So, I final had s very small break from work / training.  I took a couple of minutes to catch up my training log as well as fill out a race report for the Olympic race I did this past weekend.

I was the swimmer for our relay team.  Was hoping for the 1500 yd swim to be sub 24.  I guess I did not realize the race was 1500 Meters wich is actually 1640 yds (that adds a little time

So the water was 62 degress and it was a 2 lap open water swim which I was able to do in a little over 23 minutes (that was a 1:25 / 100 yd pace)  wich I was very happy with.  But the most important thing to me was not the time so much as the 1st place medal our team got for winning our division.  What is hard to believe is that with a time of 2:18 and a win the relay division by over 8 minutes, we still only placed 4th overall.  Three different individuals beat our time (1st guy by over 10 minutes)  Now that guy is an animal.

Tons of fun though, and glad I did it.  All the experience of racing without all the pain the next day.

YAY!

Met with the Team in Training people this morning and while I admire them and what they accomplish, it is not for me. Lots of great people though, so it was nice to meet them.

Tomorrow is my Trail Run 5k, and Sunday is the Weston Memorial 5k. Excited to race 2 days in a row. )

robingray_260 - 2011-05-25 3:29 PM Anyone racing this weekend? I have my first sprint of the season on Saturday - getting a little nervous!

Not racing, but doing "Bike the Drive"  Lake Shore Drive (main drag that hugs the lakefront from the north to south side of Chicago)  is closed to cars and the bikes take over for several hours early Sunday morning.

THAT sounds like fun! I don't think they did that while I was living there. Maybe I should return to Chicago and find a new job!!

This was the 10th anniversary ride.  Starts at Bryn Mawr in the north and the turn around is at the Science and Industry Museum.  Roughly 32 miles round trip.

Well, not the weather I ordered for today. Excuse me, but where is spring/almost summer?!?!!?!?! We have had absolutely the worst weather lately.  But despite less than optimal conditions ( temp in the upper 50's, DENSE fog and misting) we had fun.  Had frozen toes by the end, but I got my biking in for the day.  Better than the trainer.  And so far....the hip is doing OK.

Hey gang, hope your Memorial Day weekend was good, mine was. I think I set a sleeping record! yesterday had a 2 hour nap, followed by a 6 hour nap, and then a 6 hour night of sleep!

Had a 5k yesterday and did OK for me. I need to be more consistent with the running. I had a good swim this week, but need to add another. Have not been on my bike at all.

Rejoining the Tri-2-One team for June, see if I can open water swim with them. I'm such a chicken-sh#&t. I can get in a couple bike rides with them too.

Hang tough everybody, it's getting hot and humid here in Miami... overnight low? what's that?

Hi everyone.. Sorry I've been out of the loop for a while.  I've been spending a lot of time with my tri coach.  I had my first round at boot camp this week, and yes it whiped my "BOOTIE". Cry

I have my first tri coming up on June 5th.  I'm getting nervous.  I've been trying to get into the open water to get some experience. (our lake)  I had a freak out moment the last time I got in.  IT WAS COLD!!! I felt good in my wet suit though.  I just have to get my breathing down in the ice water, while trying to catch my breath to swim.  I was supposed to swim with my coach last night, but we had tornado warnings around here, so we trained inside instead.  I will be giving it another go tomorrow.  I hope everyone is staying strong in their training.  I know there's a lot of races coming up.  Anyone doing a race this weekend? - Ree

So...been in the ice water again yet?

Hi all,

I was out of the country for a couple of weeks, so I have not been around here lately.  Got back last week and spent many days trying to get back into the swing of things.  It's amazing how easy it is to slack off and how tough it is to ramp things up.  I went for a long (for me) bike ride Sunday and since then my right knee has been sore.  This has been happening a lot this year and I think it is related to having a new bike and not having a proper fitting.  I'm going to try and remedy that this week.  Anyone have experience getting a professional fitting done?  Anything I should look out for?

Steph, I feel your Miami heat pain.  One thing you have over the middle of the state dwellers is you usually have a nice sea breeze to help keep things "cool".  I miss that from my former Ft. Lauderdale life!  As far as the ows goes, I would much rather swim in the ocean than any Florida lake!  Florida lakes are gross and filled with gators, snakes and by mid/late summer ameobas (sp?)! In addition, you generally can't see your hand in front of your face, so you can spend your swim time imagining the gators lurking all around you   Yes, there are sharks in the ocean, but the type they have in Florida- on the Atlantic side - are (generally) not the least bit aggressive.  When was the last time you heard of a shark bite in S. Florida?  Still, there are some basic rules that I'm sure you'll follow when you swim in the ocean.   Anyway, I guess b/c I grew up on the Ft. Lauderdale beach sharks never enter my mind; whereas, before last year, I never was in a lake and I HATE swimming in them!

