Im planning an EASY 20-30min run on Fri morning before the Underwear run (not running, watching the chicas) Then an Easy 20ish min swim/bike on Sat morning before checking in the ride. Staying at the Galt House also, would love company.

Underpants Run is on Saturday not Friday Kiss

What does everyone think about pink boy shorts? Regular bra vs. sports bra? Compression socks (I have pink ones of course)? Trying to decide what direction to go here...

Everyone: I'm not getting in until noonish Friday. I'm going to packet-pickup first then maybe ride in afternoon. I'll probably drive out to Shiloh Methodist Church @1694 and ride from there. I want to check a couple things on the out and back. Also want to ride the hwy393 section once again.

Somebody please explain to me why I've gone beyond nervous to being a little scared of this race, a dream of not knowing if I finished has contributed to this.?????? Also again I have a suite at gaunt house and now am the only one going, no family. If anyone is interested in staying at the host hotel for less that $100 a night please let me know. ..... Adam

This will be my first Ironman and I'm wondering what my wife can do while I'm racing.  Are there any other spouses looking for someone to hang out with during the race?  Failing that, do you have any advice for her with what to do with her time? Thanks!

For my Ironman last year I made a suggested agenda for my cheerleaders - told them they were free to follow it or not, but they said it really helped them structure their day. Went something like this:

Page 1: Getting from hotel to race start (map and directions)
Page 2: Swim start map, race start time, anticipated finish time, anticipated T1 time
Page 3: Getting to the bike course (map and directions from swim start)
Page 4: Seeing Lisa on the bike course - map to 3 viewing areas and anticipated arrival times
Page 5: Lunch options and maps
Page 6: More bike spectating or down time - your choice (more bike maps and anticipated arrival times for Loop 2)
Page 7: Running a marathon - run map and projected times at good viewing areas - also suggested places to eat dinner along the run course

I think your spectator guide is a good idea for anyone Lisa. I did something similar for my family as well. At minimum we owe it to our "fans" to give them projected times. I have provided projected times for if I'm going fast, if it's average, or if it's a less than stellar situation. As far as what to do while I'm out there, my family has been here before, so they have an idea of what they might do. It might largely depend on what our 3-year-old is up for.

I'm doing a 2.4 mile swim Friday for confidence, then a 40 mile ride on Sunday. Those we be my last long-ish workouts. Swam 1.2 this morning and it went ok. The downside is that our low night-time temperatures have made our lake much less Ohio River-ish.

Looking for anyone that wants to run or ride on Friday or Saturday.
A buddy of mine is doing the race and I am going to volunteer. I have my own race at the end of September, so I am definetly looking for some training while I am there.
Maybe we can make arrangements to meet up as a group.

I spoke with a friend who raced last year and he said there were no aid stations after mile 80 of the bike.  30 miles seems like a long way to go without aid, so maybe they've added some towards the end of the course this year?

btw...does anyone know what the current river temp is?  Should I even consider bringing a wetsuit?  I heard it was 80+ last year, but I'd hate for it to end up being wetsuit legal and not have one.  Ocean temps are hovering around 65 here, so I've been back in a wetsuit for the past week or so.

2 miles in the ocean last night and just wrapped up a 70/10 brick.  Felt sluggish after about 20-30 miles on the bike and the run was not pretty.  Trail run at altitude again tomorrow morning and then another OWS at noon - looks like we're going for 2.5.  It will be good to knock out an over-distance swim.  It's been a while since I've done that and if nothing else, I think it will help mentally.  Perfect weather for racing here - 70s and overcast all day on the coast.  Not so good for heat training.  Oh well...back into the furnace again on Monday morning.

Current water temp of the Ohio River is a little above 85 degree. The data was taken from USGS Kentucky Water Science center.

I would not bother bringing your wetsuit.

As for the aid stations. I think your buddy might have missed a couple. It appears (from both the 2010 & 2011 athletes guide) that in the last 30 miles of the race there are 2. Could he have missed them? I know last year that some ran out of water but I don't think that they shuttered them.

Thanks for the info.  Looks like I'll leave the wetsuit at home.  I'll bring my speedsuit and decide whether or not to wear it after the practice swim.

