Regular 99 Holland, Mich. | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread In agreement with what a lot of you have already said quite well: Though I haven't had the time and money to get down to ride the IM Louisville course this summer, I support the super-hydration approach. It may mean stopping for the porta at times, bet hey, better that than the alternative. Also, Endurolytes have kept me going through some pretty hot, saucy rides up in Michigan this summer. I pretty much have to hose down the bike when I get back or the whole thing is salt-encrusted. I plan to play it pretty cool and easier than usual on the bike. |

The second time I rode the bike course this summer I had a total meltdown after the 112 bike. Heat exhaustion put me in the hospital with acute kidney failure. Hence what I learned - I had to double the amounts of fluids I was taking in on the bike. My sweat rate is 4.5 lbs per hour, and I only weigh 155. Subsequent 112's in similar conditions have been much better and my runouts have improved dramatically. Hydration, hydration, hydration.... The weekend I spent in Louisville earlier this month was the single best thing I did in all of my training (even though it was a 9 hour drive one way). I heard about the hills and I thought that the course would be no problem since it is pretty hilly here in the "Sandhills" region of NC. I got a real eye opener after riding the entire course in training. It also gave me confidence in my nutrition plan. When I ran the course the next day (the bridge and 1 out & back) it gave me that "I am ready" feeling that many of you have proclaimed. As for the special needs bag, I am going to stock it like my LBS. Since this is my 1st IM, I want to finish no matter what. Not only am I putting in an extra tube and CO2, I'm putting in an extra tire ($7 el cheapo tire from bonktown) and all the free Hammer Gel samples that I have saved up from my local races. See y'all in Louisville! Alan |

26 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Feslern and Emily - maybe this info will make you feel better. My sisters boyfriend is an endurance nut. He has run a marathon 4 times in day and competes regularly in 100 milers. For his first 100 miler, he got hurt and hadcto shut it down 4 weeks prior to the event. He said it was one of his best races ever. I haven't been able to run since Aug 5th due to a calf injury. He keeps telling me not to worry that I will be fine. The 5.5 mos of work prior to that should be plenty. He feels most of the time people over train going into these events. He is mad at me that I have been continuing to ride on my leg. He feels I should have shut it down last week. Trust me- I would be sleeping a whole lot better if I could have been running for the past 10 days. It's my first IM and not the way I wanted to go into it. As my coach said, there's nothing you can do so embrace the uncertainty. I guess it's either that or try to get in touch with that shady Canadian doc Tiger Woods used. |

I guess it depends on what you are willing to sacrifice. I used the special needs bags for IMWI, but did not for IMLOU '09. I was comfortable in '09 and will be taking the same approach this time around. However, to each his own. Do what makes you comfortable. The less stress, the better. Hmmm...Things I won't mind never seeing agin...I hope its a big bag right off the bat I can think of a few things I never want to see like the fat that sits over my hips Thanks for the info everyone. Just got done waxing the bike. Its gets picked up by TriBikeTransport tomorrow. It's coming quick and I'm definitely in the "not feeling ready" category. My last longish day was yesterday with a 70m bike and 1:00 run. It was one ugly run Moving on...

Regular 106 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Curious question for those who also have done Kansas 70.3. How do the hills of the Louisville bike course compare with those of the Kansas course? I'm one that wont be able to ride the course until race day (even though I'm planning to drive it race weekend). Any feedback would be much appreciated. Leave for the event a week from today. |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread gobey- Funny! In that light, I suppose I could find some things as well. For those of you driving the course, just keep in mind, courses typically look longer and more challenging when you drive them, rather than when you ride them (at least from my experience). However, riding it to get geographical, mental notes is good too. |

Justin I've done Kansas every year, and I rode the LOU bike course a few weeks ago. In my mind they were very similar. On the "finger" out and back that you only do once, it's longer/steeper than the worst Kansas hill, but once you get past that the courses seem pretty similar. First and last ~10-15 miles are flat, so don't be fooled by that |

Regular 233 Clermont, Florida | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread OK so now I'm feeling totally unprepared for the hills. Work and life precluded a trip to Louisville to scout it out, but my typical 38 mile route (repeated 1 -3 times depending on the scheduled duration of the ride) included about 2800 ft of climbing in rolling hills. Hope this is enough! This is IM number nine for me and the most apprehension I can remember. Reading about all these epic workouts is daunting. I'm still freaked about the probability of losing my goggles as I jump into the river! At least I'll find out soon how well I have prepared... Everybody travel safe. Tribike Transport doesn't pick up my baby until the 22nd. Luck to all. |

I'm planning on putting my goggle straps UNDER my swim cap - so if they do pop off I won't lose them completely! I have also heard to jump in as "softly" as you can, don't dive or cannonball (all though that is hilarious and I hope to see someone do that!) to decrease the risk of goggle pop-age.

5 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread I'm nervous and confident at the same time. I know I've done enough but when I think of the race (which I am constantly), I still get butterflies. One thing I am struggling with is recovery. No injuries but my legs are still very worn out from 3 weeks of 20+mi runs/100+mi bikes. I took the last three (!!) days off and I'm still sluggish. Thinking of scrapping running and only doing a little biking and good amount of swimming until the race. I'm worried if I don't do anything, I'll lose my cardiovascular fitness. When is everyone planning on carb-loading? Typically, I only do 2 days out for halfs but may start 3-4 for the IronMan. |

I agree a cannonball would be badass. Someone else will have to do that though. Had also considered carrying a spare goggles in the packet of my shorts and may go ahead with that. |

We(me and hubby) are leaving Thursday morning around 7:30 after our oldest gets on the school bus. This way we won't get caught up in Atlanta traffic too bad, its 5 hours to Atlanta from here. I already know we won't be making packet pick-up on Thursday unfortunately, but I plan on being there when it opens on Friday. I go to Starbucks almost daily as it is, so I will definitely be there for the BT meet-up, and will probably be visiting Starbucks 6-8 times over the course of being in Louisville. |

I am freaking out! Really, absolutely panicking. The police came and filed a report but the chances are slim. Plus, I am leaving Philadelphia to go back home to Atlanta Sunday so the time frame is short. I'm not sure what to do. I suppose I have to buy another bike. If anyone has a triathlon bike for sale, please reply....I'm a size 54-56ish. Do any stores in or near Louisville rent bikes? |
