st started swimming again.  I agree with the others.  As you feel more comfortable in the water and learn better balance and develop swim fitness, you'll be able to go for longer distances.  Hang in there.

Many swim programs continue that way.  You may have days where you have a series of 100s.  The rest time between just gets shorter .

Went for a 2 hr hike in the Sandias this afternoon.  Half the trail was snow-covered.  It was beautiful...a full day of work tomorrow...

I still have some days where swimming more than a hundred meters at a time is tough... however I want to commend you because you really are approaching it the right way by doing the drills and ladders and listening to your body.  Also, slow and steady... not sure if your pace for today's swim includes your rest times or not so not sure what your actual swim pace was but I know that part of my problem with swim endurance when I first started out was that I seriously just wanted to get to the heck to the other side of the pool.  Period.  Therefore, I would start out way faster than I should have.  I had to teach myself to really, really slow down and keep my HR and breathing in check.  And yes, usually I do wear my HRM in the pool.

I'm with Kara and Adam on this... if you could find a swim coach that was available even for just a couple of lessons to check your form and give you some specific feedback you might gain some confidence and have some concrete suggestions on how to improve.

Edited because apparently I can't lurn me who too spellz.

Nice!  90 minute trainer ride can be tough (not for me, I love my trainer because I am a SUPER dork!).  Hope it wasn't too painful for you.  Enjoy that run and swim.

Just for the record, Sal makes me do the sports in order... so if I had a swim and run on my schedule, I'd have to pretend to do the swim first and then the run.  It's a great idea in theory but my real life often gets in the way of that.  Let's take today, you know, just hypothetically speaking, of course...  I would have had to get up at 4:00 instead of 5:00 to get a swim in before teaching so obviously I simply swam later, but don't tell Sal.

Thanks for checking in!  Let us know how the run and swim go.

Hour of spin class then 800 yards swimming in the gym pool

Came out and it was raining. So we are fixing to send some rain y'alls way.

The fixing to and y'all was for Mila so she would feel comfortable with my communications.
