It was not a one for one trade and, in retrospect, it was a multi-step process of wearing my wife down (and in the end, capitulation on my part) Here are my notes: - Create a low likelihood scenario. I kept telling my wife I didn't want to do a IM or that I didn't think I could get through one. By lowering expectations, she took me less seriously. Plus, I find that my wife indulges me more when I appear vulnerable. - Train like crazy for a HIM. For my last HIM, I had max weeks of 15-17 hours. While it drove my wife crazy, there's only an incremental amount of more training (and over a longer of period of time) to do a full IM. If she survived heavy HIM training, I told her she can survive IM training. - Pick a date more than 1 year away. Sitting here in 2012, 2014 sounds like a long way and thus, a lot less threatening. - Pitch the experience as one and done. I kept telling my wife that I have one IM in me and that I wanted to do it when I turned 45 (2014). As a bucket list kind of endeavor, it made for an easier bargain. - Bring up the idea when alcohol is involved. Wife had a couple of cocktails in her when we were out with friends and that was when I received the verbal consent. - Lastly, I agreed a month ago to redo our entire kitchen - new cabinets, new appliances, new fixtures, new floors, new electrical work, etc. As you can imagine, the IM will cost me well into the five figures!!!! Joe, this is a classic, thanks for the laugh! |

Dialogue from Miracle on 34th Street SHELLHAMMER: (Macy's executive) What trouble could he get into? (Referring to Kris Kringle) DORIS (Maureen O'Hara): All that's got to happen is a policeman to ask his name. A big argument. Clang, clang! Bellevue! PIERCE (the doctor): You can prevent that very simply. If he could stay with an employee...they could ride to and from work together. I'd prefer he didn't take the train to Great Neck twice a day. SHELLHAMMER: That would solve everything. They could steer him away from trouble. SHELLHAMMER: I'm sure you made a wise decision. Now, let's see...who could rent him a room? DORIS: You. Your son's away at school. What about his room? SHELLHAMMER: Well, I don't mind. I'd be glad to. I'm positive Mrs. Shellhammer wouldn't like it. She's a little... Say, I have an idea. We always have martinis before dinner. I'll make them double-strength tonight. I'll bet after a couple of them, she'll be more receptive. |

We'll be in France tonight and then arriving in Switzerland on Monday morning. Not sure when I'll have access to wifi and mobile data is pretty expensive so I'll update when I can. We have wifi over next weekend so I'll make sure I post my bib number when we've registered. Omg it's actually nearly here... |

![]() | ![]() 61 mile bike ride, my longest ever. 3:36 of biking, but 4.5 hours away from home due to another flat 22 miles in. But I actually fixed it on the side of the road for the first time rather than brining it in. Unfortunately, it took me about 35 minutes. I did find the cause. I carefully went over the inside of the tire and there was a sliver of metal poking through. I made sure to get it out of the tire so it didn't puncture the new tube. Didn't go that fast (16.8 mph) but did focus on nutrition. Got in 2 Perpetuem packets (270 calories each) 540 2 Heed packets (100 calories each) 200 4 Hammer gels (90 calories each) 360 1 Simply Lemonade (190 calories) 190 (bought this at coffee shop at mile 32) Total: 1290 calories That's pretty good I think. ![]() | ![]() No I don't freeze it. I mix the vanilla-berry perpetuem with the lemon-lime heed. Flavor is fine. I'm not that picky unless it is too sweet like the honey stinger gels. |