Hopefully, they will have water every 10 miles as mentioned in the Athlete Guide.  I have 3 spots for bottles on the bike and will plan to leave the one on my down tube open for water from the aid stations.

I'm sure this has already been discussed, but is there a definitive elevation gain for the bike course?  I checked out Garmin Connect and it seems to range from 3,400' to 6,000' of total climbing.  My guess is somewhere around 4,000'?

I just wanted to pop in and say good luck to you all.  I'm not doing it, but my dad is.

It's been a pleasure following all your posts, and relaying some good info on to my dad.  I hope that you all have a great race!!!

I have spectated at about 4 Ironman's now, and I will say that spectating is not easy at all.

That being said, give her a list of your times, and where you will be at those times.  Make sure she knows that there will be a lot of standing around and waiting,  only to see you for a few seconds.  It's tough, but rewarding for both the athlete and the spectator in the end.

I'm feeling incredibly nervous and NOT ready. Last night, I woke up multiple times having terrible dreams about the race.  In training, my runs feel like they are getting worse. i feel like i'm in no better shape than i was 6 mos ago when i started this journey...actually in terms of running i am worse off (due to injury).  I thought during taper i was supposed to feel rested and recovered? Saturday's 2 hr run was awful and last night's jog in the park was more lumbering than running.  I feel like i have to grab myself by the neck and drag myself to the pool for these final swims (um...why no 2 wk taper for swim??).  Cycling is the only part I'm still enjoying. I guess it's a good thing it is the LONGEST part of the race? (i hope)  Groan, sorry to be a downer but needed to share for anyone else not feeling super going into this!

Emily I think it's totally normal to feel that way! Both "am I ready?" and sluggish in taper.

Couple of things I'm focusing on in the next 11 (WHAT?!) days:

- DIET... putting good foods in my body. Veggies/greens, whole grains, etc.
- HYDRATION... plenty of water and no alcohol till after the race
- REST... lots of sleep every night - not negotiable.
- VISUALIZATION... "seeing" each portion of the race in a positive light (including 4th Street Live and the finish line)
- RELAX... trying not to freak out about the small stuff. Plan and prepare is the best I can do at this point.
- TRUST in the plan... you will get there - trust that you will.

What's the biggest lesson you learned in training for Ironman Louisville?

Mine: Preride the bike course if possible. Reading about the IM Louisville course did not do it justice. I had a new appreciation of the relentless rollers and heat issues after riding the course this year. Just did it once but it made me reassess my pacing, gearing, nutrition. I definitely would have fried myself on the bike without this experience.

Doc

HalfironMike: Yeah, I got about 4000ft gain.

Lisac: I like that idea. I may plagiarize that agenda.

I have seen a few comments about having a spare tube and CO2 in the bike special needs bag.  In the athlete guide I believe it mentioned all unclaimed bags are disposed of when the rest stop closes.  A tube and CO2 doesn't cost that much but it seems like a waste. What is everyones take on this??

I am in same boat as you are Emily. I have very bad hip bursitis at the moment and have shut down on all biking and running until KY. I have been getting ART treatment on my hip to work through the pain but I am determined. I promised myself that I'm going to show up to the race and take each leg of the race at a time. Who knows what will happen. I just pray the months prior to my injury on August 1st will get me there. Optimism is true moral courage.

Only put items in special needs bags that you don't mind never seeing again. I guess it depends on what you are willing to sacrifice. I used the special needs bags for IMWI, but did not for IMLOU '09. I was comfortable in '09 and will be taking the same approach this time around. However, to each his own. Do what makes you comfortable. The less stress, the better.

BGANNAWAY - 2011-08-17 4:35 PM What's the biggest lesson you learned in training for Ironman Louisville?

The second time I rode the bike course this summer I had a total meltdown after the 112 bike.  Heat exhaustion put me in the hospital with acute kidney failure.  Hence what I learned - I had to double the amounts of fluids I was taking in on the bike.  My sweat rate is 4.5 lbs per hour, and I only weigh 155.  Subsequent 112's in similar conditions have been much better and my runouts have improved dramatically.  Hydration, hydration, hydration....
