Well done - Congrats!  One race and you're already thinking of going longer - you definitely have the bug

Congrats Steph on your 1st sprint - woohoo - you are a triathlete!

Anne-Marie - good luck in training for your 1st HIM - sounds like a lot of fun!

Sorry I have been out of the loop for a while. Was on vacation for most of June and then have had friends and family visiting non-stop since I got back from vacation.  We leave for Alaska in 1 week! By the time we get there July will almost be over. Still haven't sold our house

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July!

My friend Cathy thinks I should sign up for that and do it with her... after I got up from the floor and my side stitch from laughing subsided... I politely declined but thanked her for thinking I could. One day, sure... not this year. YOU need to let me know how to find you and cheer for you however!!

Hope I don't send you back to the floor by suggesting that perhaps you should look at the international distance portion of MiamiMan.  It's not too much more than a sprint.   At least that's what i keep telling myself as I head towards my first longer race!

Not that much more!!! (getting up slowly) Holy crap! But I just went over it... I have 18 weeks and if I improved enough, I could finish middle of the pack as compared to last years numbers. There, you've done it. ::sigh:: now I have to decide if I want to do it. Hmmmm.

Ann Marie, I love the half IM distance.  Long enough to enjoy every part, short enough to avoid the medical tent after.   Congrats.

Steph, congrats on your first tri.  Awesome, aren't they?

On vacation so getting some workouts in.  Ran 21 miles this week, two 5 milers and a 11 miler and will run after a century (or near century) on Saturday.   One of the 5 milers was a club race.  PR'd. 9:06 pace.  Great for me. The long runs are slow, but they are supposed to be a pace I can maintain to avoid walking.  They are coming along.  Big kick for a guy who was 400 pounds 5 years ago unable to walk up a flight of stairs without dying to be able to kiss the wife and say, "I'm going running for 2 hours," and come home still standing without stopping but briefly to refill my water bottles.

Got the bike back from the shop.  Race wheels, Power Tap, compact crank, new 11/28 SRAM rear cassette.  I ought to be able to climb a barn with that set up.  I'll be doing a long organized ride on Saturday at 75% and 18 mph plus.   Course takes us along a river valley so very hilly...some steep grades, some long gradual ones.  Looking forward to it.

Swim = 2 X.  One endurance 2500 yards and today 2200 yards of speed drills pushed by the coach with 30 secs between intervals.  100s, 400s, 50s.

All good.

Long time out of this site, didn't log many workouts last month but still running.

Now I'm debating if I go another Duathlon or a 10K near my house, they are both same day, but the Duathlon starts at 10am and if the weather is as hot as it is right now it will be a very hard race.

Steph, congrats on your first tri, any race reports on that one?

Thanks Ric! I wasn't sure if that would work or not.

I would do the race that starts the earliest, weather considering. You could do a nice 10k and then stand around and eat bananas before it gets too hot.

Hi Everyone,

I've been on vacation in Maine with my family on Mount Desert Island which is where Arcadia National Park is. Beeeutiful. Everyone should visit Arcadia at some point, its a treasure of a park! I got in a lot of nice hiking and a couple of runs. I've been working on doing shorter runs with more speed and intervals. I have my mile time down by more then a minute on my 4 mile runs! Which brings me to this point: There is a lot of talk around here (on the forums) about waiting until you are a really experienced runner to do speed workouts but I'm finding that if you do strength training to prepare your hips/glutes/core combined with a lot of stretching/rolling and take time to really recover after speed workouts you can do it without getting hurt (at least its so far so good -knock wood). I've only done 3 speed workouts (one a week) but just that has improved my pace substantially this month.

Steph, CONGRATULATIONS! I loved reading your race report, love your attitude that you want to be more aggressive next time. That confidence is awesome.

Hope everyone is having a great summer so far: )

Thanks so much! I will be doing the Trek Women's Triathlon in Clermont ((Orlando) Ann-Marie I'm headed your way!) on September 4th, The swim leg of the Miami Speed Triathlon (my friend CAT will bike and my husband will run) August 28th. There is a Trilogy bonus in September...18th I think. I may do that.

Just signed up for a running program here in Miami. Need to learn to run faster and have a little structure. Now I just need to figure out how to work it into the Tri-Training schedule. I tried in vain to create a custom program on here and it didn't work... after 3 tries....blah! I kinda like a paper and pencil anyway. )

That's just silly. Speed work is the best way to build overall fitness. You need to make it heart rate based and learn your percentages. Do it, you'll be glad you did.

I'm thinking of volunteering for that race, if I do I'll keep an eye out for you.  I don't know what the bike course is for this race, but there are some tough hills in the area; so you may want to ride some of those Miami causeways to prepare!

Robin: Thanks!  I'm trying not to think about the training volume and just enjoy the ride.  Have a great time in Alaska; I've always wanted to visit.

IceMan: You've identified 1 of my major goals - avoid the medical tent!  One of these days I hope to understand what you mean when you discuss bike components, right now if someone were to ask what gear I'm in I'd just describe the size of the rings/cogs (big front ring, medium back cog).  BTW, your workouts look great.

this is my second year running thoughtfully. I've run on and off since I was 15 but never really learned about how to do it. I'd just grind away not really getting anywhere. I couldnt figure out why I would hit a wall at 2 miles even after running 5-6-7 days a week for a couple of years straight. Then 2 years ago I got a trainer to help me with running and that really opened my eyes. Not that I'm a some great runner now, but I was finally able to make advancements.

I started doing speed workouts last year for a sprint tri. I was running 10:30 min miles when i started and ended up doing the 5k run portion of the tri in 25:40 or 8:40min mi which felt great -though I guess I should put "speed" in quotes because even at my fastest I'm not that fast.

Steph, I totally agree that heart rate monitors are super helpful though I stopped using mine... going on feel is working for me at the moment.

I'm learning a lot through Chi-Running clinics here in Miami. One of the things with speed work, like everything else, is that speed is relative, has to be done bit by bit etc. It does NOT mean sprinting (unless you are already FAST). So for me it's based on my heart rate and it's slow compared to most people. My new running coaches (P.R.oject 305) are helping me with my base strength and fitness but there are some speed components. There will be more as I get fitter. We have my Max HR which we got with some stride work....and then I wore my HRM to bed and found my resting HR. It's funny what the Heart does when you're sleeping! My garmin graphs are interesting. My sleep cycles are also shorter than I thought. Anyway... I'm also going to have a gym component. AND last but not least, run in the heat. Slowly, of course. Can't wait to see how it all works out!

I hurt myself by running poorly, now I have good form. I also ran too much too soon...duh. So now that the foot is better, I am ready to do some work getting faster. YAY!

You ARE fast! and you are getting faster! That must feel pretty good!

Hmm... wearing the  Garmin HR monitor to sleep. Should try that.

I've always wanted to officially find out what my "levels" are.  I know I have a very low resting heart rate. (40's)  I should spring for the test, but will need to wait until I'm off this one medication (Weaning off now - 8 more days!)

x2 wearing it to bed... thats a great idea, I'm gunna try that too. I got my resting heart rate by putting it on first thing when I woke up but by the time I got it on and functioning my heart rate had already gone up.

Leaving for Martha's Vineyard MA tomorrow for 10 days. I cant wait to get outta the heat in NYC, its CRAZY HOT and the humidity, fugetaboutit. I set out for a 4 mile run this am and bonked at 3.5 from the heat. Got to remember to hydrate BEFORE I go out.