Congrats for 4th overall, thats pretty amazing. The guy who beat you by 10 minutes might be a pro just doing a warm up race or something... who knows, but damn, thats fast.

I still get nervous when I swim in Lake Michigan, and the only thing in there that could attack me is a stray plastic bag. Actually happened...got stuck on my hand...totally freaked out

Although one time I was swimming after a boating accident and one person was still missing and presumed drowned.  Kept getting the willies thinking that I could look down and see someone looking up.

So THAT brings me to the Trail Run on Sunday...oy. Last June when I did my first one, it was fun...really tough, but fun. I only fell once and I landed on all fours so I was fine...little scratched up.

THIS ONE....oy, I bailed after about a mile. I found out later that one of the trails we were on was called The Goat...no sh&t... up and down and up and down...clambering and scrambling and skating down gravely falls of 10 feet ... then STOPPED... everyone is standing on the trail, because we have to cross some nasty ravine full of gray water ON A COUPLE OF 25 foot poles! Got across that, more winding and listening to people OOF when they face plant...and STOPPED again! I'm thinking WTF? GO! these people 4 or 5 of them are taking their shoes off and wading across an 8 foot ravine, up to their waists in gray (kinda looks like skim milk and smells like sulfer) water! I look to the right and there are 3 orange flags...duh! the trail is to the right...it's mangroves in gray muck/mud, but I didn't slip into any of it.... gawd! I can't believe they didn't look around before committing to that water, yech. SO finally I get my butt back to a place near the start...and I bailed. I have a huge bruise on my lower ankle and some serious scrapes on my shins. There's no way I'll do that trail again. My friend Linda, who is FAST finished 4th at over 45 minutes for the 5k! I went back to the car, grabbed some water and ran around on the nice dirt roads for about half an hour then went home. My friend Barbie did the Half Marathon. She's so insane.

On vacation, having a great series of workouts.  Long rides, short intense rides, long and short swims, running.  All good.  Today, a special treat - riding with my coach for a couple of hours, then a run of about 90 minutes.   Short swim tonight to test the wet suit.  Race a sprint on Saturday.  All good.

Bike fits - get a good one.  Which side of the knee is the pain?  Front or back? Generally, too low, pain in front, too high, pain in back.

This gives an idea about adjustment.

They generally are too low.  Sheldon Brown (great web site for all things bike) says its because as kids we had better balance low, then we out grew any attempt to raise it fast enough to keep up with our leg length.

Ann-Marie

Yes Ann Marie, it was Oleta. I have a friend who did the Spartan Race...I probably have photos of you! Looked like fun. I'm going to ask Marlon when they'll do the other trail again. We just don't have much for trail running down here and I really liked it. But they are mountain bike trails so running on them would be dangerous unless it's closed for a running event.

Bike Fit - I have yet to get my proper bike fit but I found the right shop. My friend took one look at me on my bike and said 'your seat is too low' and fixed it. Voila! I would like to get my shoes adjusted too so they hit the pedals a bit further back on my sore foot. Maybe I'll go do that today! Thanks for the reminder!

I did my iRow mp3 (from iTrain.com) workout on my Concept2 last night. It was really good! 5200 meters in a half an hour of drills was a nice workout. The erg can be too easy sometimes without a little direction. Since I don't use headphones/music when I run and bike, it was kinda nice to have a voice and some music during the workout.

I had my bike fit done yesterday.  It was done using the Retul 3D system.  Very high tech! It took over 2 hrs.  Ended up raising the saddle, moving it forward, moving the cleats back a bit, and taking a spacer out of the handlebar stem.  I am now in a neutral position and if I can work on my flexibility a bit we can, in future, go to a bit more aggressive position.

The 3D function was really cool and I was able to see (happily) that both my knees track very nicely so there are no issues there.  That gives me great hope that these adjustments will resolve my knee issue.

I went for a run this morning and was amazed how tired my legs were from the bike fitting - turns out I got a nice, unexpected workout along with a new fit
