Artemis - 2007-09-27 11:21 AM Hey Tan! I seem to miss out on all the exciting days. Stupid busy lab days.

This is what is STUPID:

http://www.sacbee.com/101/story/401623.html

I'm going to freeze to death this winter. I'm already cold and its like what, the first week of fall?

*snerk*

Says he who just yesterday was talking about having lived through the frigid Iowa winters.

That said, the idea of a ban on using wood-burning fireplaces does strike me as ridiculous.

HA!  I'd love to see some idiot try that here in the Midwest.

Just wondering.

See, i'm torn on things like that. i don't like the idea of everything being so tightly regulated, but my lungs have a different view of that matter. i don't know where i officially stand on the issue. i love the heat and smell of wood burning stoves, but i do like breathing, too, so...

Semi-related: A few months ago, Walgreens switched my rescue inhaler. Apparently my old one was using CFC propellants, and they don't want us wheezy folks destroying the ozone layer...

No they leave that to the old farts. And by old farts I meant that literally -- methane from cows are a cause of the depleted ozone layer. Along with Dr. Evil's ``lazer'' ...

Yeah, i know. Stuff like that makes me laugh. My little inhaler (that i theoretically should hardly ever use) versus some cow's butt.

Yeah, and there are arguably other practices that do more to damage air quality than burning wood to heat one's house (or using CFC-propelled inhalers). Like burning rice fields: apparently that's a bigger problem near Sacramento than even the busiest night of fireplace-using.

That sucks! I love fireplaces. My in-laws actually heat most of their house in the winter using a wood stove. Can't imagine what would happen if they tried to pass something like that where they worked.

And I have asthma, too.  I just like being able to burn things in my house.

Not at all, it just seems that in this case, there are things that could be done to improve the air quality more (e.g. could they not compost whatever it is they're burning in the rice fields, and then use the composted material to fertilize other fields?), without potentially causing problems for people who use wood to heat their homes.
