I know of at least one stud racing this weekend and it's going to be quite a show!  Anyone else ready to give it 110%?  If so, spill the details!

If you're not racing, how're you holding up so far this season?  mentally? physically?  what do you need help with?

I'm racing tomorrow night (Thursday) in a local 5 miler, the Summer Solstice Run.  I will be running with a number of people from my running club and it will be my youngest daughters first race with me so I am looking forward to it.  The bonus is that lal finishers get a watermelon.

From Chrissie's book:

There is a lot of repetitive activity in an athlete's life, particularly in ironman, and you need to learn to handle it.  The best way of improving your capacity to endure boredom is to endure boredom.  Spend time training on your own and challenge your mind to stay focused. ...You should maintain the same level of concentration in training as you would when racing.  It's no use imagining you will miraculously develop that focus on race day. It won't happen, and you will have neglected a fundamental part of your program.  You wouldn't go into a race without any physical training, so why would you go in without any mental?

Food for thought

I like this, I spend all day at work talking to people and so I'm one of those antisocial types who really enjoys training on my own. I can see how people who rely on the group to get through a long run or ride must find IM really isolating.

No racing for me, just an easy 1 hour run on Sunday; it's been a long time since I've only had to run that far on a weekend!

I'm sort of enjoying my taper but I'm still struggling a bit with my cold and I'm finding it hard to believe that somehow I'll be super- fit and marathon ready in 10 days time... I keep telling myself that this is a tried and tested method and to just have faith in it!

Just 'Aussie' Google "taper madness" and spend some of your new found extra time reading the hundreds of articles on the subject.  Some of the science behind the phenomenon is interesting.

Good Luck!

A little late, but I am racing this sunday! Before anyone yells at me let me clarify. I was signed up to do this sprint quite awhile ago. Knowing I cannot run I asked the RD and the race company if I could do it as a relay. They said yes. I asked a good friend that has the same coach if she would do the run. She is one of those runners that looks like they are floating above the ground when they run. Laurie consulted with our coach and said yes. So we changed the registration to the OSB Senior relay team. I am swimming and biking. Both of which are ok for me.

BTW OSB is our coach's business name (one step beyond) but for me stands for old, slow and bald.

As far as how I am holding up, well it has been a season of challenges for me. The shingles messed up my training and weight pretty good. Once I got over that I have taken steps to fix my knee. O have my 2nd PT appointment today and I have been diligent about the exercise! I have also shed about 10 lbs. with more to come. So while I was down for awhile I am rebounding with my sites set clearly on Nov. 3!

Thanks folks. Boy my typing stinks! Funny thing is I realized I can hammer the bike now as I do not have to save anything for the run! My lack of riding lately may have some impact on that though.

I did that too last month when I wasn't abele to run. When you have signed up to do it yourself and now you have to relay, the hard part is when you come into T2 and they tell you to have a good run.

But yes, HAMMER the bike!

Question, I will be in Syracuse this weekend and the 70.3 Syracuse race is this Sunday. I have a 3 hour bike ride scheduled for this weekend. Is it wrong or frowned upon for me to ride the course during the race? I wont use any of the aid stations but would like to use the course for the markings.

some food for thought...

what happens if you have a n accident with a racer and their day ends right there?

if you have a flat or worse (heaven forbid) i don't think the race personnel will take the time to determine if you are a participant.  you and i know the race number not present on your bike will indicate this.  but they won't.  so if this happens you just took resources away from the racers.

one of the attorneys in this group will know more than me, but i wonder if its even legal for you to be ride the course.  i don't know what the permits say.

all that said, imho... yeah, bad form.  i'd search cycling clubs like this for group rides, search  map my ride, post a question in the NY forum about other rides in the area...  there is plenty of other road out there.  and besides, why on earth would you want to hang out with 2000 triathletes if you don't have to???

What do you mean for the markings?

Personally I wouldn't consider it. Too many possibilities of bad things happening. Accidents, etc.

Plus I would dislike being in a 'race' enviornment when I am not racing. People cheering you on,etc.

I am not sure of the legalities of riding the course during the race, but the prior issues against riding it during the race are valid. Add to those the fact that the officials may not know you are not racing and someone could get a penalty for drafting if they are too close to you. Can you ride the course the day before or after? The markings are likely to be there then and all the other issues go away.

I agree with Trevor and John.  Another possible option could be to ride the bike course (or a portion)  backwards (ie in the oposite direction). I saw numerous riders out during my HIM on Saturday but it was for a loop course, not an out and back.

I know of at least one stud racing this weekend and it's going to be quite a show!  Anyone else ready to give it 110%?  If so, spill the details!

If you're not racing, how're you holding up so far this season?  mentally? physically?  what do you need help with?

I'm racing a marathon in Seattle this weekend! My goal is BQ minus enough minutes to actually get in, and my plan is to stick to a nice steady pace all the way through. The weather is looking awesome: 53F at the start and high of 61F. It will probably rain, but I'll take rain over heat any day!

Good luck to all the other racers, and happy training to everyone else!

Hey, guys!

The Runner's World BIG BOOK of Marathon and Half Marathon Training is out!  and I'm in it!  Page 186 - pretty cool.  not an exact replication of the conversation I had with the editor, but pretty dang close.

Autographs, anyone?  Wink

Love the sign idea!!

Ryan and I are talking about trying to ride to somewhere on the course to cheer on Julia. But no ride if raining for me... We are still hatching plans! Sadly, traffic is a beeeeyatch with 40,000 (or is it 80,000?) runners, so just getting somewhere to cheer is a real PITA. I WILL see Julia while she's here!!

GO JULIA!!!!! I'm so glad we're not having one of our rare sunny days on race day. I think we've had 4 now in June, but who's counting?!

Go, Julia!!!  sounds like a perfect plan for a perfect race!  With the new standards, I bet you need 5 minutes or less as a buffer, but my advice would to be go as fast as you can.  Wink

I'm doing Bike MS on saturday.  Hopefully everything will go good and I will finish the 100 mile course.  I'm riding on a team with my brother in law who are faster than me. I going to go IM pace and work on nutrition. And have some fun.
