Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Which brings me to my question for everyone: How do you deal with hunger after long training days? I swam 40 mins Saturday and rode almost 2 hours, and I wasn't that hungry Saturday. But then on Sunday it was like I simply could not eat enough food. (In hindsight, I *should* have tracked my calories those days to make sure I ate enough Saturday, and I'm going to get better about doing that.) Does that happen to other people, too? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What am I doing? Eating my lunch and getting caught up on the latest BT news -- it's called multiplexing! This week I have spent running from meeting to meeting to meeting, with a little bit of training in between. I think I'm going to start logging my "running to meetings" as training -- do you think that's allowable? I had a very unsuccessful "track" workout yesterday. I showed up for this workout in a lousy mood from work, and the track was packed! We couldn't do speedwork, which was ok with me. We took off on a path up toward the fighter squadron. Dan still pushed me harder than I would have pushed myself, but in retrospect I guess I am disappointed that we couldn't run on the track. So tomorrow morning I have to drop my dh at the airport very early, so I think I'll go to the track before work and try it on my own. I don't know if all of you have visited Julie S's log, but she wrote a very entertaining blurb on her race weekend. And we are all thankful to have her back with her head intact!

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Offthegrid - 2009-03-17 7:22 AM OK, now some good news everyone! I wanted to post last night but didn't have the chance. The swimming lessons are going REALLY well!!! The instructor (and her friend) last night pointed out that I really kick with my legs very far apart, creating drag. I tried to cut that down, and I could feel a difference right away. If I can find my therapy band, I'm going to tie my legs up to swim. Ha ha ha. She also videotaped us with her cell phone and is going to e-mail them to us. Roomie said she got hers, but not mine yet? I don't want everyone on BT seeing my huge behind, though. (Frankly, I'm glad *I* don't have to look at it. Ha ha ha!) Also this morning I had NO pain in my foot. So that's going really well as well. I really cannot stop raving about triggers points and the self-treatment of pain. This stuff is amazing. OH MY GOD ! kicking my feet too wide apart is one of the things I was told I should work on, and I do not have small behind, so if you have not seen this yet, take a look at my blog www.jdhalter.blogspot.com and you can see the video of me and my HORRIBLE form ! I used it to work on thigns today, but it was painful to look at how badly I was swimming !! HOWEVER I can use it now and try to fix what I know is wrong ! You are not alone on the wide kicky thing ! lol |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() run_yc_run - 2009-03-18 9:41 AM chipit muffin - 2009-03-17 4:35 PM Speaking of HM how slow and little should i start of on my going back to running after 2 weeks of no running and a half mary in 9 weeks? My long run were 7 miles and last total (week) milage was around 15 miles. Thanks Cheri for sending all that heat today, it was 8C this afternoon...but still no running for me so i can heal WAAAAAAAHAAAAAARG! Were you running for the full time or doing 10/1 a la Running Room? When you are ready I would definitely be doing the run/walk combination so that you can build endurance to complete the distance. Throwing in walk components will allow you to go that much further. While you are waiting to run- definitely walk- if you can do some fast paced walking, all the better. Also consider water-running/cycling/elliptical- a few summers ago, I had a stress fracture but was committed to doing my sister's first full marathon with her so I kept the endurance up with pool run sessions and long bike sessions. I got the go ahead (though a little reluctant) from my doc 4 wks before the race. Take it easy and keep smilin'! I agree completely on the value of run/walk, especially when starting out. I walk some part of all but my shortest runs (5k or less) throughout the season and I don't have any problem running a whole 10k. I did start taking walk breaks in my HM last weekend, but not until around mile 9. When I'm first starting to build, I make myself do a timed cycle (4 min run/1 min walk, for example), but as I build endurance, I tend to switch to just walk 15-30 sec when my HR goes above my workout specific target. I almost always have my watch set to alert me when I need to walk, one way or another. I have a tendency to just lope along, watching the birds and buuny rabbits, without paying attention to breathing or pain or fatigue, so I need those beeping reminders! Take it slow, Isabelle, you've got plenty of base and plenty of time to build using the 10% rule. Trish |

LOL I am not all caught up on the posts, but I've been through a few adn I'm off to the trainign logs. Hugs and thanks for the ispires you have left for me ! Julie, I completely forgot, but I watched your video a few days ago and I don't think you look too bad. I was very impressed that you looked almost exactly the same from beginning to end - most people's strokes deteriorate badly as they tire. It looks to me like you're turning your head way too far, probably because you're not really convinced you're not going to get a lungful of pool water. This is perfectly normal for beginners - water is not good for lungs! I think, as you gain confidence, you'll straighten out naturally (not that drills and technical work aren't useful). The biggest problem with tubing your feet is that you'll put a lot of strain on your upper body and risk shoulder injury. It doesn't really help with the streamlining, either because you end up wiggling your hips around to get your head where it needs to be. I'd suggest working on keeping that chin tucked into your armpit when you breathe and make yourself glide at the very beginning of each stroke - catchup drills really help with this. Make sure you keep kicking when you're not actively pulling. We've used a drill that goes like this: kick 1/2 length, then stroke left, kick 6 beats, stroke right, kick 6 beats, stroke left with a breath, kick 6 beats, etc. to the end of the pool. Rest completely, then repeat. It really gets you gliding and streamlining. Don't ever try to do drills or technical work when you're tired! That's enough for today! You're doing great and I admire how hard you work at it. Trish |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I SWAM 2,000 YARDS TODAY!!! I'm so super psyched. AND, my 100-yard warmup was 10 seconds faster than my all-out 100 last week and is 30 seconds faster than my warmup last week. On my next swim, I'm anxious to time an all-out 100. Keeping my legs closer together -- along with my breathing improvement -- has really done the trick. Next up I'll have to master flip turns. ![]() |

(In hindsight, I *should* have tracked my calories those days to make sure I ate enough Saturday, and I'm going to get better about doing that.) Does that happen to other people, too? Great day! I can't believe that you wouldn't be hungry...I am always famished after my workouts- no matter the length or intensity! The toughest thing for me is not to eat too much. A couple of years ago, they came up with the research that you should try to eat a combination of carbs and protein in a 4:1 ratio within 30 minutes of finishing a hard/long workout. It is the window for your body to replenish some of the glycogen stores and begin muscle repair and recovery. There are some $$$ sport drinks that have the ideal ratio but chocolate milk will also do the trick. As you likely already know for weight loss, calories in< calories used BUT if you don't eat, your body will conserve energy thinking that it might not get more food later. This is one the reasons that breakfast is a good thing. So do try to eat something post workout- besides you have earned it! |

They don't have to touch but it's the thought that should get the legs closer. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning everyone! I am now convinced that the way to have a great workout is to do it under adverse conditions. Last night I didn't get much sleep at all -- laid awake for two hours after I went to bed, then woke up about every 15 minutes after that. Then I had to get up very early to take my dh to the airport. I decided to try to get the track workout in that got messed up on Tuesday. After about a half mile on the track, about 200 Army EOD trainees showed up. I thought I was in for it! But we played nicely and we all get our workouts in. I usually do intervals with Torture Dan, but today I managed it alone. Not sure if I'll be able to do this every week, but it sure felt good today. |
