I am bummed. It looks like I may have to defer from my marathon in March. The 3 weeks of training I have missed have really eaten into my ability to keep up with the long miles. I am so darn slow to begin with at my best, now.. well it is pretty pitiful. I have a 1/2 marathon in 2 weeks. I am going to use that to see how I am for the full one. But, I was supposed to run 16 miles this weekend and could barely get 5 in. sad.

Hey all!

Anyone need rain?  We have way too much of the stuff.  Managed to get to the pool for the first time this year.  Short set but hey, I was there!

Dorm - congrats on the PM!

SM - yep, love running outdoors.  I have given up TM running as I can only do it when I am on a business trip.

Robin - bummer about the marathon but its better to be prepared.  Lots of chances in the future to get one done in the future.

Made it to the pool this morning.  Short and slow but at least I got it doneSmile

Swim question for everyone.  I understand the concept of keeping a high elbow on the pull, but I can't seem to do it, especially on the strokes when I breathe.  I feel like I'm reaching down for the bottom of the pool instead of pulling straight back.  I'm assuming this has to do with my balance being off since it's not as bad when I use a pull buoy.  So how do I fix it?  Any ideas for me?

Janet ... you might check out this video on how the 'pull' should look.  It's hard to know how we look unless someone takes a vid for us to see.  One mental picture for me is the stroke sort-of midway morphs into a 'push' instead of a 'pull'.  I also try to 'flip' the water with my fingers at the end of the stroke, just as the hand exits the water.

Had a PB with running this evening.  The long timers in the group who know me, know had bad I hate (loathe) running.  But I'm working out of town thru Friday and I brought training clothes.  So I suited up tonight and did 3 miles on the T'mill in 12:10 pace.  I know this is snails pace compared to many, but I am pretty happy with this.  My goal for the March race is to avg ~10:00 pace.   I have committed to improve my running and the biggest thing that tastes good about it is knowing how much it will improve the swim and bike legs.

Oh and for all the new ones in the group ... I need to pass along the rules for cycling ,,, yes there are rules and key ones are rules 5, 10 and 20

Rules of cycling: http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/

Just getting on the treadmill while traveling is a huge win in my book. Nice job!

Sorry to hear that Robin but no sense doing a race that long under trained. You can fake it on shorter races, not so much on longer ones.

Dorm loved the rules and congrats on the run time!Robin I know the feeling I had to drop a race all together just because I would not have enough time to get ready. But everything works out for the best as long as we train hard and keep our attitude in the right place. I am bummed out with training. I have inventory this month and hours are long and energy levels low. So I am not getting much done as far and training is concerned. I guess it is a good thing but I feel guilty for not getting out there. Oh well! Bit on a brighter note I may have the wife convenced to join th local YMCA next month. This would make it a whole lot easier to work on my swim.

Sounds like you have some form issues to deal with.  If things get easier with the buoy (it still does for me a little) my guess is your legs are dropping throwing your balance off.  The pull buoy puts your body in a much better position.  Without the buoy you are effectively swiming up hill.  I am definitely not the resident fish here but two technics I was taught to help balance.  First, practice pushing your belly button thru your back.  Funny thought but it really helped me get my legs up.  I did this along with the concept of swimming downhill, meaning pushing your chest down to force your legs up.

Lastly, when I was working on high elbow technic I used both the buoy (so I could concentrate on my form) and paddles to help me develop a better catch.  I am not fast but getting there.  Hope this helps and hopefully one of our resident fishes will chime in.

Hey Janet,On the subject of the pull. I make a point to do one arm drills as part of my warm up: make sure you leave the other hand out front; and make a point to take your pull hand out of the water before it reaches your hip. You will get a real feel for the pull. Tracy

Strat...I know the feeling. My wife is pregnant, but we are at the beginning of the pregnancy and she is not feeling well. I am about to start getting my workouts at about 5 in the a.m. so that i can help her out with out daughter and still get my workouts in when everyone is asleep. And I am not a morning person! You will certainly have your hands full after the two little ones are born. Good luck with your new goals. This brings me to my question. I am working on putting my schedule together and had some questions on bike. I will be limited to 1 hour on the trainer 3xs a week. Bike is a weak point for me and i would like to improve it. The good thing I know there is a ton of room for improvement. I have done one sprint and and averaged about 16 mph. My next race will also be a sprint and I have been maintaining since I ran the last sprint in October. What is the best way to get the most out of this 1 hour on the trainer or a good program to use as guidelines? I do have a heart rate monitor that I can use to measure. I was also thinking about getting the cadence/speed sensor that goes along with my garmin watch. Any advice? Also, if anyone knows why i cant get paragraphs when posting from my ipad, im sure everyone would appreciate that.

