Regular 789 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed truly whatever works for you is best. I like to use Perform because I don't depend on me but what's on the course. Bottles are dropped, nutrition lost, they may lose your special needs bag, etc. if you use what's on the race it is one less worry but that is a personal approach. Only one bottle of Perpetuem seems VERY LITTLE. Unless you make it thicker than butter you will not have enough calories. Remember that you should be aiming for about 350 an hour if not more if you can handle it. Ahhh good point on special needs bag lost, dropped bottles on the course. I really never thought about that stuff. I had planned on 1st half of bike 1 bottle of perpeteum plus powerbar performance, and second half 1 bottle of perpeteum mixed from special needs and then gels and energy blasts. I am aiming for about 300 calories based upon what I have practiced with in the past. Going higher seems to make me unhappy. But perhaps I've not used the right combination of liquid/solids. Guess I will have to rethink my strategy and start attempting to use perform more. Thank you for the tips/advice on lost stuff. Edited by spie34 2013-04-09 10:39 PM |

Master 1780 Boynton Beach, FL | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Happy to report that my run was good, no hip pain. So race is on! Not expecting much from it, 1 month off training due to illness/injury just before the race is never a good plan; but will take it easy, enjoy it, and maybe try a few things (regarding both bike pace and run pace) considering that I will be happy to finish in one piece. |

Rode the bike leg of my race in that outfit at 35 degrees and top speed of 34 mph. Warm as can be. My issue is always cold hands. Ran this morning at 60+ degrees. First run in shorts and a t-shirt. What a treat. |

See if you can find a cheap pair of gloves at the local running store that are on clearance and toss them halfway thru once you and the weather warm up. High of 42 the day of. Assuming 33 degrees at race start. Who thinks I should rock shorts or tights? I'd wear tights if it was me but I don't like direct cold on my skin. Go to the dollar store to get cotton gloves. It is what I use most of the winter unless it dips down into the teens and even then I'll double up the cotton gloves at times. Good thing about those is you can take them off and run with them in your hands and they aren't super bulky. Edited by spie34 2013-04-11 1:48 PM |

If you want, buy some cheap gloves you can discard a mile into it. Also, maybe wear a black plastic garbage bag (cut a hole for your head, but not your arms) and discard just before the race starts. You will be cold at the beginning, but you will live and you wont' regret it two or three miles in. |

Front cabling has frayed a little bit and come out of its housing for an inch and a half or so. Basically now I can't shift my FD into the big ring, so i'm stuck on small (which isn't all bad.) Race on sunday... is there anything short term I can do? Ultimately I can ride on it because it's only the big chainring, and I can still use my RD fine... but if there's something I can do short of fully replacing them at the moment that'd be great. |

They say dress like you would if it were 20 degrees warmer. I like compression tights at those temps, but you are probably acclimated to it so shorts and compression socks will probably be fine. I'm so excited that it's finally here for you!

Thanks all for the comments. I'm really apprehensive. Legs haven't felt good for a couple weeks but who knows maybe its just psychological. With everything going on at work and family, stress levels have been high and workouts have been skipped, slacked on, etc. Really just going to try to fixate on my last quote in my sig line below. Last year's run was as follows:
Hit a wall around mile 10. Ran a clean race with Garmin showing total distance of 13.12 and pace of 7:54. Hope to best that pace this time. If I can hang on at the end of the run this year then that should be achievable. See how I feel at miles 7 through 9 and dial back or go the same as last year? |

LMAO as reading that. Forecast is now: "Overcast with a chance of snow and a chance of rain in the morning, then mostly cloudy with a chance of snow and a chance of rain. High of 43F. Breezy. Winds from the WSW at 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Chance of snow 50%." So still crap - just not 3" of snow and hail. That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger! |

Had to apply for a new US passport for our daughter at the consulate and made it a holiday. Great weather, unlike some of you guys have... We are re-discovering the city, it is a fantastic place. If you ever have a chance, come here, get on a ferry, see the harbour with all the quiet bays and anchorages, the scenery is out of this world. Just damn expensive... Oh, went for a 10k run: hotel, circular keys, harbour bridge, across to the other side, back, around the opera, back to the hotel. The most scenic run ever! Edited by markz 2013-04-13 3:20 PM |

Well can you ride only in your big ring? I don't know the bike course you are on so not sure if that would be an option. If so you could set the limiter to not drop into the small ring I think. Also how good of LBS is there that could get you in to just get it fixed? |

Remember the old adage - sh@t happens. Some you can control (like diet) others you can't (like weather). It sucks that distance races don't come with asterisks like - what a fricking cold day, hilly course etc. The finishing time doesn't reflect your effort exerted or the hurdles overcome. You race yourself. Remember why you are at the starting line and relish it. |

Also how good of LBS is there that could get you in to just get it fixed? Course is pretty dang flat, so I don't think it'll be a major issue for the time being. As of now, it should be fine not dropping into the small ring, and i'll have to scout out if there's anything nearby the race as far as LBS/people at the expo who'd take a look. Figured that i'd eventually just go to LBS and have it replaced, but obviously race is sunday so I wasn't sure if there was a quick fix or anything to get it to last until then. |