We just returned from whirl wind trip to Utah, Montana, and British Columbia. I want to thank everyone for their support as we faced the challenges with our eldest son, Ben - 17 years old. July 5th, Ben completed 9 weeks in a therapeutic wilderness program in Utah. A He loved wilderness after the 1st 2 weeks, he lost 20 pounds, hiked with his team of 10 boys 5 times per week, was totally unplugged (no electronic anything), no latrine, no tent - just a tarp - and a 45+ pound back pack. Wilderness/nature, exercise, simple clean diet, excellent staff and counsellors, divine intervention (not in that order) has resulted in first huge step of major transformation. To see Benjamin smile, engaged in life, and not depressed or suicidal was priceless. He is now in Montana Academy, a therapeutic boarding school, - near Glacier National Park. He will be required to eat clean diet, exercise daily, and do fun team activities, like rock climbing, mountain biking, etc. every weekend while finishing senior year of high school and first few months of college. He will probably be at Montana Academy for 18 months. Saying good-bye was hard but knowing he is in the process of continuing his major transformation makes our missing him o.k. Again, thank you for your support. Now, it is time for Mum to get back into consistent training by joining our July team challenge. Do we have a weight challenge this month?

![]() | ![]() Charlotte, Great news. Those are basically my favorite places on earth. (I want to go back to Glacier right now). Finding the right environment is such a big deal. I have five kids in four different schools. Everyone reacts to this and says it must be a nightmare with them all going in different directions. Actually, having all of them in a situation that is right for them made everything so much easier. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Charlotte, that is great news indeed! Another proof that going back to basics is all we need to keep things in better perspective. That's probably one of the main reasons most of us run, bike and swim outdoors as well. Had a good weekend doing some MTB trail riding and running with the club on Sunday. One of the benefits or joining a running club is meeting some of the seasoned members there. One of them I talked to after the run was a guy, 63yo, who completed over 100 marathons, 2 IMs and numerous ultra-marathons. His best marathon time was 2:55 some years ago... And the guy is a builder working on site every day! He looks like a builder, talks and swears like a builder. One tough bugger. Chris, you need to work on your transitions...

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Charlotte, that is great news indeed! You probably feel like a million bucks now, huh? Glad to know that the kiddo made such a huge turn in life, I have one myself that is not walking really straight and it worries me a big deal. I know the feeling, and I also experienced it from the other side as being somewhat of a trouble teen myself. Hope to see you training soon and steady. |

Marathon training starts this - 18 weeks - 5 runs per week. I took the Higdon advanced plan and dropped the Monday workout. In its place, I will substitute cross training or an extra day of rest. Hope to log over 650 miles in the next 18 weeks and stay as healthy as possible. Gabe S 2/ B 2/ R 5 Rest 2 Total 9 Time 9:41:28 Charlotte S0/B0/R1 Rest 2 Total 1 Time 1:05

![]() | ![]() Does anybody here use special tubes that help prevent against flats? I'm sick of getting flats. There are Slime brand tubes that have goop in them that supposedly self seal. There are also extra thick tubes that are branded as thorn resistant. Anyone have any experience with them? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I spent the weekend at my youngest daughter's softball tournament and camping in Traverse City. I did manage a ride before we left Friday morning and a trail run on mountain bike trails Saturday. Traverse is Hilly (Michigan Hilly not Guatemala of Colorada Hilly) so I got to get some good hill work in. I wished I would brought my trail shoes and not my Zoots, my feet got pretty beat up. Tomorrow back to Zacapa and working in my friend's tienda. Charlotte- So happy to hear about your son! That is such a tough age as it is. I am glad he is finding his place, and giving Mom some peace. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Entering myself into the challenge for the month, I've been slacking so hard I've actually been slightly embarrassed to come around to the board! But I'm trying to crawl back onto the wagon now and I'm going to use this challenge as a way to train through this tough, motivationally challenging month. My first real important race of the season is end of August, a HIM, and I'm really wanting to break 6 hours there which is going to be a longshot for me, unless I can get my bike speed up over that distance and bust out a 2:00-2:15 run. So I'd better get busy! Chris, I don't know of a particular tube, but would those liners you can place inside the tire work? Or at least help a little? Nothing is puncture proof, some clincher are more resistant but at the expense of rotational weight, which is VERY important on a wheel. If you train with those, it is better to take them off on race day and put different, lighter tires.A good brand is the Vittoria 150TPI casing, hard to puncture (I haven't had a flat in well over a year, I hope I don't jinx it now). |