Hi,
I am an original member of the group but have been MIA for a short while due some life stresses. I saw this post and wanted to help though. Go to the settings icon at the top of the page. After hitting it, click on to your forum settings and turn off the rich blog editor whenever you are posting from an Ipad or Iphone. I personally just leave mine turned off all the time. It will fix the paragraph formatting problems. Let me know if this doesn't make sense.
And welcome to the group. It's wonderful to see new members. I will repost my info soon as I haven't introduced myself to any of the new members yet.

Shelly - Glad to see you back!  Hope things are better for you.

FYI, an online store called the Tri shop is having a sale on Huub wetsuits - $99 for short sleeve and $149 for long. Plus free shipping.  I don't know much about the Huub wetsuits but a good deal along with the usual Xterra wetsuit sales.

Rode 18 miles on Sunday with a lady friend; took two hours but that's the furthest I've ridden ever and we weren't trying to kill it, just ride.  Tonight did 6 in 31 minutes.  Pushed myself.  Want to get to the point where I'll finish my bike in May in under 60 minutes.

Rainy here the last two days so glad to get out this afternoon.  Forecast is for more rain this weekend.  Two weeks to getting shoes and start the run portion of the training.Cool

Minor wreck on the bike today about 3/4 of a mile into my ride but still managed to get 3 miles on the bike and another 2-1/2 mile run in before my hour was up on my lunch. Roads were a little slippery from the misting rain we had all morning.

Blue - nice job!

Brett - take care.

SM - there is an article in this months Triathlete mag about head position and swimming.  If you don't get that mag let me know and maybe I can scan the article or maybe its online.

Myself, got 35 mins on the trainer and about to head off for a one mile run with the pup.  Catch ya later!

Keep training!!!!

Fitmomma, Look at me Um posting in paragraphs from my ipad!! Thanks for the help!

Got some real rookie questions here for those who do heart rate training. I'm doing the winter cycling plan and am very confused. Here's an example of where I am confused:

The plan says do:
10 '@68-73%, 5' alternating 30"@100% and 30"@68-73%.

If my CP is 155, does this mean do 10 min at 113 bpm the alternate 30 sec at 155 bpm and 30 sec at 113 bpm?

I am a little confused because it takes longer than 30 seconds for my heart rate to get do to 113 from 155.

Does it just mean work as hard as I would to keep my Heart rate at 113 like I did in the initial warmup? Am I way off base on my understanding? Is any of this even making sense?

Yes you have it right.  Training with HR is more about keeping in a range and understanding effort level.  So for the intervals it will be 30 seconds at 100% then 30 sec recovery at an effort that would result in a HR around 113.  Its a great program and if you stick with it, it will really help your biking fitness.

Thanks for the swim tips - I'll give them a try next time I'm at the pool.

Gary - I don't subscribe to Triathlete mag but I've considered it.  I'm going to the LRS tomorrow to try out some trail shoes and I know they sell it there so I may pick up a copy.

It's a beautiful day here - spring-like temps.  We may even hit a record high (current record is 74*).  Planning a run for tonight.  It'll be nice to not have to wear 3 layers although we'll be back to normal 30's by Sunday.

So here are a few questions about preferences and rules:

Q1: When entering T1 do you put your number/belt on for the bike ride and turn it backwards or can you just use your body numbers?

Q2: Does your bike have a number that will be placed on it?

Q3: What number belt do you prefer?

Thanks - Dave

Unless the race specifies that the number must be worn during the ride I never put it on.  I hate it flapping around.  I put mine on as I am running out of T2.

Q2: Does your bike have a number that will be placed on it?

Most Races will supply this

Q3: What number belt do you prefer?

For me no preference, I have a few from race goodie bags that I use.  My first one I bought online and was a piece of junk (first race the button popped off).  The give away ones worked well, Fleet Feet has good ones.

Thanks - Dave
